Here's an (vaguely) interesting question.

An anytime single from Ledbury (LED) to Swinton Mancs (SNN) costs £37.60.
Ledbury has two routing points: Hereford (HFD) and Worcester (WOF).
HFD to SNN costs £31.30, so it's a valid route.
WOF to SNN costs £47.50, so it fails the fares check.

However, there appears to be 2 mapped routes from HFD to SNN via WOF and Birmingham.

Given this oddity, is it technically valid (forgetting about any shortest route rules) to use a LED to SNN ticket via WOF? Surely I'm not allowed to use WOF as my routeing point - I must use HFD so going via WOF is doubling back?

Yes, I know in reality I would buy a HFD to SNN ticket and start at LED, but I might want to come back the "other way" through Shrewsbury.

Which RP for Swinton are you using? Have you fare checked them from Ledbury?

Well, the rules say that mapped routes are from origin to origin RP to destination RP to destination and that you can't double back unless an easement allows it. So it looks like via Birmingham/Wolverhampton is not a valid route from Ledbury to Swinton unless it happens to be the shortest route, or no more than 3 miles further than the shortest route.

It happens to be the shortest route, yes - bad example. A better one might be Ledbury to Hooton, where the same anomoly applies but the shortest route is via Hereford.

I don't suppose any guard would query you being off route going through WOF but I think you're right that it's technically not valid.

Or a through train, although I don't imagine you'll find many :)

It's all a bit daft, really... Whilst it is clear that there isn't a 'hierarchy' of routes, by which I mean that a journey from A to C via B doesn't automatically include all permitted routes from B to C, it seems a bit extreme to exclude a route from the related RP that actually passes through the origin. Obviously, the way the RG is set up means that this kind of anomoly is possible - is it actually all that comon, though?

There's some dispute on this forum about that - there is an example in the NRG Detail document that says you cannot travel through a routeing point that has been discarded by the fares check rule. (on page 6).
