Salford Central

Hi

Does anyone know if there are any specific plans to expand Salford Central?
I know there was a recommendation (Rail Utilisation Strategy: http://www.networkrail.co.uk/browse...tion strategies/north west/north west rus.pdf )to have the liverpool services stop at the station from Vic, but this was a couple of years ago before everyone ran out of money....

I've just had a look at the station on Bing maps (on bird's eye view) and the bridge to the west (the one that doesn't carry track) looks to have been re-furbed as well as the bridges that carry running track. does this indicate that the discused platforms will becoming back to life?

Salford Urban Regeneration Company are sponsoring Network Rail to do a feasability study on reinstating two Liverpool platforms. If it comes out well they may be able to wrangle it into the Northern Hub project.

It isn't RE-instating liverpool platforms, it's BUILDING liverpool platforms, the line to the Chat Moss route used to go into Exchange and had NO platforms at Salford, the two spare ones are from when Vic - Windsor Bridge was 4 track, and the Chat Moss Route was 4 track on it's own, with no platforms.

TBH, theres better things to spend money on than this, if somone at Salford Central wants to get to Liverpool they can either change at Victoria, or walk to Deansgate or Manchester OR, the're not that far away and the money would be better spent finding a way to push more trains through Victoria, not to sound like I'm repeating myself or anything, but 2 more platforms at Ashburys and opening the route from there to Victoria back up again, or re-instating the Ardwick curve from piccadilly with some more platforms on the E lines at picc in the car park would be a better use of money to stop trains having such long dwell times in Victoria, it would also open vic to easyer diversions from the East Manchester Lines if there is a problem with piccadilly, or a regular service...

Well on this basis then we should close Salford Central because there are other stations near by. But as the lines already there, and YES I know that the ex LNWR lines had no platforms, simply because Exchange was closer than Victoria. However, why build new platforms, there are two perfectly good, but sadly unused platforms at Salford Central.

Divert the Liverpool lines through these two platforms at Salford Central and it will be much cheaper than building new ones, plus as they are already there, it is possible that all the preperation work could be a lot easier. The lines can be reinstated quite easily and no lines need to be closed until the time to connect the new lines through the platforms to the current running lines either side of Salford Central.

New platforms at Salford Central is still listed in the 2nd generation Northern RUS, currently out on consultation. The entry there cross refers back to section 5.3.10 in the NW RUS, and just says 'previous recommendation holds'. The previous recommendation being 'include in the strategy'. So that suggests it hasn't been abandoned - it's possible it is just lost in all the noise about the Northern Hub.


The difficulty, it seems, is reading the NW RUS, the Northern Hub report, and now this '2nd generation' Northern RUS all together. They don't make things easy...
