Anyone know if Saltsjöbanan has reopened yet?

Also, are the older trains still in operation or has the refurbishment of the line coincided with new stock?

Is it worth riding on, if in the Stockholm area?

Thanks in advance

It looks as though the line east of Järla will reopen on the 15th of this month and it seems that the old trains or similar ones will still operate it. Personally, I never bothered as it is just a shuttle, but hardened urban transport enthusiasts would be interested.

Compiled from various contradictory sources, so not 100% guaranteed.

EDIT: just done a couple of journey searches for 18 December and they come up with some odd results, mostly RRB the whole way. So check.

I stayed in Saltsjöbaden for a few days one summer several years ago now, before the 2016 work on Slussen started. I don't have any particularly memorable parts of the line apart from the much older feel of the rolling stock compared to everything else I travelled on around Sweden (apart from the narrow gauge heritage line in Mariefred.) I'd probably ride it whilst the old rolling stock is still in service but not if the temporary terminus made it a pain to do time wise.

It definitely felt like a much smaller more rural line than say Copenhagen-Helsingør more like Helsingør-Gilleleje to use an approximate equivalent. Maybe Exmouth-Exeter when it is quieter before peak summer in the UK is a more familiar analogy.

As mentioned the line east of Saltsjö-Järla will open on the 15th. Slussen to Saltsjö-Järla is still closed, there are some major bridge works still taking place. The train are planned to return to Slussen in 2028.

The older trains are still in operation and will be used when the line reopens. It's not surprising that they felt much older, they where built in the 70s and are probably among the oldest trains in service in Sweden. New trains are on their way though, the plan is to sign a contract for the new trains next year and that the first ones will be in service in 2028.

Thanks for the excellent advice/information, as always. My trip will either be in March or May 2025, so it's good to know the line is due to reopen long before then!

Saltsjöbanan reopened as planned so unless something unexpected happens you'll be able to travel on the line.
