Hamburg is pretty good for loco hauled, are you planning to get a Schleswig-Holstein ticket or a Lower Saxony ticket?
If the latter, every Metronome train is a Traxx loco with Dostos.

RE/RB trains towards Lübeck and Bad Oldesloe are also loco hauled with Dostos

I shall probably be staying local as I arrive at 22:25, hotel hopefully by 00:30 (staying reasonably central) then i'll likely have about 06:00 to 16:00 for bashing before the 18:35 flight back to Manchester.
The loco hauled information is however much appreciated!

28-29/10/17- A bit of everything

Yesterday evening, I was set to meet a friend in Leeds for a concert at 1600, and figured that I may as well fill my day beforehand a little. Wanting to do things on the cheap, I snagged myself a £4.50 advance over to Manchester on the 0511 Airport service (keen to avoid anything after the 0711 as services were being extended to Newcastle and were all to be utterly rammed, but also not enough of a masochist to use the 0325/0345 again...until my all night Cologne bash in a few weeks a la £19 Ryanair ;) ) followed by £3.30 on the 1416 Victoria to Leeds. This gave me eight or so hours to play with, and I hatched a quick plan to knock out some shacks in Greater Manchester, mainly in the western area (I will do Hazel Grove, Hadfield, Dinting and Glossop one day…) before collecting everything up after I got back from an evening bashing in South Yorkshire (not much to write home about, other than the shacks from Sheffield to Kiveton Park along with Thorne North being knocked out, plus 399203) and hoping i’d actually sleep a bit as my flatmates were off on a night out.

I predictably only had 3 hours sleep before my alarm was going off at 0410, with me making myself a coffee and noting everyone else still awake from the previous night  I was however feeling pretty chirpy (I’ve had a cold for seemingly forever so I ended up sleeping most of Thursday) and made the 20 minute walk to the station down Portobello Street, across West Street and past Hallam University onto Platform 7 for 185113 to Manchester Piccadilly. Predictably, an unreserved table was easily sourced and I noted the very very smiley guard as we ran non-stop via New Mills, arriving in at 0601, 2 minutes early. Down to the trams, and my £8.90 was handed over for an all-modes day ticket (you’ll soon see why!) before 3043 hopped me along to Piccadilly Gardens as a filler, followed by the happy sight of winner 3039 to Victoria, giving me plenty time to watch the ECS for the 0638 to Wigan NW arrive, with me joining 150119 to shack 1, the very very dark and rainy Kearsley. I keep forgetting that this station wasn’t touched during the Farnworth works, unlike the evil Farnworth and Moses Gate with their daft ramps and steps going in random directions.

It was a short wait until 142049/142092 plopped me along one stop, of course the famous shack 2, Clifton. There was method in the madness of a 0511 start! I then had a 20 minute walk ahead of me into Pendlebury (I could have walked to Swinton but I wanted to be at Deansgate), avoiding the route Google Maps suggested and sticking to the main road (it sends you through a park which was absolutely pitch black at this hour) before arriving at the bus stop for 0726, ready for the 0734 Route 8, which turned up spot on time surprisingly, in the form of a decent enough Enviro 400. Arrival a few minutes walk from Deansgate was at 0802, giving me enough time to visit Sainsbury’s for a quick supply raid and head to the platform for 150142/156452, with me sitting in the “refurbished” 150 for the run to shack 3, Flixton. I was also out this early as Saturday morning has a sort of ‘peak’ service making it easy to get in all the shacks east of Irlam, though I have had Trafford Park already which actually worked out quite well. I did however have to jog in places to make it back to shack 4, Chassen Road, in time for 156429 for the leap to shack 5, Urmston.

