Apart from the 3 problems on day 10 it sounds like a great time. Score with the vending machine too but KFC?! That's just foul! You must have some good mileage off 57603 now too!

About 1205 miles off that particular loco with 245mi 15ch off 57605.

That makes something like 1450 miles off of 57s

About 1310 miles off HSTs as well over the fortnight.

ALR- Days 12/13/14/technically 15- 01-04/09/16

I remember literally nothing of the journey to London, waking up to Ealing Broadway and gathering my stuff up before jumping off at around 0505, stopping by at McDonald’s for a McMuffin and heading straight for the tube. Today was a rather sad day as it was my last proper bash day of the Rover. Here’s a quick summary of Day 13 and 14 to prove that it was put to good use though!

On Day 13, I caught the 0757 HST to York, in order to meet my girlfriend off the 0901 arrival from Bradford, and we ended up sitting the waiting room before the 1003 to London was boarding. I’d actually booked extra first class advances for this, so it was breakfast service for us, before arriving into Kings Cross and nipping on the tube to Waterloo. Dud 458513 was the haulage to a winner shack at Brentford where our hotel was situated, before winner 458503 was taken over to Waterloo later on, where we dined at Da Mario, a cosy little Italian place in Covent Garden. The return was on winner 458520 where we retired for the evening. The next day, day number 14, it was the 0658 to Waterloo which was dud 458536 as far as Clapham, where winner 377137 was taken into Victoria so we could drop our bags at the handy left luggage at the coach station. Over to the tube, then it was winners 377215/377501 to Brighton, where we had a pretty nice day exploring the place and trying out the British Airways i360 thing, which gave some pretty marvellous views out over the coast. Winners 377130/377418 were the haulage back to East Croydon, with a swap being made onto dud 377427 to Victoria, where the bags were collected once more, before heading for Kings Cross and having a spot of dinner in the Parcel Yard. We took the 1930 91 hauled service back up to Leeds, where I had the fun of the 2212 service to York, changing onto the 2256 to Newcastle for around 0005. Indeed, I crossed very slightly into day 15!

Back to the present and I was jumping on the tube heading for Victoria. Today was the day to blitz Southeastern. First up this morning was winner 375710 on what I think was something like the 0547 to Ramsgate, and this was taken as far as shack 1, Sole Street. Morning peak was also kicking off nicely, so plenty of chances to be scoring this morning. Double winners 465924/466032 were then taken back down to shack 2, Farningham Road, where I accidentally delayed departure because the guard was highly concerned by me taking a photo of the train, not dispatching until I reassured him many times that I was fine and didn’t want to board  A quick hop over the footbridge then saw me take winner 465035 to shack 3, Meopham. This train was headed on a 2hr+ adventure to Dover, so I don’t envy anyone who was taking a particularly long journey as the train was knackered! Winner 465911 leading dud 466012 was then next up for the journey to shack 4, Swanley, where I decided to swap lines and focus on a few shacks via Maidstone East.

Winner 319370 trailing dud 319443 pulled in next, so it was duly taken to shack 5, Otford, where I had a short wait for the service behind. Winners 375612/375803 were taken to shack 6, Borough Green and Wrotham, just as the peak was reaching its busiest, and indeed winner 377208 leading dud 377507 proved to be rather cosy for the hop back to the very peaceful shack 7, Kemsing. By the time I bailed, winner 465917 leading dud 466006 was already on the horizon, and it was a very short pause until I boarded and took them along to shack 8, East Malling. This was a rather painful walk between platforms as some workers were drilling holes in the road, so I went as far up the platform as I could which proved to be more effort than it was worth as winner 465906 then proceeded to turn up on its own for the 1 mile hop back to shack 9, West Malling. There was a bit of a fester here as the sun was breaking through in order to await winners 375814/375908 which were taken through to Ashford International, shack 10, as I’d had enough of shack hopping for the time being.

I had actually intended to jump back and go via Headcorn, scooping up some shacks there, but being spontaneous got the better of me, and on seeing a real live Marshlink service ready to depart and not in the form of a bus, I hopped on. It was winner 171726 for the pleasant run along to Hastings, which was shack number 11. This was as far as I’d be going on Southern, apart from a nice move on the sole 313 working along this way of the day, sadly a dud 313206, but it made for a nice hop to get in shack 12, St Leonards Warrior Square. I could see my 375 pair in the tunnels waiting to leave Hastings, and soon enough winners 375606/375625 were joined. It was here that alarm bells started to ring. One of the inbounds was cancelled as we progressed up the line, and it seemed that the entire line had fallen over into London Bridge. However, I bailed at shack 13, High Brooms, thanks to this at the moment handy delay, and onto winners 465903/465922 leading a dud 466010 back to Tunbridge Wells. Some serious evaluation was now required as the service was falling apart, and my service was announced as terminating at Blackfriars.

