Quick query:

Does anyone know if Leeds to York is valid via Castleford ?

With the new TPE service, this is now a practical route with a change at Cass.

Technically not unless you go that way on a direct train, i.e. one of the TPE services which run this way overnight or during engineering works.

In practice I doubt it would be questioned and if it was, explaining you're changing at Castleford would likely result in it being accepted it as it's a perfectly reasonable route. It's no longer than travelling via Harrogate, which is of course perfectly valid.

It should be added to the Routeing Guide as a permitted route for journeys like this, but sadly the industry is very reactive rather than proactive when it comes to things like this.

Thanks. Yes it really ought to be. I hadn't thought about the Harrogate loop being longer.

Allowing reasonable routes would be a true simplification of fares that would benefit passengers.

Good God almighty, it's £19.40 for a cheap day return from Leeds to York now.

This country is a basket case.

It's not valid, which is bonkers, given it's a normal route with regular scheduled services:
OUTWARD JOURNEY York to Leeds.
Mileage 32.05 (Shortest possible 25.27)

Origin Routeing Point – York
Terminus is a routeing point

Destination Routeing Point – LEEDS GROUP
Terminus is a routeing point

Through Mapped Route
Checking YRK-G22-G16
Off route at LEEDS GROUP
Not Permitted: Not traceable as mapped route.

Not Permitted: Not traceable as mapped route.
If a good, proactive person was in charge of the Routeing Guide, problems like this wouldn't happen.

Hopefully the relevant person will see it and reactively correct it.

You can try contacting the relevant train companies (TPE may be your best bet) and they may well refer it to RDG to be looked at.

Castleford - York - Harrogate is also an example of a useful route especially now the TPE services have gone hourly but not at the £5.50 extra compared to a 'via Leeds only' ticket!