This seemed like a pleasant area with an impressive looking pub on the platform, though it wasn’t long until 150211/142064 came along to take me non-stop to shack 6, Irlam. This was another station with a cafe type place on the platform, though bizarrely with Jehovah’s Witnesses outside, which put me off having much of a look. 156423 was then my final move on the line, to shack 7, Humphrey Park. I could have jumped back on 156429 to Urmston, and back again on the 142/150 combo, but that was boring, and I had a pass for everything! I made the walk to the main road (about 10 minutes away) for a Route 15 to Stretford Metrolink (only about 3 stops) and was rewarded with winner 3035 in tandem with dud 3046 to Trafford Bar. As I had some time to kill, I was now just looking for some red pen action in my spare 20 minutes. Sadly it was an unrequired 3079 to Cornbrook, but after letting a few services go, winner 3100 turned up to take me along to Deansgate-Castlefield.

Originally my plan had been to catch the TPE to Wigan North Western, but this was cancelled, so I had to get a shift on and take 156424/156459 to what was meant to be Bolton, but a later connection at Moses Gate was running very very late and I didn’t feel like wrecking my later plans so I bailed at Salford Crescent and took 156482 on a Southport service, deciding to bail at Hindley just to see whether the Kirkby train had either of my final Northern DMUs on. Sadly not, as it was 142028/142052 along to Wigan Wallgate where I walked over to North Western and joined 319374 to shack 8, Bryn. For some reason there was a decent +6 here today on the xx03 service off Wigan, whereas it’s normally a hard zero connection most of the day! No complaints though as I jumped off, noticed the shiny looking platforms, and hopped back on 319367 to Wigan, arriving 6E at 1123.

Now, i’d been monitoring the very very late connection I was meant to have had at Moses Gate, and for some daft reason, instead of turning it at Bolton (it’s fast from Bolton to Wigan anyway), they made it skip Kearsley, Farnworth and Moses Gate (lucky I didn’t go for Moses Gate then!) and continued it to Wigan, arriving 1129 (when it’s due to leave at 1124, so i’d already made a usual -6 connection), shunting around and leaving at 1139, 15 minutes late, 150268 being in charge. This gave me a -9 at Moses Gate, so I accepted that if I was to go for it, i’d get a bus back to Bolton. Next thing I know, we’re skipping Hindley and Westhoughton, clawing us back to 11L! This gave me a -5, so slightly better now! Oh, and the service back to Bolton was 7L. So I had a +2 provided that everything maintained a fine and intricate balance, luck very much being on my side as this was a connection I shouldn’t have made at Wigan anyway. Somehow I was able to dive off at shack 9, Moses Gate, run around the daft step/ramp combination and head onto the platform in time for 142047 back to Bolton!

The ex-Blackburn was late, so I ended up taking that, in the form of 142012, down to Salford Crescent. This was indeed a sensible move as the following 150135 was full and standing around to Oxford Road, while i’d had a seat on the 142! A leap of faith was had on the EMT to Nottingham as far as Piccadilly, somehow paying off with winner 158854. Just 158773, 158785 and 158806 to go for the EMT 158s then! I then figured I needed to get to Stockport ASAP on something else in order to deckchair there for a winner back. This meant taking dud 390155 (I could have stuck with the 158 but it was majorly full and standing) along there, with me spending around 20 minutes sat around in the waiting room before I hit lucky with winner 390129 on the late running 1317 back to Manchester.

I still had a little time left, so I jumped on winner 3108 around to Piccadilly Gardens, though it was duds 3019 and 3056/3027 to St Peter’s Square and Market Street respectively. Rewards did eventually come my way though, as winner 3065 was taken to Shudehill, with winner 3018 coming a short while later for Victoria.

Victoria was a bit all over the place though, with my service being delayed inbound due to slippery rails, so come 1427, it was unamusing to see 142091/150206 rock up instead of a lovely 158! I ended up in the 142 as the 150 was rammed, but come Bradford Interchange I moved and stood up in the now quieter (basically just all seats taken) 150 to wake myself up a bit before meeting my friend and having a lovely night at a gig before she kindly let me stay in her flat for the night, so 185137 was taken on a lively 2316 service to York, headcode 1T95 unusually, due to it starting at Leeds owing to Leeds-Stalybridge being shut. (Resulting in a weird Stalybridge to Warrington service running as well) with a 2347 arrival as we followed in the late running ex Blackpool, noting the 155+155 combination in Platform 7 which i’m sure formed off the 1916 Victoria-York. A swift pint then followed before getting back to Heslington for around 0100.

