For the first time today, in many years of rail travel, I was on a train which overshot the station. I wouldn't have posted this as I have no wish to incur trouble for anyone, however the fact that the train was cancelled soon after, due to (according to RTT) "an issue with the traincrew" tells me that it's already fully known about.
So this was the 12.10 from Crewe to Milford Haven which my wife and I were leaving at Whitchurch, but as our coach entered the platform I said to Mrs Shrop "this isn't going to stop in time!". We stopped with just the last coach (of 5) in the platform, which did allow passengers to alight after passing through the train, and others to board, but a delay followed before it left and it was then cancelled at Shrewsbury.
Fortunately my elderly mother who had been with us, was able to continue to Church Stretton by boarding the Holyhead-Cardiff train after only a 20 minute wait at Shrewsbury, but this made me wonder what happened to the stock of the Milford Haven train.
I have no idea what caused the overshoot, whether it was slippery rails or a medical or something else, but my question is about the train units. Passengers from the 5 car MH train were apparently crammed in to the 3 car Cardiff train along with those who were already on board, with staff at Shrewsbury advising people that a further train would be due in another half an hour for anyone unable to board. But since both trains were 197s, with the MH train being rendered driverless (I imagine), and the stock doubtless required further south, why couldn't the stock have been attached to the Cardiff train at least until there, to put it into a better location for operational reasons AND provide much needed capacity for passengers?
Is this actually a lot harder to achieve than I think?
