I have a season ticket from Patchway to Bath Spa, valid on any "permitted route".

To me, that says anything and everything between Patchway-Filton Abbey Wood-Stapleton Road-Lawrence Hill-Temple Meads-Keynsham-Oldfield Park-Bath Spa.

But would Bristol Parkway fit into there somewhere?

It's all very oolly-woolly.......

I moved this from the Grantham - London topic.

See http://www.atoc.org/about-atoc/rail-settlement-plan/routeing-guide

Routeing points (RPs) for Patchway:
Bristol Group, Gloucester, Newport (S Wales) (Source)

Bath Spa is a RP (Source)

So you need to check for appropriate RPs at Patchway. No such check is needed at Bath of course. Unsurprisingly the only appropriate RP is Bristol Group.

Bristol Group consists of: Bristol Parkway, Bristol Temple Meads, Filton Abbey Wood, Lawrence Hill, Stapleton Road (source)

Bristol Group to Bath Spa permitted routes are on map CE (source)

Map CE permits Bristol Group to Bath Spa on the direct line via Keynsham (source).

Therefore, the following are permitted:

  • Mapped routes: Patchway - Bristol Group - Bath on map CE
  • The shortest route (including routes up to 3 miles longer than the absolute shortest)
  • Direct trains (if any exist)
So it is valid to go
Patchway - Bristol Parkway - Bristol Temple Meads - Keynsham - Bath Spa
and it is also valid to go
Patchway - Bristol Temple Meads - Keynsham - Bath Spa

No other route is permitted (unsurprisingly!)

and maybe if everyone from Patchway bought their ticket from Pilning instead then maybe it may get its once a week each way service increased! If nothing else it would at least raise some eyebrows with the guards lol!

G'day

There is only one train a day from Patchway to Bristol Parkway which doesn't require a change of train, and that one goes via Bristol Temple Meads anyway.

Not sure why you are asking if your Patchway -Bath ticket is valid via Bristol Parkway. :-?

Cheers

Well, since Chuckles drives to the station anyway, it might be useful to know which other stations his ticket is valid from in case of missing a train, or of knowing it's going to be a 2-car instead of 3, or of travelling somewhere where could buy a ticket from either TM or Parkway.

That and curiosity :)

Indeed, being able to travel from Bristol parkway gives Chuckles more options should he want to travel at a different time. This sort of flexibility is vital if rail is to be seen as a viable alternative to the car. If the ticket was not vlaid at Parkway, Chuckles would be limited to the once an hour Patchway service, or going to Filton Abbey Wood.

LexyBoy and Greenback both hit the nail on the head :)

One train an hour from Patchway sucks, particularly when it's short-formed and you can't get on.

Alternatives are always desirable.
