Rover/standard off-peak ticket combinations

I want to travel from York to Leeds this Sunday, but I also want to purchase a West Yorkshire Day Rover to use when I get there.

If I buy a York-Micklefield return (the extent of the WYDR validity) - do I need to travel on a Northern stopping service or could I use TransPennine/Cross Country services?

I've seen conflicting info on this in other threads. I always believed that the train had to stop at the station where you intend to 'swap' tickets, but some are saying that this is no longer the case?

Yes you can, if you hold a day zonal ticket, season ticket or a rover/ranger then the train does not have to stop.

Would you be buying your Wayfarer at York, before you begin your journey? Otherwise, your Micklefield-Leeds portion of the journey will be unpaid for.

Good point. As it happens I'm aiming to catch the 0809 TPE service from York so the ticket office will be open. I'm sure I'll be able to buy the West Yorkshire Day Rover from there. However there are many scenarios where it wouldn't be possible to purchase the rover in advance, what would the rule be then?

According to what I have seen others post, you can buy onboard if the TVM at York didn't sell the ticket you want, but I wouldn't take the risk personally.

I've done this many times in West Yorkshire & South Yorkshire - never had an issue buying on the train?

In theory, it is different to failing to buy before you board, because technically there were not the facilities to sell you the appropriate ticket. My concern though is if you get to Leeds and the Train Manager hasn't been available to sell you a ticket, packed train etc, you will be asked questions by Northern Revenue Protection Officers, Carlisle Security. There is already a massive thread on here which suggests that some of their officers lack the knowledge of how to handle such situations, so you may find yourself in hot water.

Thanks for your help, fortunately it won't be an issue in this case. Would be better if TVM's could sell rangers and rovers, I don't know if there's a reason why they can't. They may even be certain ones that do, but I've never come across one.

You will have no problems buying York - Micklefield plus WY DayRover at York ticket office, if it's open.

This is valid on non-stop trains as per the National Rail Conditions of Travel

Some staff may be unaware of the change from the NRCoT (Condition 19, as was) to NRCoT (Condition 14) around 12 months ago and may still think the train has to call at Micklefield for the combination to be valid.

Also if you want the Train & Bus ticket, some bus drivers won't like it being on normal rail ticket stock (York station may not have the proper stock) but if you want Train only, that's not an issue. I personally have never had an issue, but then I tend to follow someone else onto the bus who has the right stock, and that has always worked for me.

Cheers Yorkie. I'm on the TPE as I type - had no problems at all buying the tickets at York but the TPE guard didn't seem to like my ticket combination!
