If a journey between two stations in a Routeing Group share the same group.

Can you travel either :

Direct from A to B or B to A via C aslong as the journey is within 3 miles of the shortest route.

So A to B is 3 miles & B to A via C is just under 6 miles.

And unless there is a BOJ restriction on the ticket. You could stop at C for a few hours.

I read it online on National Routeing Guide as you can but just checking to make sure.

Independent of the Routeing Points involved, you can take an alternative route within 3 miles of the shortest route. There is nothing in the Routeing Guide that says this can't involve a double-back. There would need to be a specific negative easement for that journey/route to rule it out.

There is also a provision in the Routeing Guide which lets you double back via a common Routeing Point, although the wording implies that it is for interchange purposes rather than breaking your journey.

Longport to Stoke on Trent is about 2.75 miles (one way), which rules out using the 'within 3 miles' clause.