---

This morning was a fairly sedate affair, as we both headed into York for breakfast before I joined the late running 1141 to Plymouth, due to 1E08 getting friendly with a plastic bag (and ending up 90L in the process) but I thankfully had a seat reserved on the packed service formed of 43285/43357 so thank god we didn’t have a Voyager subbing as well! I then decided I didn’t want to finish quite yet and worked out I could intercept an HST at Chesterfield fairly sharp, so £3.50 was handed over for a return and I headed for the 1343 to Leicester, which happily threw out winner 222015 with dud 222011 for the run south, followed by a +15 for the returning HST. Smiles all around as it was winner 43043 with dud 43064 back, complete with declassified Coach D sandwiched in, completely empty too. Nice end to a lovely weekend, with 10 winners for haulage in the books and another 9 shacks.

That was an incredibly busy couple of days! Nice work on the more difficult shacks, which I need nearly all of in that collection. Luck was sure on your side in places!

£19, was that for both directions? If so that Ryanair flight is a bargain! Really looking forward to the read on that it must be said!

Sounds like a productive day in Manchester.

Liking the visit to my local shack.
I saw that Meridian pair yesterday, and I had that HST set as well. Though it wasn't obvious D was declassified so I didn't use it.

It was indeed, £9.99 each way. Going to be extra cheap as the flight there arrives at 10:40 and I leave at 06:45 the next morning so i'm going to just do the U-Bahn all night and get an S-Bahn to the Airport for around 04:30, arriving back home about 10:00 and likely sleeping all day!

When I do Berlin in January, that was the luxury of £12.99 each way.

I didn't go all the way to Leicester  And indeed it wasn't but the three first class carriages were all in their right place so it would be daft to insert a fourth.

I could have probably got away with it, but if an RPI came round, then my only argument is that it was in the wrong place.

I think the general rule when EMT have a HST set with a randomly placed 1st class coach sandwiched between standard class coaches is that it becomes a standard class coach, similar to GWR when they have to use a 1st class coach in one of their sets as standard class.

Some more great reading there Richard, plenty winners in the bank, especially the EMT zings. The life as a student seems to be suiting you well. Plenty sleep, birds n gigs, good on you lad. Incidentally who did you go to see?

Dodie Clark who is a very acoustic and soft sorta musician, big on messages about mental health and the sort. I'm going to see some heavier stuff next month though!

Indeed uni life is getting the balance just about right, i'm drinking and going out less than most but still getting my fix.

Wow you really did get some bargain flights! I couldn't do U-Bahn all night though, I'd guess it's like Night Tube bashing except being in a foreign land, I'd not be willing to do it myself! Even so, it sounds like a beast of s trip and I am jealous!

Very much glad to see that you're bouncing back now that you're at Uni and still managing to get out only the rails every so often. Good choice in music too, I do like Dodie's stuff

Lucky with the cheap flights, I'm hoping to go to Berlin around Easter time, the cheapest flights I can see is £60 with easyJet.
Ryanair don't really fly from Gatwick, and Stansted is a huge trek.

Not from home, I don't.
Anyway I don't think it runs early enough to get me there at 4:30am
Good point - I was thinking of Leicester.

0430?! You'd be better off getting the latest possible train to London and then to Stansted and overnight at the terminal!

All-nighting at an airport is not fun. Did it once at Manchester and it gets really dull, really fast! The flights to Berlin will be expensive around Easter time, as you'll find plenty of people take to the skies around that time. rg177 has clearly booked his flights at quiet times hence the bargain fares!

