Was reading a Forum topic about Southend to London terminals, any permitted and someone mentioned about going via the shortest route.

Does this mean then I could not go from Romford to Manchester via Norwich? Would I only be able to go via London ( Don't really like using the Underground)

You can check the routeing guide, and see if it is a permitted route. Instinct tells me it would not be, but I am usually wrong when it comes to routeing!

You can always buy seperate tickets if the route you want to take is not a permitted one.

If the Underground is a problem for you, have you considered bus, taxi or walking between Liverpool Street and Euston?

How do i go about checking the routing just looking on the route maps?

Because it would be a train from Romford to Shenfield
Shenfield to Norwich
Norwich to Manchester

According to the RG, Romford to Manchester is routed "LONDON". London to Manchester allows three basic routes: Paddington/Marylebone -> Birmingham -> Manchester, Euston to Manchester via the WCML and St. Pancras -> Sheffield -> Manchester.

None of these routes allow travel out from Liverpool St.

You can't be penalty fared for being off route. But you would have to buy a ticket to cover the parts of your journey that are off route. I doubt many guards would consider Romford - Manchester on a London - Norwich service acceptable. And if it isn;t valid, they'd be right!

If you really do want to go via Norwich, buy seperate tickets!

it's hard to say - you can't be penalty-fared for being on the wrong route (although you do have to pay the difference) but I am not sure that would apply here.
You may be so far off-route that it is considered as travelling without a valid ticket.

There are legal journeys avoiding the underground that are 2 hours quicker than your proposed route, so I wouldn't be surprised if you have some problems.

Hardly the most onerous Underground journey though- five stops on the Circle/H&C/Met line.

I can't check the routeing guide right now, but I would be suprised if heading north-east from Romford was the shortest route. The shortest route is measured by the mileages in the National Rail Timetable (except table 51), and so it will not include the underground part of the journey or any walking distances.

If you really have an aversion to the Underground, have you considered Overground instead? Romford - Stratford - Willesden Junction - Watford Junction - Manchester.

'London' is the only entry in the permitted routes table, so no chance of allowing via Norwich.
and going via Norwich is a good 100 miles longer than the shortest route!

Or there's bus route 205 (an extra £1.10 on Oyster or £2.00 cash each way).

I don't believe there are any direct services from Watford Junction to Manchester.

Why not?

Genuine question, because depending on what your reason is, it may not be an issue.

If you don't like going deep underground, then take the direct route, which is a cut-and-cover route of the Metropolitan Railway, this is just below street level and is not deep at all. You go far, far deeper on most National Rail lines with tunnels.

If you don't like being in small spaces, then you will be pleased to know that the A Stock Metropolitan trains are the widest stock in the country! They are not tube trains.

If you don't like escalators, then there aren't any, as this route is immediately below street level.

If you don't like tunnels, then go by bus from Liverpool St to King's Cross (but you will be going in tunnels on National Rail anyway)

having now read the other thread; it seems that he just wants a ticket from Norwich to Manchester, but has noticed that it's a lot cheaper from Romford - it doesn't have anything to do with avoiding the underground.
