Salisbury Platform 1

This always fascinates me every time I see it.

Can anyone share information on when it was last used in service, why it isn't now, and could it be in the future?

I saw there was another discussion on Salisbury station and it made me remember it.

I'm sure someone will correct me on this, but I believe it hasn't been used by regular passenger workings since the Salisbury resignalling in about 1981.

That resignalling made the layout more flexible and the platform was surplus to needs at the time and was not equipped with track circuiting during the resignalling.

I believe it is used to stable trains in though and for ECS movements.

It is also the only access road in and out of the depot - quite surprising that it's lasted this long, and must mean it takes quite a few shunts across the station approaches to get stock in and out of the place.

I'm surprised no plans for it's re-opening have come up yet - surely, with more services using or passing through the station, you could perhaps use it as the London bound platform, while using the inners for Terminating or Southampton / Portsmouth bound services (excluding the Salisbury 6 / Romsey Rounder as it uses it's own platform).

Only disused in the sense of no passenger calls, trains do use the 'road' through the platform.

Although this part of the South Western station doesn’t have a preservation order on it, the GWR one does and so there may be development restrictions. The line is also be used for trains coming out of the depot to reverse before going west and v.v., so possibly requiring train crew to change ends.

Pretty much and that it’s designated a goods line.

Understood, thanks. Four out of six platforms in use at Salisbury then. Not wasted though, if heavily used by staff.

Confusingly though, subsidiary signals are regularly used as starting signals across the SWR network during disruption, Haslemere, Petersfield and Brockenhurst to name but 3.