Agreed that it probably wouldn't be fun but if you can find a comfy seat to get some kip then dad says it's alright (he's done it before). Definitely go for the flights off season - it'll be so much more expensive when everyone's going thanks to the school holidays etc.

I'm planning the 4th of April which is the Wednesday after Easter Sunday.
I'm sort of planning it around my free time.
January's cheap but I'm busy then.
Had a look and FR is more expensive than EZY for the same dates.

Indeed these are ultra cheap times. Germany's prices have a surge from the start of December because of the Christmas markets then dip again around January.

I'm hoping to fit in something cheap around April outside of the Easter Holidays.

Maybe a cheeky Benelux pass too...

Wayfarer insanity- 08/11/17

With a remaining RTV needing use, I threw together a quick plan to knock out some Manchester Wayfarer area shacks, before realising it was Northern strike day after i’d booked it  In the end though, I persisted and worked out that in some cases, there was actually a better service for some stations!

Alarm was off at 0510, and I made myself a coffee before walking down for the 0611 to Manchester Airport, this time with 185109 at the helm, and it being well loaded for the run over the dark Hope Valley to Stockport, arrival being at 0654 and seeing me pop down to the ticket office, hand over £2+voucher for the Wayfarer, and go outside for the bus because of course it’s not valid until 0930 on trains! I was meant to catch the 0712 Route 393, and wandered to the Grand Central stop, before having concerns as the bus simply didn’t turn up, and I couldn’t even catch the next one as there wasn’t one! Eventually, at 0726, Optare Solo SR 282 operated by High Peak appeared with a steamed up display appeared and my ticket was accepted without a fuss. The trundle down through the rush hour began, before we hit the main road towards Poynton, and eventually Adlington, where I hopped off and noted that this was actually the only bus of the day to go anywhere near Adlington station!

It was a short walk to shack 1, Adlington (Cheshire) where the first service of the day, formed of 323224 arrived, complete with temporary guard in an orange puffa. Bizarrely, revenue was better than usual as all services came with a dedicated ticket examiner, so I handed over £5.30 for a return from Prestbury to Bramhall (non-railcard fare here, damn minimum fare!) and jumped off at the charming shack 2, Poynton. The temporary guard was clearly very sloppy and not quite used to usual protocol as he locked the doors, shut his cab door, brakes released, then he gets out again and re-releases the doors for a straggler, delaying departure when the next service was 12 minutes behind! I took a seat in the charming waiting room before 323239 rocked up on a quieter relief service, complete with a temporary guard who almost fell into the cab door as she opened it  This was taken along to shack 3, Bramhall, where I had a 30 minute wait in the cold, so I came up with a plan to do something more interesting and cover some good area. It’d involve three consecutive bus moves, but my plan was all set!

323224 returned to take me to shack 4, the poshest Prestbury, where I headed to the Co-Op for breakfast and noted the vast amounts of Mercs constantly trying to knock me over  It was then a return for the Route 19 to Macclesfield, formed of another Optare Solo SR, which is a half hour long trundle down residential streets, though for some reason it makes it halfway down one then does a three point turn! Arrival was at 1002 and I had a 15 minute wait for the next service. Imagine the look on my face TWENTY FIVE minutes later, as 282 reappeared, still late, with the same driver, working Route 58 to Buxton! It was however a thoroughly lovely run through the moors (short but sweet too) with a view of the Peaks before I was dumped at Buxton Market Place for about 1100, just in time for the 1105 Route 199 as far as Dove Holes, this time a pretty shaky ‘04 Reg Wright Eclipse, with the driver snatching my ticket saying ‘what the hell is that?’ before shoving it back. Seems it was his unique brand of customer service.

