Riley Class 37 markings

On the front of November's Railways Illustrated there's a photo of an Ian Riley-liveried 37518. I've just noticed that under the red lights and above the buffer on each side at the front there's a little black star.
Is there any reason for this? I wondered if it was something to do with multiple working but I don't know why there'd be one each side if it was the case.

They’re actually blue stars, and, yes, they denote the multiple working system used by class 37s.
