I've just received a £45 RTV from Virgin for a 44 minute delay into Euston recently. Very nice of them considering the tickets only cost me £43.

However what isn't made plain is their usage. I know that before Christmas I will be taking a trip to Cardiff (for a signallers get-together) that won't cost me £45. As I will have to pay on the train do I get another "credit note" back, or do I lose the balance? There is no mention on the voucher, nor the accompanying letter.

You would lose the balance, no change is given. Perhaps you could use the remainder as part-payment for another upcoming trip?

One Voucher can be used to pay (or part-pay) for multiple tickets, so the OP is advised to either buy tickets for future journeys (perhaps including Plusbus) or maybe come to an arrangement with one of his fellow signallers to pay for their ticket to Cardiff.

Thanks all.
Shame they don't send them in multiples of £10; I'm sure I got them like that a few years ago from ATW.

They used to - or even in multiples of £5 - I got some like this a while back. The last few times I've received them it's been the total amount divided by three (seeing as there are three coupons per sheet).

You could ask them and see if they will change them for smaller denominations
