The Welsh RFU will now be worriedly watching how matters will ensue over the coming period over the matter of the position taken by the French and English clubs over what will happen after the current Heineken Cup is completed. Financial matters seems to be a very big worry at present for the future of how the game in Wales will be left.

The structure of the professional game in Wales is pretty complicated, and no one seems very happy with it. the WRU is now profitable, but this is mostly based n revenue from international games in Cardiff/ no doubt this has been helped by the success of the team in recent years.

Regionally, crowds are low and the teams have not been successful in Europe. There are many opinions on the best way forward, but it is hard to find one that the majority, never mind all of the stakeholders, find acceptable.

I am certian of one thing, a 'European' competition with solely French and English clubs will not be as good or as interesting as what we have currently. Similarly, an 'alternative' cup competition featuring the other countries will be less competitive and less interesting.

Financially, I suspect the sport in every country will be worse off over the emdium and long term.

As an update to recent matters, after a series of meetings in Dublin, the English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish and Italian rugby union governing bodies appear to have reached an agreement that changes will be made to the structure of European club rugby.

Noticeably, representatives from the French and English clubs were not in attendance at these meetings,

Most unfortunate that the 15th minute injury that saw the hooker, Rory Best, taking no further part in this match, has turned out to be a broken arm.

Ulster will really miss his presence in their team in the coming weeks.

Ireland played superbly in the first half. It was a great pity for them that they were unable to sustain the intensity for the whole match.

They also succumbed to what seems to be a problem for Wales at times too - kicking the ball away too much and too aimlessly.

Just to make sure that their position is fully understood, the top-flight English clubs have repeated their assertion that they will not take part in the Heineken Cup next season. I wonder if their equivalent level clubs in France will reiterate their own position now.

I was wondering what the position may have been, until the Premiership Rugby disciplinary panel fined Northampton Saints £60,000 for allowing George North to play for Wales against Australia on 30th November, which the panel stated was outside the IRB autumn International match window and they stated that particular matter had previously been agreed by the English Premiership rugby organisation and the clubs.

Having just been directed to this thread which makes interesting reading.

Although I am not a huge sports fan, I don't like football and not keen on cricket, although I always want England and the other home nations to do well, although results are disappointing with the Ashes at the moment in cricket. I do have 1 friend who is a CFC supporter and two others who are supporters of Spurs. So I can't get away from it.

Anyway I much prefer Rugby and Rugby Union in particular. I always follow the six nations in the forthcoming months and also have soft sport for Harlequins and Wasps.

I don't play, at all, but we had to do at school in the 1960s & 70s, the best matches being between the boys and the schoolmasters, it was our way of getting back at them, a few rough tackles etc without getting into too much trouble afterwards, although they could play a bit roughly too. I do recall having the geography master land on me, he seemed to have come from out of nowhere really fast. One up to Sir I think then.
