Rover/Ranger Validation?

I'm planning on taking out a HOE 3 in 7 day Rover mid March in order to visit Oxford (Day 1), Shrewsbury (Day 2) and Chester (Day 3) and returning home each evening. I have already purchased 2 out of the 3 Day Return tickets needed to get me from SLR (Sleaford) to DBY (Derby), where the Rover will take over.

My question regards the Rover 'ticket' that requires boxes to be 'ticked' for each days journey?

Can someone please advise exactly what is required here? Do the ticket boxes have to be filled in with what info and do any railway employee need to witness the info being provided?

You just need to fill the date boxes in with the date you are travelling before you board the first train of the day. Beware that it can be a little tricky to get a normal pen to work properly to fill them in.

Others may have different suggestions, but I usually prefer to write on tickets using the smaller tip of a Sharpie CD/DVD marker. I find it's fairly durable.

We generally use gel pens at home....would these work? or would they smear?

It's just a paper ticket like any other, so just use a biro? Works fine?

Biro's don't always work very well for writing on tickets. Sometimes it's OK, but not always. I'd say using a gel pen won't work very well at all.

I would advise against using a gel pen. A biro should work fine, although you might need to press down a bit harder than usual, but if the ink doesn't flow, you may have a problem. A sharpie or other permanent markers would be perfect.

The date needs to be entered in the form DD/MM.

Thanks to tsr and bb21...and everybody else that has contributed, I have bought the Sharpie thingy from eBay - fine and ultra fine.

..something which, in my admittedly limited experience, is not communicated clearly or at all to passengers in any publicity material, on the ticket, or by sales staff or anywhere else where someone (without prior knowledge) might find it readily.

Of course, railway staff, many of whom (or all?) are familiar with the correct use of "boxes" may find it hard to accept that an unwitting passenger may innocently present with an undated ticket box - having expected, for example, that these boxes are there for a member of train staff to complete (as if "clipping" the ticket).

Interesting point, I just checked an expired Rover of mine and there are zero instructions about what you do with the date boxes. It doesn't say who fills them in or even that they must be filled in.

I'd not really thought about it as I already knew how to use it but I can see the potential for confusion.

Yes Goatboy....I had a similar problem some years ago when I did an almost identical trip, especially the Oxford leg. The TM on the XC service waved me towards the ticket office on arrival at the station saying they were resposible but on chatting to this guy, it became clear that I had to fill in the boxes myself. I can't for the life of me recall the format, but everybody esle after that encounter didn't give me any bother.
