Can any fellow member clarify how a journey can be routed using contactless payment. For example, a journey from Richmond to Whitechapel via Clapham Junction and Peckham Rye. I'd tap in with my credit card at Richmond and tap out at Whitechapel. To ensure I am not charged the more expensive fare via Zone 1, would the router at Clapham Junction recognize my credit card? On a separate issue, are Oyster cards automatically cancelled with any remaining credit confiscated by TfL if they are not used for a period of 12 months or more?

If you touch the pink reader at Clapham Junction then you will be charged the non-Zone 1 fare. Scroll down to the bottom of this page for details.

Oyster credit does not expire.
