Rugby station

There is civil engineering work to the north of Rugby station between the station and DBSchenker's yard. It is adjacent to the southbound tracks around the back of Rugby college. They are currently using piledrivers to hammer in concrete foundation posts.

Does anyone know what this is and whether or not it is anything to do with the railway or the college or something else altogether?

Saw them doing this work the other day while I was running round on the Goods - I suspect it may be the foundations and risers for a new multi storey car park, similar to those now in place at Leighton Buzzard and Tring.

I assumed that the new "signal box" would be on the site of the old box which is currently being dismantled. I was also hoping that it might be foundations for a new loco shed although I knew that was being wildly optimisitc!!!!

The NR CP5 submission actually uses the terms Rail Operating Centre and Route Operating Centre:

from the LNW plan:
Route Operating Centre (ROC)
The route has developed a plan to migrate all LNW Route (and some Great Western Route) signalling locations into 3 ROCs (West Midlands, Manchester, Rugby).

I was wrong about the scope of Rugby ROC, it's just the WCML south of Crewe/Macc (to include Stafford, Norton Bridge and the current Stoke area).

And the West Mids as well, the WMSCC is not going to be one.

The term "Route Operating Centre" only makes sense if the intended signalling control areas of the ROCs correspond with entire Route areas, i.e. all of the LNW Route to be controlled from one ROC. From the statement above, it's clear that this isn't what's envisaged.

Still dont believe Saltley will become one and not heard to the contary. Rugby is going to have empty space if it does though. I would have also thought the LNW route would have to justify 3 ROCs when other routes will run on less.

The goal is for only five of these ROCs for the whole network is that not the case

Still dont think they will get rid of every signal box though, there will be a few they won't get rid of like the one that operates the swing bridge at Reedham in Norkfolk

No, it's still around about 12 or 13 (For the whole of GB). The debate seems to be about a couple of specific areas, one being the exact number they need for the WCML which seems to have two or three depending on which info you read.

Then there's Kent, with both Gillingham and Ashford being mentioned as having ROCs.

The ROC building itself could be quite massive, depending on what other functions they've decided to include in there - it might be more than just signalling.

The NR press release about Basingstoke touched on this:

The Basingstoke centre will provide over 13,000 square metres of building and around 5,000 square metres of training space for Alliance staff. Training facilities will include indoor and outdoor track layouts, a train simulator and educational space to provide learning environments for engineers, signallers, maintenance staff and drivers.

By combining operational services with training and office space, the centre will deliver efficiencies in construction, maintenance and operation and will provide a central location within the route for staff.

That doesn't necessarily mean they'll definitely do the same everywhere, but I think the plans for Three Bridges are also on the grand scale so it might be a national thing...

Rugby ROC update , low-res pic from my phone.
2 " sections" added to length since last week.Now sure that this the final length of the building after comparing it with a graphic representation of it that I found on the internet. Also ,some stairs now in place at both ends of building.

I took this photo in 2002 , the very temporary looking grey building in the background still seems to be in use today ,. 11 years on ( Most of the windows were lit up internally today). Location is to east of new R.O.C. under construction and west of Rugby SCC , but does anybody know what it's used for?

They are the old West Coast Route Mod offices IIRC. They are still used for bits and bobs today.

Thanks for that. I suspected they were connected to WCML upgrade but 2002 seemed too early for that.

In a brief moment of excitement i thought that was a very recent picture with the 08 at Rugby and thought I must pop down to capture it myself.

Then I read the words 2002!

Incidentally, anyone know if the 92s are still doing workings to Rugby? Only, there often used to be a Eurotunnel 92 dumped in the south end of the station stabling point (or platform 3) but I haven't seen one in there for several weeks now.

The 92 is still parked there on a regular basis, usually see it on a Wednesday and Friday was also there yesterday.

Possibly but I didn't think so.

I assumed that it was on containers that went to the DBS yard north West of the station. The number of containers there also seems to have recently depleted.

However, I'm not sure why a eurotunnel 92 would be doing a working to a DBS yard????!!?!

So maybe you're right about it being a DIRFT working.

I highly doubt it.

A 92 has been stabled in the south end for well over a year and at least half a dozen different members of the Eurotunnel fleet over that time. They usually stay for a few days during midweek then clear off again as if it's a regular weekly working.
