On this, I have to admit to being guilty of the crime the other week. Not in the UK but abroad. I boarded a very very full metro replacement bus in the pooring rain. I managed to squash myself in by the door with my back to the wall, but had no way of actually getting the thing off. I figured keeping it on meant I could get on and off the bus at the stops to let people get off and on.
However having done just that at the first stop, a swathe of people jumped on the bus behind me forcing me into the middle of the bus. At this point it really did not help that I could not speak the language. Instead of allowing me to take the rucksack off they proceeded to bounce it back and forward spinning me around in the process each time. A lady behind me was getting squashed and I could do very little to stop it. Eventually they signaled to me to take it down and after persuading them to stand back a little I was able to. I was obviously incredibly embarrassed and as apologetic as I could be as the lady seemed hurt. But I genuinely don't believe there was anything I could realistically have done before that point.
One thing I will say is once back in this country, I boarded a 319 from Manchester Airport. Given this is a train serving the airport, there is absolutely nowhere to put any kind of large luggage what so ever. Thankfully the train on a Sunday morning was incredibly quite and I had a whole bay of 6 to myself, so the bag just got dumped on the floor. I do hope that some luggage space will be included on all trains serving the Airport as part of Northern's overhaul program.
