US actor Robin Williams found dead at home

US actor Robin Williams has been found dead, aged 63, in an apparent suicide, California police say.

Marin County Police said he was pronounced dead at his home shortly after officials responded to an emergency call around noon local time.

Williams was famous for films such as Good Morning Vietnam and Dead Poets Society and won an Oscar for his role in Good Will Hunting.

His publicist said he had been "battling severe depression".

A shame to hear about his suicide.

I liked many of his films including Mrs Doubtfire, Jumanji, Jack, Bicentennial Man, Dead Poets Society and Flubber to name not nearly enough.

Interestingly I was watching a video on YouTube at the weekend about Spike Milligan, one of my heroes, and his battles with depression. During that show it was kind of implied that most people have some form of a bi-polar side to their nature in that for every high you get an equivalent low. Spike was at times a very zany character and true enough suffered severe depression and contemplated suicide on more than one occasion. I remember thinking at that time, whilst watching the show, about Robin Williams and his comedy style and just wondering if after the immense highs he had achieved in his comedy, whether it be stand up or on the big screen, he could suffer an equivalent low. Never did I dare think that a couple of days later the news headlines would be what they were.

If this very sad news helps casts a light on the affects of depression on people, some of whom may not have anyone to turn to or think they have simply reached the end of their tether then I hope some good can come of it.

He was in the early stages of Parkinson's so that might explain why he killed himself.
