Another sad loss in 2016 is actress Liz Smith, who has died at the age of 95.

The first time that I remember seeing Liz Smith was playing the part of Annie Brandon in the comedy series "I didn't know you cared" which was set in South Yorkshire in the 1970's time period, in which Robin Bailey played Uncle Mort.

Liz was the recipient of an MBE.

Her speciality was dotty old ladies such as Nana in The Royle Family

She was also in the earlier Vicar of Dibley series where she played a character who produced some unusual baking recipes e.g. one where she offered the vicar a slice of brown cake which the vicar accepted saying "Oh Chocolate" and took a bite, to which she replied "No. Marmite."

Although probably best-known for comedy dramas such as I didn't Know You Cared she also appeared in films such as Haunted, with Aiden Quinn and Kate Beckinsale - she played an old gypsy woman who realised that the Kate Beckinsale character was in fact a ghost!

My first memory of her too - her husband in this was John Comer, who played Sid the café owner in 'Last of the Summer Wine'. Written by the totally mad Peter Tinniswood, so at least two mad people were connected with the series!

That man had so much appeal to the opposite sex - my wife says I've done my best sartorially to mimic him, but (sadly) the women don't come flocking!
