So VT are running full weekday service on this day, I fancy sampling Brekkie in 1st then returning back to London with not much dwell in GLC.

Iternary as follows
Coventry
London

London
Glasgow (1st)

then either
Glasgow
Birmingham New Street (VT or XC if I can get the HST)

Glasgow
London Kings Cross

Any of the ticket gurus work their magic for a normal adult fare as cheap as possible, rather not use LM down to Euston if I can avoid it

How much time is "not much"? What will you do if there are major delays? Anyway all I can suggest is searching for Advance tickets, but it's very short notice now so you will not get the best deals.

You may know but all weekend 1st class upgrades are £25 on Friday 29th & full weekday catering is provided.

There are Advances still available, but it's not going to be cheap - probably over £150 for what you're requesting. The 0730 from Euston has an Advance available to Glasgow for £47.50 (plus £25 Weekend First upgrade). There are also some Advances on EC back to Kings Cross.
