Round robin suggestions

I've been getting ideas for round robins in Norfolk, the Lake District and Scottish Highlands + Islands. The former goes like this:

GA - Norwich > Sheringham
NNR - Sheringham > Holt
Bus - Holt > Aylsham
BVR - Aylsham > Wroxham
GA - Wroxham > Norwich

Trouble is, I can't seem to find much if any routes for the third leg that don't involve going back on myself.

The Lake District one must ideally involve the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway, Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway, one or more of the steam ferries and the Cumbrian Coast line.

The Highland one should ideally involve any of the following: West Highland line, Kyle of Lochalsh line, Far North line, Loch Ness, Skye, Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland Isles.

All but the latter should ideally be achievable within a single day.

What are your best recommendations for where to go and when, ideally without going back on myself if possible?

If you don't want to double back on yourself you could use the bus from Norwich to Sheringham:

44, 44A, X40, X41, X44 - Holt - Bodham - Sheringham - Cromer - Norwich

The Lake District one must ideally involve the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway, Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway, one or more of the steam ferries and the Cumbrian Coast line.

The Lakes Day Ranger ticket at £29.90 will enable you to visit the Lakeside & Haverthwaite railway (via X6 bus from Grange-over-Sands or Ulverston stations), the Ravenglass & Eskdale railway (via Ravenglass station), the Cumbrian Coast line (section between Barrow-in-Furness and Workington stations) and a half length cruise on Lake Windermere and much more. Also valid on vast majority of connecting buses in Cumbria. Be a long day to do the lot, but just about do-able.

You'd have to do the R&E both ways, of course, but it's a brilliant trip if the two preserved line timetables can be made to fit.

Another way would be FEC X29 Bus Norwich - Fakenham, Sanders service 9 Fakenham - Holt NNR station, NNR Holt - Sheringham & then GA from Sheringham - Norwich. The first leg runs out along the A1067, which passes through several places formerly served by the former M&GN branch from Norwich City to Melton Constable.

For scotland you could do:

Glasgow - Mallaig - ferry to skye, taxi to Kyle of Lochalsh then to inverness.

Thats probably one day in itself - obviously the far north line is just up and down.

I've done many of these round robins (albeit not as scenic) as part of station bashing/bagging, as they are usually good value for money since often a return to X station is valid both ways e.g. a return to Horsham is valid via both the Dorking line as well as Faygate.

Some of my favourites (cut back to exclude travel to/from Cambridge) that I have done/hope to do are:

Stowmarket to Lowestoft, out via the East Suffolk Line, back via the Wherry Lines
London/Ebbsfleet to Dover, out via Canterbury East, back via Ashford or Margate
London to Aylesbury, out via Amersham, back via High Wycombe
The classic 'Scottish Grand Tour': Edinburgh-Glasgow-Mallaig-Skye-Kyle-Inverness-Edinburgh (optionally via Aberdeen)
Peterborough-Tamworth, out via Leicester, back via Nottingham
Liverpool to Southport/Ormskirk, out with Merseyrail, back via Wigan

It may be worth checking out the Sanders Coaches website as they run most of the services north of Norwich
