I am no fan of paying for the Royal Family - but they put on a good show. I thought it was very well done. Not sure about the trees in Westminster Abbey

It was definitely nice to see all the Union Jacks flying for a change, instead of just an English/Welsh/Scottish/NI one - it's something that seems to be rarely done nowadays. Plus, the bank holiday has been great (if you're off that is!)

I only watched a part of it but is was very well done although I agree that the trees in the Abbey were a little odd!

I would have watched it, but there are three issues:

1. I have no TV Licence and do not want to take unnecessary chances or pay for one that will be almost never used
2. I am not a particularly big fan of weddings and do not wish to go out of my way to watch one that is not related to family or close friends
3. I have my brother and father round and at least one of the two could not care less!

I thought the trees were startling, but fitted very well - after all, the architecture of the abbey was originally based on trees. The music had too much Parry for my taste, but was very well done. And once again, Britain has knocked spots off the rest of the world when it comes to pageantry - and this does bring a fair bit of income for the country. I do wish the curmudgeonly old fogies (of whatever age) would look on the bright side occasionally!

To look on the bright side you need enough light in your existing location. If anything it showed that the rich can have whatever they want while the poor are being squeezed from all sides a la Stalin.
I wonder how many couples have postponed getting married due to financial issues

I watched it in a state of bewilderment at times. I mean, great - two people who seem to be in love got married, I'm pleased for them and all that, but screaming like a 5 year old as they went down the mall?! Give me bloody strength!

The music at these events is always wonderful, but I was left slightly underwhelmed this time around. Of course, the performers were exceptional. Parry was just a perfect choice for the bridal procession, without a doubt, although I don't think it would have made Catherine feel any less nervous! And the choice of hymns was really good and appropriate. However, I wasn't sure about the motet, or the anthem; they just didn't seem to fit with the occasion. And, although "Crown Imperial" is a wonderful piece of music, it just didn't feel appropriate for the procession at the end of the service; just not quite the right feeling of celebration IMHO.

Congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, but I can't help but feel it was ruined by the absurd news coverage over the last six months (and, in particular, the last fortnight).

Unfortunately I can see it especially given the way our media go after the Royals. That being said I wish them a happy life together - I've no quarrel with them as a couple, my objection is to the coverage

The music was truly awesome, inspired move having an orchestra. There were a couple of cheesy moments though - yes I am talking about the Rutter! - and the interesting fanfare before the national anthem at the end.

I think the ceremony was pitched exactly right, which is unusually mature for the UK, I feel.

But then again, I rather optimistically that this marriage will last, having seen them (on TV) today.

The other big event, Shuttle Endeavour's last launch, has just been scrubbed, so I'm a bit miffed that I might have to miss some of the snooker final for it.

I celebrated the royal wedding by...
1) going to Homebase and getting a couple of lamp standard fittings (for some reason, BOTH the bayonets on both my bedside lights went kerflewy), then fitting them, and...
2) watching the IPL cricket on ITV4. Chris Gayle was in a destructive frame of mind, till the leg spinner Sharma did him for pace.

[Rant] I regard the royal family as an anachronism - a total waste of space. I cannot give any amount of respect to a group of people who do absolutely nothing, live in comparative luxury AND receive obscene amounts of money from us - the taxpayer. When they go out and give us the priviledge of their prescence, they expect us to bow and scrape. Now, to top it all, one of these sponsored scroungers gets married, and we're supposed to gor "Hurrah!" Not a chance - my view is "Oh God, here's another member of the uppers class who wants to sponge off the state".
I used to live on a street that came off The Royal Mile in Edinburgh. Every summer, Liz & Phil come down and doss down at Holyrood for a few nights. When they were here, it was murder for the local residents, as they were all treated as potential anti-royal assassins, so whenever I nipped out for a pint, there were all these men in dark suits with curly leads coming out of their ears! On one occasion when I went out for the evening paper, I was in the Royal Mile when the cavalcade went past. I showed my displeasure by deliberately showing my back (no, NOT my backside) to whoever it was, while the rest of the crowd cheered and waved.
Someone should tell Harry that his real surname is Hewitt, cos it sure isn't Windsor![/Rant]

Well,

I really enjoyed it, the pomp and circumstance, the cheering crowds, a couple of young people clearly in love and enjoying their day and all those thousands of people out in London and all around the world can't be wrong. As for them being scroungers, both William and Harry are serving Officers in RAF and Army respectively, Prince Charles served in the Royal Navy and as did Prince Andrew who also served in the Falklands as a helicopter pilot, and think of all the money they do bring in, people come from all over the world to see events like the birthday parade, changing of the guard and to take joy in the fact we have a Monarch. The thing that always makes me laugh is that people say get rid of them, and replace them with what? A president who cost the same if not more, remember when Tony Blair was PM, he wanted his own jet similar to Air Force One that the American President has, and a president wouldn't bring in the cash, who wants to come and see a president? Hasn't got the same pulling power.

Just my views of course but I'm sure somebody will take offence,

Pleased that people seem to have enjoyed it and it's perhaps 'lightened the national mood' at least for a short while.

I was doing Rochdale and Southport and then back to Manchester Picadilly. Trains and stations were lovely and quiet although there were quite a few miserable northern train crew today. Not so the young lady who brought me home on the XX:06 to Wigan Wallgate. She was skipping about the platform and laughing before departure. Not seen her before: have a feeling she may be a newbie train driver

Not so the young lady who brought me home on the XX:06 to Wigan Wallgate. She was skipping about the platform and laughing before departure. Not seen her before: have a feeling she may be a newbie train driver

There's a female guard who works for TPE who I've seen a few times, she's exceptionally cheery and seems to literally happily skip down the aisles, while laughing and joking with everyone!
