Route Confirmation 1994

Good morning, apologies if this seems an obvious question but I wanted to check what route a service I used from February 1994 would have taken. I travelled direct Stevenage to Glasgow Central (GNER?) with 91002 and wanted to confirm if the route will have taken Edinburgh Waverley - Carstairs - Glasgow Central as my notebook is otherwise vague.

Yes, it went via Carstairs (and Motherwell).

GNER would have taken over in April 1996.

My trip to Glasgow was a work trip on Monday 27th February 1995 (not 1994 as I'd said!) and would have involved travel up in the afternoon with overnight in Glasgow for a meeting the following day. The 1S29 13.30 sounds promising as the train I'd have taken and knowing I didn't change at Waverley. I have no note entry for my return, likely on the Wednesday.

This was the only electric way to go in 1994 between Edinburgh and Glasgow, it was done in 1991 as part of the ECML electrification, although it benefits as much (if not more) the WCML. The through ECML trains never really got much of a load here, the Queen Street line being faster and more frequent, and have been progressively cut back. Nowadays there are five different electric routes between the two cities, which is probably something of a record.

It’s a shame because it gave a York-Glasgow service, for example, which I used from Manchester to Glasgow although it wasn’t an obvious route for most.

XC took over the 2-hourly ECML services to Glasgow north of Doncaster/York, but these have withered away too now.
The WCML service has been much improved of course north of Preston (on the days it doesn't collapse), but still isn't back to pre-covid times.
