Which is why modern high performance third rails are mostly made of aluminium?
I know that the DLR uses under-running 3rd rail, with top & side protection, the conductor rail is aluminium with a stainless-steel
contact strip. Each end of the contact strip is formed into a semi-circle & fixed into grooves in the sides of the conductor rail.
Their might be some drawings that could provide a better explanation.......
I don't know if any top-contact aluminium / stainless steel conductor rails have been used in the UK yet.
FWIW, the Siemens test track in Germany has 3rd rail to test their UK-bound trains, with insulation material surrounding the whole rail except the top surface, this might be something to be considered if the remaining un-electrified Southern lines are to be converted.
