RNIB devices

Hi passing through Linlithgow station & noticed some new looking boxes on posts at the platform ends and near the exits. They have RNIB on them so presumably they are some sort of safety device for the blind. Any ideas exactly what they are for?

Are they RNIB REACT units? If so, I think they react to a user's key fob to provide spoken information.

From National Rail Enquiries Linlithgow station information:

RNIB REACT system - an audiable direction system for visually impaired is in operation. Fobs are required to activate the system.

When linked to real time information signs, it can provide information about which buses or train is coming in and when.

REACT phase 1 in Lisburn was launched in September 2011, linking Lisburn Bus Centre and Lisburn Square, to Bow Street Mall and the Housing Executive.
Phase 2, which includes a route to the train station, library, health centre and Southeastern Regional College has begun, with a number of new locations already active. It is hoped that work on the rest of the units will be completed soon.
