Rubbish on the trackside

Don't know if anybody of you picked this up on the news a couple of weeks back, but a chap is taking legal action against Network Rail to try and make them tidy the tracksides up a little bit. And I must admit, he does have a point.

Coming into Rochdale station from the Manchester end is an absolute eyesore - the amount of cr@p is a disgrace. And I have lost count on the number of footballs that litter the track approaching Salford Crescent from Bolton. Perhaps we could make Prisoners earn a bit of their keep???

There are some pretty awful locations for rubbish, particularly where people seem to fly-tip over fences that back onto the line. NR do send teams out 'litter picking' through the platform roads at stations, but a thorough national clean-up would be good!

There is lots of rubbish on the line near where I live, especially around a bridge lots of kids use to get to school, including some shoes, which might make the odd driver double take as they pull in to the station.

As quickly as Nitwit Rail clean the linesides the scrotes responsible for the mess in the first place will just put more down.

There is one spot on my routes that is particularly bad for householders fly-tipping stuff over their back fences and onto the lineside. Nitwit Rail came along and cut the vegetation back and exposed the extent of the problem, so they came back a while later to clear up. A couple of weeks after that and it was back in a terrible state again.

It's not Nitwit Rail that need action taking against them but the people who persistently use the railway as a convenient dumping ground for all their waste.

Agreed.
The main problem is its hard to prove who dumps what.
Only if they are caught red handed, or there is proof in the litter of whom or where it came from. Is it likely to come to a fine or court hearing.

There are certain places in the West Mids area where I come to a stand at red signals and see rubbish that's obviously been chucked over the fence by whoever lives in that particular house. It must be them as there's no other access to these places that back directly onto the line, sometimes I'm tempted to chuck it back over but I'd probably be reported by the self same untidy sc*m who put it there in the first place.

Network Rail leave enough junk beside the track themselves - in particular the growing amount of rail. Most photos of the main rail system these days will include a bit of spare rail left somewhere. OK, the long sections don't present any danger, but a shorter bit could be manhandled or levered by a group of vandals into a position where it could be used to deliberately de-rail a train.
