The first half team tactics by England were shown to be the totally wrong match play and seemed to solely about absorbing Australian pressure then banking on breakaway attacks. The England clearance kicking was so bad as to be the easiest that the Australian defence could have hoped for. The second England half tactics were totally different and the game was taken to Australia.

Australia scored two of their tries in the 18-4 win over England from positions that they were defending near to their own line, one an interception and a solo run the length of the field and the other from the loss of possession in a good attacking position emanating from a very poor long pass by England in a position where a successful pass could have resulted in an England try.

Wales were totally overwhelmed by both power and pace in their opening match against Papua New Guinea and the half-time score of 26-0 was a sad reflection on how Wales just could not come to terms with what their opponents were offering. By the time the match had ended, Papua New Guinea had ran in no less than ten tries and the only Welsh try came at the very end of the match, with Papua New Guinea winning 50-6.

As happened to Wales against South Sea opposition, Scotland were very much the lesser team in the first half and when that half was ended, the match was virtually over with Tonga leading 38-0. Thankfully, Scotland managed to keep the total "tryfest" down in the second half, but the sad fact is that Tonga still ran out 50-4 winners.

Australian winger Valentine Holmes is certainly making his mark in the tournament, scoring no less than six tries in the match to add to the five he scored against Samoa in the quarter final.

England need to realise they need to concentrate until the match is over, as with seven minutes to go and winning with a comfortable 20-0 margin, they let Tonga score three tries in those last seven minutes.

I wonder if it was hoped that both the first and final matches in this World Cup featured Australia v England matches. After that Australian 18-4 win in the first match, I could not see anyone but Australia winning the cup. England made mistakes in match after match, which must have heartened the Australian squad.

England have chucked away several good field positions with silly errors. Australia will extend in the second half

Australia won ( as expected) but while England didn't really look like winning they made the Kangaroos work very hard for their 6-0 win.

The hard fact of the matter is that in the two matches that England played in this tournament against Australia, they only scored an aggregate total of four points.

Good to see the return of the league fixtures to Rugby League once again.

An interesting match in the Betfred Championship today is that of Leigh Centurions who were relegated from the Super League at home to Toronto Wolfpack who were promoted to this second-tier league after a most dominant league campaign last season.

An interesting match in the Betfred Championship today is that of Leigh Centurions who were relegated from the Super League at home to Toronto Wolfpack who were promoted to this second-tier league after a most dominant league campaign last season.

Well, it certainly turned out to be quite some game, as although Leigh had a 12-10 lead at half time, Toronto really came into their own in the second half, scoring 24 unanswered points and finishing winners by 34-12.

Salford Red Devils 36...Hull Kingston Rovers 12

Salford now seem becoming more acclimatised to life under their new ownership and were 18-6 up at half time and did not relax in the second period, eventually outscoring Hull KR by six tries to two.

Amazingly, after only three matches played this season, only St Helens now have a 100% record.

This "bottom 4" match was one that Salford showed enough spirit to lead 12-4 at the break then did not lose spirit as in some second half performances of late that sees them in such a lowly league position. They outscored Catalans by five tries to three. I wonder what hopes the new owners have for escaping the play-offs at the end of the season.

In this top v bottom fixture, Swinton did well to keep the score down to 22-8 at half-time, but Toronto looking a far better side against this quality of opposition scored 40 more points in the second half. Toronto won the try count by 12 to 2.

I see Oldham were in action today against bottom of table West Wales Raiders, the results wasn't too heavy for West Wales unlike last couple of games for them.

No respite for West Wales Raiders who were 38-0 down at half time, with Hunslet appearing to score at will over the 80 minutes.

West Wales Raiders have now lost all their nine league matches, scoring a total of 44 points, but conceding no less than 786 points.

In this midweek bottom-of-the-table clash, Widnes were leading 12- 8 at half-time, but then Salford scored 18 unanswered second-half points. This match ended a run of six Super League defeats by Salford, who won the match try count by 5 to 2.

Salford are still coming to terms with their new ownership structure and both teams on current form looked doomed to appear in the end of season qualifying competition.
