I am deliberating complaining to Cardiff Central staff about their dispatch team, because frankly, the disposition of almost the entire team, save one cheerful lady usually on Pl. 1/2 (two or three men I'm thinking of in particular), is nothing short of shocking.

Today, I watched an elderly dispatcher on Pl. 1/2 (looked a little bit like Mark Drakeford with a redder face) waft his dispatch pad in customer's faces to get them to go away (!!!!) when they were asking him about a cancelled Holyhead train.

To me, when I enquired as to whether the Manchester train had been cancelled, he told me "Well I don't know, do I, look it up." He screamed at an elderly woman, "MOVE, I CAN'T SEE THE SIGNAL! MOVE!! MOVE!!" and has bellowed at a number of people nowhere near the yellow line in a truly outrageous manner.

Yesterday, another dispatcher on Pl. 3/4, middle aged, scruffy brown beard, yelled at a customer "GET A MOVE ON!" when they attempted to board a train with heavy luggage, and then shouted at them, saying that the train was too busy and that it wouldn't fit on board. It did easily. He then made an announcement telling parents to "keep their children and dogs under control" after a dog started barking at two children passing by, who were laughing loudly as children do.

Not long ago, I myself asked a dispatcher if I had the right train (it turns out I did), and as he began to answer, a woman with pink hair snapped "No you can move along actually, now, we've got faults to discuss." OK, she actually turned out to be a driver of the adjacent 175, not a dispatch, but the dispatcher then turned his back to me and did not answer my question. When I asked another dispatcher where I could complain about this, he shrugged at me.

I've never known such poor conduct from a dispatch team. Nowhere else is it like this. I use Cardiff Central every day and this has really started to infuriate me. After hearing them bellow at people for the umpteenth time today, I very nearly bellowed at them. Has anyone else had similar encounters with rude dispatch staff at Cardiff Central?

Yep I've had a particularly bad incident there where I was just asking for information about delays as the departure boards and the live apps were showing contradictory information and a particular member of staff took exception to me asking, either lied or was under a mistaken belief that I was a known troublemaker at the station and to go away before I was thrown off the station. I went to find another member of staff to complain and was told it would be dealt with only for two coppers to come upto me 5 minutes later threatening me with arrest unless I left. Needless to say I complained after the fact but never heard anything back.

Absolutely disgusting. Many thanks for sharing your experience. A big problem is some twisted form of “loyalty,” in that staff will not try and help you if they know you’re going to put in a complaint about their colleague. It’s profoundly unhelpful. I have put in a very strongly worded complaint about said driver with the pink hair, and will let you know their response, but I am getting mightily pissed off with the dispatch team.

Manners don’t cost a penny, and safety comes first YES - but other dispatch teams manage not to be blatantly rude.

I too have experienced rudeness at Cardiff Central. There are still plenty of railway staff out there who treat passengers as an inconvenience.

To be fair everything about Cardiff Central is a problem.

The layout is not conducive to terminating trains and yet they keep adding more to the timetable by splitting up journeys like the Manchester to South Wales. There are then set swaps and partial cancellations which mean more terminate than need to.

There are then strange decisions about which platform to use for which train which must make it really hard to explain to passengers why their train is stuck behind another one when the other part of the same island has no train on it.

There is a habit for trains to be left around out of service waiting to go to Canton, or the sidings, meaning people think that should be their train. These trains often stay in platforms long after the one that would be in service was due to leave. This can even happen at 23:00 when there are hardly any other movements to wait for. The 23:15 Carmarthen always has something wrong with it (waiting for an inward, or just not able to set off) whenever I use it.

All of this, plus the constant waiting for a platform on the approaches, mean Cardiff handles some very frustrated people.

I do not make excuses for the dispatchers, but it must be hard dealing with constant issues of the type many of us experience going through Cardiff.

EDIT: I would like to say the gateline staff are good, they always let me out when disruption means I have much longer in Cardiff than planned.

Agreed on the gateline staff who also agreed with me when I moaned to them about the dispatchers today. The station is disfunctional. The balance of through and terminating services doesn’t work - especially as there’s a mixture of terminating services that arrive and board from the same platforms and those that arrive on 3/4 and run round to 1/2. It causes all sorts of blockages and congestion issues.

I made a speculative thread here for that as it is off topic and purely speculative: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/cardiff-central-possibilities.251941/

However, I think that if the operation of the station were smoother it would be easier for the dispatchers to feel happy in their work.

Can’t say I had any bad experience per se, however when we were there last month the whole place seemed rather chaotic. The valleys service was disrupted yet the level of information provided was pretty much non-existent.

I wouldn’t go quite as far as to say the station is dysfunctional, but it’s certainly rather chaotic. I guess it will be worse if the valleys metro service ever reaches its planned frequency!

Really none of the rail service in south Wales seems to work particularly well at the moment. This may well explain (but not excuse) why staff might be off-ish.

This would seem to be a matter to discuss with TfW directly, I'm not entirely sure that there is anything to be gained from this thread continuing as no-one was there who would be able to provide any further information.
