Definitely not LNER, my first thought was a 222.

100% that is an East Midland Railways 222 first class.

Midland Main Line, the power station is Ratcliffe-on-Soar.

You can just about make out East Midlands Parkway station, and they go into the Redhill Tunnel shortly afterwards.

He was on the right train and didn't travel from London. He was travelling up after doing an exhibition.

Eurosport coverage has just cleared this up. He went from St Pancras to Sheffield and then got in a car to York.

Well that does make it a bit weird - why didn't he just get LNER direct to York?

Possible explanations: Maybe he had business in Sheffield, or it was one of the LNER engineering closure weekends, or there were no 1st reservations left on LNER for the relevant timeframe.

Or someone had suggested meeting in Sheffield and then driving up, which would give an hour or two to chat.
