Runcorn East to Runcorn (Mainline)

Does anyone know why there are absolutely no valid routes for this journey?

NRES gives up to a 2hour journey time (with split tickets), - I know the stations are in the same town, but they are about 20mins apart by road...

Why can you not buy a ticket from one to the other?

Nothing returns on Avantix Traveller...

I'm sure that I could be on to a little loophole for cheap tickets somewhere here, as the route NRES gives you is via Warrington & Crewe... just needs a bit more looking into...

Also, really strange, on RJIS and Avantix, no fares come up for Helsby-Delamere, despite this being a reasonable journey, and requires a change at Chester, and is routed as such, extremely bizarre considering the station before, and after, return fares...

TOCs obviously don't expect you to travel to different parts of the same town by train unless there is a direct rail link between the two stations and effectively are saying to use other forms of public transport...

A slightly weirder example of no fares appearing for a journey between two stations is Patchway to Yate (although this has been covered in another thread).

Within Manchester PTE all fares should be issued to Manchester CTLZ (MCZ). This allows cross-city trams too. Which is why Heald Green or most/all other stations do not have fares to Manchester Stns.

The NFM never listed fares from Runcorn East, and so it comes under Warrington Stns (for those who are curious, there is a reversable fare from Warrington Stns to Runcorn East), therefore the fare is Warrington Stns to Runcorn, which is 'Route Liverpool'.

This journey may not seem as stupid as first thought. It can actually be done by just changing once (or at least it used to be)

You can leave Runcorn East and go one stop south to Frodsham. Once at Frodsham you would of had to timed your arrival to meet the once a week on Summer Saturdays only train that takes the Halton Curve (left Chester at 0825 in 2008 and arrived into Runcorn 0851). This you would then take one stop north from Frodsham to Runcorn. I'm pretty sure this would be valid on a Frodsham to Runcorn Stations return and thus your cheapest way of doing this journey.

Most tickets are to 0435 LIVERPOOL STNS, correct, but my point basically was, Liverpool Central, Moorfields, Liverpool James Street all have separate fares, yet Lime Street LL, a completely separate station issues all fares as if the mainline station had issued them- something which I assume affects the passenger counts...

The fare is the same as Chester to Delamere, but even Northern's Fastis machine won't issue it!

It's also the same at Glasgow low level stations - tickets don't show a distinction for those issued by the low level ticket offices or for travel only on low level services (e.g. Queen Street to Charing Cross).

I'm not sure which passenger counts would be affected - accounting data will be broken down to machine and clerk level, so they know exactly how much revenue comes from each ticket window. As far as a passenger's journey goes, the destination will make it clear in most cases whether an upstairs or downstairs train was used. Census surveys will probably also take place.

A similar situation exists between Hertford North and Hertford East. A 20 minute walk apart but to get from one to the other via train only would involve going via London.

Amusingly, entering the journey into National Rail Enquiries brings up a couple of options...

1. Walk: 30 minutes, 0 changes (it didn't offer to sell me a ticket for this journey)

2. Walk to Hertford East, train to Ware, train to Hertford East, journey duration 54 minutes, 2 changes! And it would sell me the single tickets from Hertford East to Ware, and then back again!!

All tickets to GLASGOW CEN/QST are valid to the likes of Argyle Street, Charing Cross and so on. Particularly useful for me, as I used to get off at Queen Street and back on at Charing Cross (North Clyde).

The only ticket in the area that you can't buy (to my knowledge) is Glasgow Central-Glasgow Queen Street or return, mostly because all tickets show up as GLASGOW CEN/QST and they are only 10 minutes apart on foot and served by the "wee free bus" (the 398.)

No, why would you want those stations specifically? What's wrong with Farnborough Stations to London Terminals? What discount would you expect to be limited to Main to Waterloo?

Just looking on NXEC for a similar situation in my local area...

Coatbridge Central to Coatbridge Sunnyside takes 5 minutes by foot. By rail, it's 1 hour 45 minutes via Cumbernauld and Queen Street, and 1 hour 43 minutes via Whifflet Glasgow Central and a walk to Queen Street. There is a fare available (!) at £3.05 single.

Maybe I'll try that some day

Ah sorry I'm not too much of an expert up in the Chester area but I just assumed that the once a day train would be an all station stopper for some reason!! That option if it doesn't stop wouldn't be available then as you are doubling back then.
