Just playing SimSig Waterloo and it made me think of the number of services which run from Waterloo to Waterloo, what other location in the UK has services which both start and terminate at the same station?

2RXX London Waterloo to London Waterloo via Richmond & Hounslow
2VXX London Waterloo to London Waterloo via Hounslow & Richmond

2KXX London Waterloo to London Waterloo via Kingston & Richmond
2OXX London Waterloo to London Waterloo via Richmond & Kingston

I can think of two more from Scotland but I will leave them to others, I've started with London Waterloo, Have fun guys

Edinburgh - Edinburgh via the Fife Circle is the first to come to mind.

You would think the Oldham Loop Line would have had services starting and ending at the same station.

But if I recall many started at Manchester Vic, went to Rochdale via Oldham, and then returned to Manchester Vic via Mills Hill but continued onto Kirkby or Wigan Wallgate. And the reverse, of course.

Don't remember many, if any, starting AND terminating at Manc Vic.

There is the Hamilton Circle, Even if the trains officially terminate at Motherwell but they do carry on round the circle once they have called at Motherwell (Unless its a Larkhall or Lanark Service). Used to know the timetables off top of my head but, unless there has been a change, a lot of these services are Dalmuir to Dalmuir, or Milngavie to Milngavie.

What about Liverpool, there's Chester to Chester or equivilents... via the Liverpool Deep Level.

Surely some trains on the Valleys start and stop from the same place, or call at the same station twice.

No because the service has to start AND terminate at the same station so have a obvious start and finish so a Glasgow Central to Glasgow Central via Cathcart service most certainly would be considered, also note the OP of that thread you linked to was asking that with the alterations to the Circle line in London, if we would see an end to Standard gauge continuous run railway lines, with no obvious beginning or end.

One example not yet mentioned is the Cathcart Circle. EDIT: Ajax just mentioned it!

The Hamilton Circle is an odd one. One train each hour actually does run around the circle, with only a few minutes booked in Motherwell. But; they are separate services with separate headcodes, they aren't shown as doing this in the timetable, it's indicated as a change of train on the journey planners despite being the same train. Furthermore, in the rush hour, they don't actually go around the circle. They'll generally operate Coatbridge Central-Glasgow via Hamilton and Lanark-Glasgow via Uddingston.

So, as a circle service, the Hamilton Circle is all but lost, sadly.

Salisbury-Romsey-Southampton Central-Easteigh-Chandlers Ford-Romsey runs in both directions (save for the early start Totton starter) so arguably it is a circular from Romsey. However that's stretching the point a bit!

Has there ever been a 'circular' via the Windsor Lines, Virginia Water, Weybridge and then the main back to Waterloo?

Tyne and Wear Metro loop via the coast, although they serve different platforms at Monument.

The Cathcart circle obviously.

No one has mentioned the Glasgow Subway, thats a true roundabout!!

The Glasgow Subway just goes round and round in circles, though, rather than starting and terminating anywhere.

The services are Lanark to Dalmuir via Shieldmuir,Bellshill and Yoker,Lanark to Milngavie via Holytown and Blantyre,Motherwell to Dalmuir via Bellshill and Yoker,Motherwell to Milngavie via Blantyre,Larkhall to Dalmuir via Singer(Monday to Saturday)



The services on Sunday are Motherwell to Balloch via Blantyre and Yoker,Motherwell to Milngavie via Bellshill,Larkhall to Partick and Lanark to Milngavie via Shieldmuir and Bellshill!

The frequency of services on table 130 make it difficult to tell what does what, but it looks like some services from Treherbert go round the Cardiff loop and back up to Treherbert.

Other services off the valleys go to Barry Island/Penarth/Bridgend via VOG.

The Coryton seems to be a through service to Radyr via Cardiff.
This makes it almost a loop, Coryton and Radyr are within walking distance of each other.

Edit - forgot the Yorkshire loop, there's a Selby-Leeds-Wakefield-Huddersfield-Halifax-Bradford-Leeds-Selby service. Really just a series of stoppers joined together using the same unit.

There's a service from Bedford that goes round the Wimbledon/Sutton loop before returning to Bedford.

From my observations at Cardiff Central, the Treherbert trains don't seem to go round the loop. They appear to turn round at Central, heading towards Canton so as not to block platforms. They reappear later and look like empty stock - they are not announced and no one gets on or off.

Spot on Greenback butt.

Treherbert (thats the Rhondda Valley)/Cdf turn around at Canton ECS (2 tph)
Coryton to Radyr shuttle back and forth (2 tph)
The Rhymney line services all got to Penarth (4 tph from Bargoed to Penarth)
Aberdare (2tph) /Merthyr (2 tph) services are linked from Abercynon (4tph) to Barry (4 tph) then Barry island (3 tph) and Vale of Glamorgan (1tph).

I dont think the Selby service does a full loop as it doesnt go via Outwood between Leeds and Wakefield. It does Selby-Leeds-Bradford-Halifax-Brighouse-Huddusfield-Wakefield K, Wakefield W, then terminates into the sidings and goes back the same way (i think)
