Roydon southbound closure 2 Jan - 28 Feb

I noticed the new easement below referred to in another thread. This confirms rumours from months ago that Roydon southbound would be closed when they upgrade the platform.

When this work was announced last summer there were rumours that the station would close, but as far as I am aware GA did not comment. The consultation by London Travelwatch (http://www.londontravelwatch.org.uk/news/view?id=547) also did not refer to it.

There is now a note on the GA website, which I did not notice when I looked at Jan engineering work a few days ago, anyone know when it went up?

A search on twitter suggests the poster at the station only went up about a week ago. And even this morning GA twitter said they did not know anything about it.

Is it just me, or is the lack of publicity for this pretty significant closure inadequate? Or did I miss some publicity about this?

I thought there was a rule about timetable changes having to be confirmed 12 weeks in advance?








For engineering work the following temporary easement has been published impacting journeys from Roydon to/via London Liverpool Street

Easement added

700603: Due to engineering works that will close the London bound platform at Roydon (Essex) between 02 January 2016 and 28 February 2016, this positive doubleback easement will allow journeys from Roydon to and onward via London Liverpool Street to doubleback at Harlow Town. The platform for journeys to Roydon from London is not affected by these works, and therefore the easement applies in only the London bound direction

From Saturday 2nd January until Sunday 28th February 2016, we are renewing the London bound platform at Roydon station.

During this period trains travelling towards London will not be able to call at Roydon.

On Saturdays and Sundays 2/3, 9/10, 16/17, 23/24, 30/31 January a rail replacement bus will operate between Broxbourne and Harlow Town via Roydon in both directions due to other engineering work. Details of these alterations can be found on the appropriate date of the Planned Alterations calendar on our website.

Other than on the dates listed above please travel as shown below...

Travelling from Roydon towards London.

Please travel from Roydon to Harlow Town and change there for services towards London.

Travelling to Roydon from London.

Normal service.

Travelling to Roydon from Cambridge and Stansted Airport.

Please travel to Broxbourne and change there for services to Roydon.

Travellling from Roydon towards Stansted Airport and Cambridge.

Normal service.

Please use online journey planners to plan your travel to/from Roydon during this period.

Yes I have seen the note on the GA website. I think it was posted in last week or so.

What I am interested in is why this major disruption to the service was not advertised when GA announced in the summer they were planning the works at the station.

Presumably they knew all along that the platform would be unusable?

What can be gained from advertising it in the summer when many would likely forget anyway? (genuine question) It is inconvenient but nice to get a new platform, I wouldn't call it major disruption by any standard though!

What can be gained is the ability to plan your routine to avoid the disruption, perhaps take extra time off work.

Isn't there some rule about having to notify timetable changes 12 weeks in advance?

Personally I would have thought no trains in one direction for 2 months is major disruption on any reasonable definition.

How long does it take to plan a routine of having to double back? As annoying as I'm sure that is! Take time off work for 2 months because of having to double back? Do people dislike commuting that much they'd use their holiday to avoid it? (Genuine question)

It is inconvenient but being realistic I cannot see anyone in the summer thinking to themselves that they'll need to double back next year when they close the up platform at Roydon or use the replacement bus?

I guess we'll have to disagree on that one, there are trains it just involves a double back but fair enough

I'm certain that I saw the information when I checked the page on 5 December, appearing underneath each date in the calendar (by clicking on the circle). This closure does not appear in the calendar anymore. It does appear in the list right at the bottom of the page, but that requires a lot of page scrolling, leaving it liable to be missed.