It was a 5 minute walk (noting the evil platform change) to the platform for 150145/150206 as far as shack 6, Chapel-en-le-Frith. I’d planned a lovely relaxed connection onto the next 199 here, but the bloody station was 15 minutes from the bus stop so that turned into a jog before I ended up waiting 10 minutes anyway for the delayed bus, having my ticket forensically examined again before the stagger to Furness Vale, having to spend 5 minutes at a stand because someone had decided to stand on the A6 cutting down trees. Thankfully I had just enough to get to the platform at shack 7, Furness Vale, and join 150218/150224 to shack 8, Whaley Bridge. Mr Temporary Guard on this service wasn’t exactly my best pal as he proceeded to swing the inner cab door open as I was leaning slightly into the aisle, and I had to dodge getting whacked in the head! I was also trying to work out how to get New Mills Newtown and Hazel Grove in without a massive wait but was stumped so just went outside to source some lunch. That was, until a little white Optare Solo on the 60A to New Mills appeared outta nowhere. That solves that issue!

I had a good few minutes to spare at shack 8, New Mills Newtown, until 156429/156444 rocked up for the run to shack 9, Hazel Grove, with the guard being some random woman in a cardigan. The ticket examiner was also blatantly office staff as her customer service skills were a bit limited  I jumped off at Hazel Grove and walked to the main road, not having long to wait until joining the famous Route 192 to Stockport (Northern had a daft service interval from Hazel, xx08 DMU from Buxton then xx50 EMU all stations), famous for having an endless number of buses an hour and an endless stream of passengers for the 20 minute run back to where i’d started this morning, before I was rewarded with winner 390045 into Piccadilly from Stockport. Next move was a bit weird, as winner 175003 was taken to shack 10, Patricroft, despite there being the usual Northern service off peak! However, some other bloke had seemingly caught on as he alighted with me, though I stayed to join 319448 to Earlestown as a time killer until the 67 hauled service, before 175115 back to Newton-Le-Willows. I now had so long, I ended up strolling back to Earlestown, getting 319362 back to Newton again (the guard being a driver team leader) then 158835 to Earlestown for a third time.

Imagine the screams when 175110 came rumbling around the corner instead of a DVT! I was however somewhat forgiving as the unit was required, leaving just 1 to clear the 175/1s. It was a fast run straight to Piccadilly, where the unit hunt resumed and winner 390148 was taken to Stockport for 175114 back, sadly one digit off my last required 175/1! This was a well calculated filler move until the 1618 to Hadfield, formed of 323226. I had my eye on Dinting and Glossop, and that was looking difficult as the dispatch from the guard was very slow and sloppy meaning that time was lost at every single station, meaning that on arrival at shack 11, Glossop, I had to run. It was a bit of a dodgy walk to do in fading light as it took me down some unlit and muddy tracks, but I survived, and was soon back at shack 12, Dinting, ready to join the 323 back to Manchester for 1741. I had a quick scan of the platforms, and noted winner 390138 on the 1755 to London, so that was duly roped in before a very tight running connection to platform 3 saw me smiling at the sight of winner 175104 coming in, my final 175/1 and leaving 3 to clear the class. On arrival back into Piccadilly, I figured that with the next 390 being dud, I may as well hop on 220016 back to Stockport so I could be in with a better chance of a winner presenting itself.

The next 390 at Stockport was indeed a winner, but it was 11 late, so had I joined it, it would break the connection with anything to Stockport for a good 30 minutes, so I had a cunning plan. Let it go, get the next one (which was a mere 6L), then join this 390 back to Stockport. It worked particularly well as winner 390117 appeared for the run back to Piccadilly where I grabbed a few shots of the new livery winner 390006 before taking it out to Stockport. Sadly, the winning run of 390s halted as it was 390042 taking me back to Manchester where I decided to stop looking at Stockport and nipped downstairs for a tram, winner 3067 obliging to Piccadilly Gardens where I went to Tesco for some evening supplies before 3011 returned me back. I’d now calculated that the 2039 Oxford Road-Notts should be 158785, one of my last EMT 158s, so I hung around and screamed at the sight of 350407 taking me to Oxford Road, as i’ve only had 4 of the blighters but I hit the same ones every single time! The 158 also happened to be late, so I had the chance to eventually stop getting dud TPE 350s as winner 350401 turned up to take me back to Piccadilly. Back to Oxford Road once more, this time on a very long formation of 156427/156483/156487 which promptly failed on arrival at Oxford Road for half an hour and blocked the line

