I want to travel next week on a day return from Richmond (London) to Marlow and am researching tickets.

The cheapest is going via Windsor & Eton with loads of changes and a long journey time.

Going via Waterloo and Paddington comes up on all the search engines, but will take over two hours each way.

I've found the following fare on brfares.com: http://www.brfares.com/#faredetail?orig=RMD&dest=MLW&rlc=DIS&rte=811&tkt=CDR
The route shows as "EALING CM/W ACTN", which are both Underground stations, presumably changing at Ealing Broadway. This seems to offer the best combination of journey time and cost. However I can't get it to appear on any journey planner and even brfares.com doesn't make it clear that the ticket would be valid on the Underground.

Does anyone have any experience or advice about this ticket?

How about a split? The travel card area extends as far as West Drayton, so that's £ 8.90 plus £ 8.10 for the West Drayton to Marlow return at off peak prices without Railcards. Almost all trains from Ealing Broadway to Maidenhead stop at West Drayton. There may also be a direct bus from Richmond to Ealing Broadway.

The ticket you found looks cheaper, if you can find a way to buy it.

The Turnham Green District Line route comes up on the TfL site taking around 90 minutes, but only suggests tickets onwards from Ealing Broadway.

The Ealing Common/West Acton ticket is valid on the Underground. It isn't valid Via London however. Changing at Ealing Broadway is indeed correct to get to/from Maidenhead.

It's not a ticket I commonly sell on the branch however. Most people seem to opt for the route Via Windsor. I think the thought of using the Underground just puts people off for some reason.

There are a few tickets to Underground zones with the same route from Great Western stations, and it's similar to tickets routed via Northolt Underground for stations off the Chiltern line (which I have used beforehand).

Route 65 runs between Richmond and Ealing Broadway direct, running 24 hours a day operated by London United, so buy the travelcard at Richmond, then jump on that to Ealing Broadway, then travel via West Drayton with your Marlow extension being purchased at Ealing Broadway, or try and contact the guard on your FGW train.

Guards are only on the Maidenhead to Marlow stretch. I would advise purchasing your ticket before boarding the Ealing Broadway to Maidenhead part as it is DOO and you would more likely to get a PF rather than a ticket.
