Rules Podcasts/Video

Hi All,

Trainee driver at the moment, I find that standard rereading info etc doesn't really work for me, was wondering if anyone knew of any rules podcasts or videos I could listen too. I don't mind if they aren't really up to date as much as its more for reminding myself, I know most ToCs have amendments etc but I'm really just after a base RSSB version if possible.

I can’t help on videos sorry, but please tell your trainer/instructor that you’re struggling. Don’t sit back and hope for the best. I remember quite well that our course instructor told us about how different people learn so they SHOULD be very understanding and help you. Also, join the union in the slim chance they’re not understanding but I can’t see this being the case.

I would go and speak to your depot driver managers. They'll let you practice on compass (rules questions) if you want to brush up on your knowledge or get some confidence.

Similar to the driving theory test. Multiple choice answers to rules/route/traction questions.

I would definitely tell to you driver trainer that your struggling, they will find a way that works for you. You have to learn the rule book and you get tested on it, it's essential you understand it though for the train driver role.

Don't just carry on and hope for the best, you will get found out once it comes to your assignments.

One thing covid has brought to attention of many traincrew, is that elements of the train driver training have to be practical.
There was a push to having traction training via zoom/teams, with little or zero hands on traction training.

Then once the DIs got the trainee they literally had to redo the traction training through extra practical handling. I'm glad to see the classroom environment is being shown as an essential part of the trainee drivers training post covid.

For me personally hands on training is the method that works for me, the online elements don't benefit me. Online working has its place in the modern world but it's an extra tool to use but hands on is essential I think.
