Salford Crescent improvements

An excellent observation. The Windsor Link project, of which Salford Crescent railway station is an integral part, was not built solely with the student population of Salford University in mind.

Thank you . It's interesting to read people's observations now but think back to how things used to be. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Salford University has grown considerably since Salford Crescent was built as well as having acquired the former college to the west of the station.

Pre Windsor Link there were two stations serving the area - Pendleton on the Bolton line and Pendleton Broad Street on the Wigan/Agecroft lines. They were across the road from each another. Pendleton station closed in the 1960s and stopping services transferred to the other station. It dropped the Broad Street title around the time Salford Crescent opened and survived for a few more years as services declined. The old platform faces can still be seen just after the junction to Wigan.

Interesting, I had wondered about those ghost platforms.

Fortunately I usually have the option of changing trains at Victoria on my cross Pennine journeys. It looks as though Victoria will still be by far the better option even after the works at Salford Crescent.
