Royal Scots Grey

Travelling on the Tyne & Wear Metro system on Saturday heading toward Sunderland from Newcastle about 2pm and pulled alongside Class 55 Deltic 'Royal Scots Grey' just out of Pelaw station. As the mainline and Metro line are one in the same between Pelaw and Sunderland we were held at a Red Light. Being a sunny day the windows were open and we were treated to RSG thundering past us with it's distinct engine scream! What a lovely sight!

However I can't find anything out which tells me what it was doing heading to Sunderland (or that area), does anyone have any info?

working 0N51 North Blyth to Tyne Dock for stabling after working Alcan trips.

Really? They use preserved Deltics for stuff like that? Must be short of newer LOCO's for that! Pleased to see her nonetheless!

It's not often that this happens, but GBRf are short on 66's with a number broken and an increase in traffic levels. These workings are very self contained and don't disrupt much else whilst working...

Yes GBRf are hiring "RSG" for a few months (until July I think) for a couple of daily trip workings between Blyth and Lynemouth, plus movements round to Tyne Dock for stabling.

Absolutely beautiful, even better than when 37s were the regular traction (Were the local trips a Transrail job back in the day, or a Loadhaul one? I know the Fort William to Blyth working was Transrail).

As hougtimo says, one engine is definitely looking decidedly rough though!

Yeah, one of the staff said that one of the Deltics were running on one engine, think we found which of them it was

Nice! Very smoky indeed! I know exactly where this is may need to have a run out sometime and take my own video! Anyone have info on it's movements over the next week or so?

There's nothing wrong with the engine, look up any old photos of Deltics and you'll see that. It seems predominantly one engine as it isn't till around 30mph that it starts to power on the second engine, which results in another identical plume of clag. It's because the engines are two-stroke running on a mixture of fuel and oil, crikey knows how much oil they get through!

I believe D9016 is currently running on one engine, certainly was when I visited the ELR earlier this year.
