A thought has just occurred to me!

Can anyone tell me why the new LED Signal CL5830 erected at Par as part of the Cornish Main Line Resignalling has a Rule 55/K2 exemption diamond plate on it?

Surely at these modern workstation–controlled installations, the signaller will be aware from his workstation screen display that a train is being detained at it?

When the Semaphore on the Down Morecambe line at Bare Lane Down platform was replaced, a 4–aspect colour–light with the green aspect disabled was erected to replace it, and this had a diamond plate on it, even though trains would be virtually under the Bare Lane signalman's nose!

(This signal was abolished when the 1994 Railtrack rationalisation took place to convert the branch to two one–train–only single lines!)

Is the Diamond Plate now used to indicate a different Rule to that in use in the traditional A.B. working days?

A diamond sign on a stop signal indicates two things:
a) a telephone is not provided
b) the presence of the train is indicated in the signal box and the train is protected.

Everyone seems to remember the second point but not the first.

Signal CL5830 doesn't have a signal post telephone and train detection is provided, hence it gets a diamond sign.

Ah!

. . .You're quite correct – I forgot about the diamond indicating no SPT is provided!

. . .I am aware that in very busy multiple track areas diamond plates with an "X" on them are used, indicating that safe clearances to use SPTs are not available and that drivers must not leave their cabs to attempt to use one except in an emergency situation, e.g. derailment, train fire or major accident!

I think the wording back in the day was along the lines of “the presence of a train is indicated to the signalman by other means”. It was defined as indicating exemption from the provisions of Rule 55 (subsequently Sect C 4.6).