I however was rubbing my hands in anticipation of the 158s coming the other way, and let out a groan as 158812/158866 rolled in instead. Gits. The other diagrams that followed (2137 Liv-Notts and the late night ECS) were 158813 and 158847, so it seems that 785 had been swapped out at Nottingham. With options now thin on the ground (No Northern services at all now), I jumped on fresh dud 390148 to shack 13, Macclesfield, clearing the line from Manchester to Stoke. It was a nice, longer run giving me a chance to eat and put my feet up for half an hour or so before we arrived, and I was rewarded with winner 390151 back to Stockport, dropping back onto the ATW service in hope of a winner but also not as 175006 took me back to Piccadilly.

One final attempt at a Stockport leap was had, and there was success as winner 158832 turned up on the 2236 to Shrewsbury (being a strike special calling at all stations Stockport to Shrewsbury except Cheadle, Handforth, Chelford and Goostrey). 390047 then returned me, having some very shiny internal screens in the vestibule of Coaches B to C and a different type of screen on the outside doors. One last Oxford Road leap produced no luck with 158818 out and 350409 back, so I took a pew for the 10 minute wait on Platform 9 for the 2350 to Sheffield via Crofton and Tinsley. 185112/185140 were in charge tonight, and it was a very sluggish run behind 6E27 all the way from Stalybridge to Wakefield before we roared our way via Rotherham and I scored the track via Tinsley (eventually!) before an arrival time of 0132, 9 minutes late. I was back in my flat for about 0155, and suffice to say, I was a bit tired!

Good day overall, limited by the lack of Northern service but clearing Hadfield, Buxton, Stoke and Chat Moss for shacks isn’t bad going.

Winners- 12+13 shacks

That was some day. Quite eventful and nice to see a cardigan wearing guard too...

Another cracking read there Richard. Bloody long day, all the bustitutions would've driven me bonkers and I'd have easily got lost.
Even if the 175 was a winner, a little consolation, I'd have still cried when one turned.up instead of the skip.
Really shocked the TPE 350s haven't fell for you, with your red pens all over your book, I thought they d have fell yonks ago. Still there's plenty time with them, they're not gonna go in a hurry really are they.

By gum that was a long but clearly very good day! You must be well pleased at the results, I would be!

Bizarrely it didn't catch up with me until Friday morning where that 08:20 alarm for a 09:00 lecture turned into my eyes opening at 09:09 in horror  Very pleased though, except with that bloody 67 eluding me!

Pretty exhausting but indeed, odd to see the casual wear as some of the drafted in staff were in their best suits!

Google Maps kept me on track and I don't mind a good bus move if it's scenic and the vehicle is comfortable enough.

Indeed the 67 not showing up hacked me off a bit as that's the 2nd time it's happened. Though last time, the git was replaced by a 2 car 175 and I was going all the way from Manchester to Prestatyn!

I've done plenty TPE 350 moves but they seem to be falling at the rate of around 1 per year (I'm sure the last one I scored was 350410 and that was 2016!) for some reason. Only had 401-2, 404, 407, 409 and 410.

You need to go and actually hunt the infernal things down, before we happily take them off the North and use them better in the Midlands, which is what I did yonks ago. Couldn't possibly have been because they were my last two in the class to get mind...The 67 failing to produce would have annoyed me too, but I like 175s so it wouldn't have been too bad. Mind you, when I went on Cardiff on Friday I specially arranged our travel (yes I had company!) to have the 67 to Newport, where I also arranged a short fester for 800s which just had to be done. I've even had my first dud 800 already!

Ouch to missing that lecture though! For cripes sake don't do what I did and put trains first!
