Rural stations (stargazing)

Me and my girlfriend love looking at stars and it was easy when we both lived on outskirts of sheffield

now we both live in city centres at university (leeds me newcastle her)

She is coming down in a few weeks time and i am looking to catch the train out to a rural station that has alot less light pollution. But is in a safe area for evening.

this is from leeds and will be a saturday night

i had three thoughts. harrogate line, between garforth and york or beyond skipton? any suggestions for stations on these lines or others?

I would recommend Ribblehead. Was waiting there at night a few weeks ago and it was absolutely pitch black with no light pollution at all. It was also impressively quiet so that it was possible to hear the train rumbling from far away in the distance.

The pub nearby on the main road is also fairly decent to thaw out in.

Iridium flares brighter than magnitude -5 are fun to watch.

ribblehead i do consider a very good option cost may come as an issue though:/ but ill see

how close it the pub and does it serve food?

actually come to think of it im goign walking there on saturday may aswell scout it myself thanks for help !

You also might want to consider the last train on a Saturday back to Leeds is at 2100 (change at Skipton).

Yes it does, although I didn't try it myself it looked nice enough.

I think if I were on my own with an attractive lady on Ribblehead station in the dark, then looking at stars would just about be the last thing on my mind.

Ribblehead is indeed a great place for star gazing. While up there touring in my new landy, myself and two friends stopped at the station one night last february....although it can get very breezy, so woolies at the ready.

The station Inn is a lovely country pub, they do great food (and rooms should you decide to stay over, it cost me £60 for a double room with breakfast) But even just for a drink and meal its good value, Its only a short walk from the rail station.

It's a rural route. Dunno why it stops short at Skipton though. It might stable there to go back out to Ribblehead early doors to start the morning service from there.

It connects with a handy electrick back to Leeds.

Aye I know. What happens to that unit though? Does it stay in Skipton and run empty to Ribblehead (returning to Leeds) the morning after?

It does in fact form the 2148 service to Leeds so no actual changing trains needed. I only know this from having got the 2148 before and it is normally a 158 and I can't see where else that would have come from.

Why is it not advertised as a through train? Seems odd.

Brundall Gardens in Norfolk is great for that (even if not terribly practical). At the moment the station lights don't work so they've got these kind of fairy lights draped from one end to the other and across the footbridge. Every time I pass it I get the urge to get out and admire it but then it's another hour for the next train so not hugely practical.
