Route excess possible on Solent crossing?

Period return tickets between London and stations in the Island Line are cheaper than 2 singles, both in the case of Off-Peak and Super-Off-Peak; however, tickets are all explicitly routed via the ferry or via the hovercraft (and the prices are a bit different too).

If I had an Off-Peak or Super-Off-Peak return valid on one route, could I pay for a route excess to go out one way and return the other?

And what about with a Semi-Flex return, where the outbound is like an Advance and the return like a regular Off-Peak - again, is a route excess possible so as to do the two crossings using the different services?

If you can actually get someone to issue it, then it would be valid.

It's possible you may be refused as the restriction might be interpreted as akin to a TOC restriction, rather than a 'geographical' restriction.

We were always told not to X/S third party add on tickets. How is this different to a TOC specific ticket?
