I was amused to hear that LOR are considering using one solitary class 315 unit for the Romford Upminster service when the rest of the units have been taken out of service. Why not use the restored class 306 unit once in a while?

AFAIK, it's no longer "restored", it's stationed at the East Anglian Railway Museum & is unlikely to be certified to work on (electrified) National Rail tracks. I suspect that there won't be many (any?) drivers with traction knowledge.
Hi, and welcome to the forum. Sounds like a nice idea but I would imagine amongst the reasons cited why this couldn't happen is that the same restrictions would probably apply to a heritage EMU as currently do to heritage DMUs regarding mainline operations sadly.
Spares will be easier to get for a 315, though I guess if it was in running condition a 306 wouldn't be as difficult to modify for service as many old units, already having sliding doors.
Well with so many electrified limes plus all those electric cars by 15 years and no new power stations .
Mrs May needs to reopen a rash of mines and give funding for a steam fleet just in case
