Salford - Mauldeth Road/Levenshulme

Pretty soonish, I'm going to need to travel daily from Salford Crescent (SLD) to Fallowfield. Fallowfield has two stations within walking distance; these being Mauldeth Road (MAU) and Levenshulme (LVM). However, these two stations are on different lines (Styal and Hope Valley, respectively).

Services from Manchester Piccadilly to MAU (closer to where I need to go) are half hourly at best, whereas LVM is served a minimum of four times per hour (further away but more frequent service).

As these stations are just over a mile apart, would it be permitted to have a pass from SLD - MAU and if I miss the train to MAU, board a train to LVM and get off there then walk? I'm not sure if this would fall under the "if it's no more than 3 miles longer than the shortest route, it's a valid route" rule or not.

The best advice would be to email Northern and ask.

When I worked between South Elmsall and Moorthorpe they were happy to issue a letter to allow me to travel to either (though in that circumstance the fare was the same).

How does the cost of your two tickets compare with a System One?

Would Stagecoach service 50 be better for you at £9.50 a week? It runs from Fallowfield Retail Park (Birchfields Road/Moseley Road) to Salford Crescent every 10 minutes. Journey time of approx 35 minutes.

I'm not quite sure what fare I'm actually looking at with System One. The cheapest 7 day season I can get is £13.40 (Salford Central [covers me from Salford Crescent] - Mauldeth Road / same fare to Levenshulme).

Off the top of your head, is S1 likely to be cheaper?

I've used the 50 a few times, and yes, that's quite a viable alternative. I'll look into it

To be blunt, no it isn't.

The System One site is mostly interested in getting you on a bus, the only rail ticket, for more than one day, that it mentions is the Countycard (£34.30 for a week), the GM Traincard is cheaper (£28.20 a week) but it probably still seems quite expensive for your needs.

A ticket to Mauldeth Road is not valid to Levenshulme (nor the other way round).

There is unfortunately no agreement, in writing or otherwise that allows travel to Mauldeth Road or Levenshulme in this way.

However, when I AM going to Mauldeth Road, if I miss the 2246 I will generally go and ask the guard on the 2304 if I can go to Levenshulme with a Mauldeth Road ticket, rather than wait for the next (and final) train to Mauldeth Road at 2355. I've never been refused yet - even when the guard was a manager - but that could have something to do with the time of day I'm not sure.
