I am making a list of trains which are owned directly by the operator rather than by Leasing companies.

So far the stock that I can think of is.

The Class 483 which is directly owned by South Western Trains.

The Class 121s which are used by Chiltern Railways I think are directly owned by Chiltern.

The Class 121 used by Arriva Trains Wales on the Cardiff Bay branch I think was owned by Arriva Trains Wales but that is now withdrawn.

What other stock is owned directly by the operator?

Arriva UK advertised the 121 that was used on Cardiff services as up for sale. I'm not sure if anyone's made an offer or agreed to purchase it yet.

Now owned by Chiltern but is up for sale.

FGW & First Group Rail Holdings own 12 HST power cars and Mk3s, all the 08s within the FGW fleet and I'm not sure if they still own them but 4? Class 143s.

I think Arriva Trains Wales planned to buy some stock once but in the end they didn't.

I remember when Virgin Trains lost the franchise in 2012 some people were worried that Virgin Trains weren't going to allow First to use their Pendolinos and they would have been withdrawn and replaced by HSTs similar to those used by First Great Western little did they know that the stock is owned by Angel Trains.

I think the worry was that 319s from FCC would be replacing "Virgin's" pendolinos

Up here some people made comments about it being bad that First Group had won as they only running 3 carriages on a lot of services. So they seemed to be under the impression First would use 185s or similar on West Coast services.

If memory serves, the Chiltern Mark 3s are owned by one (or more) of M40 Trains (Chiltern's immediate parent), DB Regio UK or DB Schenker, along with "a quantity" of Mark 3s stored at Long Marston.

That would possibly suit a preserved railway who wanted to run partly on network rail metals (the Swanage Railway is the only example that I can think of)

FGW do not own the power cars and coaches - their ownership by First Group is independent.

Weren't the 4(?) "Swanline" 143s owned by local authorities in South Wales originally?
The 7 remaining 155s and the 10 144 centre cars WERE owned by WYPTE until they were sold to Porterbrook a few years back, in exchange for extra government funding IIRC. One condition of the sale was that they continue to be used on West Yorkshire services for the rest of the Northern franchise, but I'm not sure if this also applies to the current direct award situation. They're still here so far though.

The 144s are expected to transfer to the next franchise operator who'll use them until they get a combination of cascaded DMUs and EMUs and new 'self-powered' trains to allow them to be withdrawn. Although the next franchise operator could choose to use them on non-West Yorks routes if they chose.

Trivia - What about a TOC buying a new build and recovering their money and more back by leasing them to DaFT ? Would also by-pass the ROSCOs.

Bridgend CC own 2 143s, Cardiff CC own one.

The rest all appear to be Porterbrook owned, but FGW used to own a few that came with the Severn Beach line. I can only assume that they were sold back to Porterbrook at some point.

Would the original owners of the Severn Beach units not be one of the local authorities? Bristol or South Gloucestershire Councils perhaps? That would seem more likely than having to transfer ownership from W&W, to Wessex, to FGW...

I think the Class 155s that weren't split into Class 153s were owned by WYPTE (Metro) but I am not sure who owns them now.

Mentioned earlier in the thread. The 7 155s (and 10 class 144 MS vehicles) were sold to Porterbrook a few years back.

Not that I know of, they were part and parcel of the line. Whoever operated the line got the units gratis for as long as they operated the franchise. It may be that the 'ownership' was in fact the local council renting them off Porterbrook and making them available to the franchise runner.
