This may seem like a silly question, thats probably been asked before but here goes.
If I buy a ticket form Lincoln Central to Nottingham, which has Route: Any Permitted printed on it do I still have to take the EMT service Direct to Nottingham? Or could I go Lincoln - Sheffield - Nottingham, or Lincoln - Sleaford - Nottingham? I understand that it wouldtakethe micky to go via London or Glasgow, but would I get away withthe above examples? What arethe rules?
Many thanks in advance.

The rules are all here ..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Routeing_Guide

As I understand it, Lincoln and Nottingham are both routeing points, therefore only the shortest route between them is valid (i.e. on EMT)

I'm sorry, but I disagree. The routeing guide is here and if both origin and destination are routeing points then all that means is that the fares check is unnecessary. I'll post back later with more details of the valid routes.

Well that didn't take too long.

Lincoln and Nottingham are both routeing points. Valid routes include the shortest route, the route of any direct trains, plus any routes shown on map EM. In this case that map only provides one route, which is via Newark and is also probably the shortest route.

ahhh I see now, sorry routeing and fares are'nt something I'm all that knowledgeable on. But it seems to me to be a little misleading to print Route: Any Permitted on a ticket, as this seems to imply that as long as for example your journey starts at Lincoln and ends at Nottingham, then you could take any reasonable route, before today I had no knowledge ofthe routeing guide or the rules, and I've been using the railways since I was a kid. It seems to me that a novice rail traveller could be caught out in this way and end up getting PF'd forwhat would be a totally honest mistake.

When you were a kid, staff were allowed to apply common sense. Not any more!

Maybe but I'd hardly call via Sheffield reasonable. I should point out I'm looking at a map of the UK rather than a rail map.

Out of interest what would go on the ticket instead of Any Permitted?

I think a lot of people think "Route: Any Permitted" means "Any route permitted" - I know I used to - when in fact it means "Any permitted route".

In reality, you are unlikely to be challenged when taking any reasonable route, and in general (though not always) reasonable routes are permitted routes.

Which routes between Lincoln & Nottingham would you say are "reasonable" but are not permitted? I guess, you could say Lincoln-Retford-Newark-Lincoln or Lincoln-Grantham-Nottingham, at a push. Maybe.

You can be issued a Penalty Fare (PF) if boarding a PF train at a PF station, and you are 'caught' within the applicable PF scheme, and if your ticket cannot be excessed using a change of route excess.

PFs do not apply from Lincoln.

PFs apply from Nottingham, but only on certain trains, I do not think that they apply on trains to Lincoln.

I was just using Lincoln to nottingham as am example as I know of 3 routes that could possably be used. I'm starting to understand the way this works now.

Most people I come across who are "off route" seem to interpret " Route : Any Permitted" as "Any Route".

What if I wanted to travel from Derby to Lincoln via Doncaster, would this be an acceptable route?

Take a look at the routeing guide and see what it says. If you get stuck, post here and we can assist you.

Maybe Lincoln-Worksop-Nottingham? As other stations along the Robin hood line are valid to Lincoln via Nottingham and Worksop (like mansfield).
