Hi I'm trying to find out who's responsible for a road bridge over a railway line (Faircrouch Lane, Wadhurst, East Sussex). I haven't been able to see a plate on it. The reason for asking is that there's a planning application for a concrete crushing plant a couple of hundred feet away and I'm concerned that the bridge might not be strong enough for the volume and weight of HGV's and want to make sure that whoever is responsible for it is aware. Local rumour is that there used to be a weight limit sign on the bridge but there isn't one there now. It's just a small lane with single- track road in places.

Often depends on who was ther first, road or rail.

If a new road crosses an existing railway then I think it usually depends on whether the road goes over or under the railway.
For road over rail the bridge is usually designed and built by the road designer and contractor, and then maintained by the highway authority.
For road under rail the bridge is usually designed by or the railway's civil engineer or a design contractor employed by the railway, built in a separate contract from the road (possibly simultaneously and by the same contractor but with the railway as employer), charged to the road scheme, and then maintained by the railway.
For road over rail the bridge is usually designed and built by the road designer and contractor, and then maintained by the highway authority.
For road under rail the bridge is usually designed by or the railway's civil engineer or a design contractor employed by the railway, built in a separate contract from the road (possibly simultaneously and by the same contractor but with the railway as employer), charged to the road scheme, and then maintained by the railway.
From the data in this FOI request, the bridge appears to be TTH 38 FAIR CROUCH (that's ELR TTH, bridge ID 38 and bridge name "FAIR CROUCH") and is maintained by Network Rail.
Network Rail and the Highway Authority would share details of the bridge load strength (if known) if you asked for it.

The bridge should have a plate on it - It's TTH Bridge no 38, 39m 0094yds, local name "Fair Crouch".
Listed as a 3-span brick arch.
Owner: Network Rail, with an inspection history from NR contractors in CARRS.
It's not listed as having any weight restrictions in place, so should be fine.
