Rubbish left on trains

Got on my 156 today and the amount of crap left on the tables and seats was a disgrace. So much so, that when the guard came around I could tell he wasn't best pleased (lovely asian gentleman who works the Wigan lines - he's a credit to Northern) because he was putting all the rubbish in the bins. I suggested to him that one solution would be to authorise guards to issue Fixed penalties if they catch people leaving rubbish or other antisocial behaviour. Went down quite well with him did that. If CSO's can issue fixed penalties then I don't see why train guards can't.

I sympathise. The amount of rubbish generated by one group of three or four passengers at a table seat can be incredible sometimes! It's all the more irritating when they leave it strewn all over the place when there is a bin just a few feet away. Sadly thought it seems pretty much normal for a majority of passengers. Perhaps with all the mid-journey onboard cleaners and so on, people are just conditioned to presuming that somebody will come along in the minute and clear it up for them?! The other widespread bugbear is feet on seats, which also seems to be considered perfectly normal acceptable practise with a great many people. Hmmpph.

Having said that though, almost without fail the TPE service I get on each Sunday from Preston has bags of rubbish left on it by the trolly (person? Don't know their title), anyhoo, it's just left there in the section between the cab and first class.
It really annoys me too because it is left in a space for wheelchairs.

I have always found it ironic when people complain about rubbish on trains and then don't put their rubbish in the bin eithier.

The biggest problem I tend to find with my trains especially around commuter time is the mountain of metros you find at the end of a journey. I have seen bins at some stations to allow people to recycle them but they seem to be few and far between. There really should be more of them. Might encourage some people to take them with them.

and chances are it stays there til edinburgh and the scotrail staff I know grumble at taking it off. think the issues are quite simple..papengers are messy sods and need educating. Also though more could be done by the toc particularly on local runs to cleam sets at stations. I know some turnrounds are tight but in some cases the unit is sitting for half an hour or more and there is plenty time for cleaning.

I have to admit that in Preston the trolly does just get off but surely the bag could be attached to the trolly as it's taken off. Though this is the 20:10 service to Manchester Airport, I don't have the 185 diagrams and so I don't know if this then goes to Scotland, maybe someone else does, had a quick look and couldn't find them.

Virgin seem to have this sussed. There's on-board staff who walk the train collecting rubbish off the tables and checking the toilets. The result is that when the train arrives, it is clean and as soon as the boarding passengers are on, it can go.

I've seen a late-arriving Pendelino at Manchester Piccadilly turned around in 5 minutes, to make an on-time departure. If it had had to be cleaned between journeys, that wouldn't have been possible.

Ah yes, bl**dy Metros!! Here we are, in a day and age when we all are told to recycle and use the world's resources carefully, and yet it's fine for the big newspaper corp to print those blighters every day purely to generate advertising revenue!! How many thousands of tons of pointless watse does that create every year I wonder?! Who can't afford to go and spend a few pennies on a proper paper?! Time they were banned if you ask me, Grrr....!! :-x

What should be done is get all the rubbish pop round the the passengers house and dump it on their carpet. Impossible I know but it would make me feel better and see how they like living in their crap

On the 11:25 from Coventry to Leamington yesterday I noticed half the contents of a Starbucks coffee shop on two seats. Disgusting.

I don't mind the odd paper here and there but sometimes it goes too far.

I agree and I think Virgin have shown this works well, now other TOC's could learn off that, wonder if it'll happen, certainly not on Northern I wouldn't think.

Maybe if there was some station on each route where cleaners were stationed if could work.

True, but you can compress things like paper cups. And they are emptied frequently

I have worked Green Express Charters quite a few times.They had a team of stewards going through the train all the time.
Black bin Bags were the choice of containing the rubbish.
A 12 coach train hold about 720 people and they all make rubbish.
Normally the train was split in half, and a steward went one way and another went the other way.
A bag could be filled in one coach, ally cans and glass bottles were put to one side for recycling off the train.
If the stewards did not patrol the train up and down, the rubbish would pile up on the floor or on the tables, causing a bad environment for the customers.
Normally when the train made the longest stop the coaches would be tanked and the rubbbish removed into big rubbish containers on the platform.
York is a good example of atanking and bagging location.
I have helped with this job, and it was a good way to meet the passengers and have a laugh and joke with them on the long journeys.
I always wore my hooking on gloves when doing this job.

ahhhh the Metro, certain paper are used to clean s***e and others just contain more s***e, The company that owns the Metro should have to hire cleaners, I can start my day with a relatively clean train (heck mine are usually 25 years old) then do a quick 1 hour trip and it will look like someones set off explosives wrapped in a 50-60 metros, it wouldn't be so bad if it was a good read, its that bad I would almost read the Mail (almost) lol

East Coast already do this quite successfully as do First Capital Connect on certain Hertford Loop services as well.

Again First Capital Connect already do this with cleaners based at Kings Cross, Peterborough, Cambridge and I believe also Kings Lynn as well - I can't comment on the Thameslink route as I don't know where their own turnround cleaners are based.

What would be nice for the passengers of the Inner Suburban services would be for staff even if it's just one to be based each at Welwyn GC and Hertford North for turnround cleaning duties which would result in slighter cleaner trains.

I find announcements to "take your litter with you" infuriating- especially with the paucity of bins at railway stations. Bins on trains in my experince are frequnetly tiny and overflowing, even on some of the operators praised here.

South West Trains seem to be doing a good job at keeping carriages clean, worst thing I've seen in about 10 years of travelling on the railway was some vomit on the floor and seating area, funnily enough they were the only unoccupied seats and people kept coming into the coach seeing them but them walking off in disgust lol

Down here in commuter-land, we get it double. Metros left all over the gaff in the mornings, and Evening Standards ( recently re-launched as a freesheet) in the afternoons & at night. And the little bins on our trains are just too small to take it all...

Actually, there are times when I've forgotten to pick up the metro in the morning and I end up desperately looking for one on the way back. There isn't usually one there by 7:30 pm.

I do buy a slightly weightier paper each day but the metro does have some amusing nonsense if it's been a slow news day .

Aren't there Metro dispensers on trains? On local buses here, they have a very simple metal holder by the doors, where they are dispensed from, and where they are tidied back to when the driver tidies up.

Not that I've seen, but the metal dispensers are prevalent everywhere else on stations (though I would guess you already knew that ). I would be a good idea perhaps if they were on trains, would probably encourage people to put them back after their done. Unlikely though.