Quite a few trains were getting pulled, but I had one last chance to get out and still get another shack on the mainline. The trio of Networkers were taken back to shack 14, Hildenborough, where I had something like a +25 in the sunshine awaiting the delayed Tunbridge Wells service. The next London service had been pulled too, much to the bemusement of a passenger who had just missed the train I’d bailed on! Winners 465905/465918 leading dud 466019 were taken back down to Tonbridge, where I abandoned any shacks to get on the Headcorn line, instead catching winners 375618/375829 straight through to Ashford International. My next focus was polishing off the shacks from Strood to Faversham (except Teynham) and getting in the Maidstone West Line. I made a very tight connection (originally a +15 or so) onto winner 395009 up for the thrilling blast on HS1 to Ebbsfleet International, changing onto dud 395029 for shack 15, Rochester. Nice move here, as winners 465926/465931 were filing in behind for the tiny hop to shack 16, Chatham.

I had one more shack to get on the Chatham Mainline, and winner 375911 did the honours for the run to shack 17, Longfield. It was a nice short wait here as I wait a minus connection onto winner 375705 up to Rochester, and a further very tight connection onto dud 395007 to Strood. And again, I then made a +2 onto winner 375308, placing me one service ahead on the Maidstone West line, and on a Maidstone West terminator when I needed a Tonbridge one. Of course, that was actually very convenient, as I bailed at the rather dull shack 18, Maidstone Barracks and waited for the 375 to shuttle up and down before taking it to shack 19, New Hythe. This was a rather unusual shack, as every other one on the line seemed to have very short platforms (the standard service is a 3*375 or a 2*466) so I assume that the peak only 395 makes a call here as the platforms seemed to extend much further than usual! Winner 375304 then made an appearance, and it was time to go right through past Maidstone, and on the very very pleasant line via Beltring, which provided some very nice scenery in the sunshine before I jumped off at shack 20, Paddock Wood.

I was in desperate need of food, having not ate since 10ish, and grabbed two pasties to sustain me before joining double winners 375806/375828 and dud 375630 to Sevenoaks, as I deemed it too early to be leaving for London just yet. The only real possible move out of here was up the line via Otford, so I joined winners 319001/319426 and had a bit of a period of reflection as I stood by the doors on an empty, hot 001 in its essentially original yellow clad guise. I’d miss waking up behind a 57, the early starts in London, the thousands of miles being racked up. It was only a short move though, as I jumped off at the amusingly named shack 21, Bat and Ball. Nice move here, as shortly after, winners 387113/387128 were taken back to Sevenoaks. One last 375 move for the rover, and that was winners 375605/375807 with dud 375701 to London Waterloo East. I had a nice while yet so no need to be rushing, as I bailed here and took an evening walk in the sunshine along to Blackfriars, where dud 319445 was just arriving. I hopped on, but we didn’t move. Indeed, it was 15 minutes until we moved due to a failed train, and then the fun was just beginning. Bear in mind that this was a single 319 in the peak! We arrived at City Thameslink where we filled to about comfortable full and standing, but then passengers ignored the pleas of the station staff not to board and to get the next service (now literally just behind) for St Albans. One bloke was having none of it, ramming himself on and elbowing me in the side. ‘I don’t think so mate’ I said, nudging him back onto the platform

I was firmly wedged against the door for the hop into St Pancras (as in, my cheek was pressed into the glass!) where I picked up some food, and made the 1830 to Newcastle, which had dud 91124 hauling tonight. I found myself a pair of seats for the journey north, arriving back into Newcastle at 2137.

And that’s where the bashing really concluded. This ALR was never meant to 14 days flat out of half killing myself on the rails, despite what using the 0032 Exeter St Thomas-St Davids and the 0106 to Paddington might suggest, the six nights on the sleepers, the blitzing of winners and shacks, no no. It was about the experience, it was about spending two weeks doing something that I loved, hence the healthy balance between the sightseeing in London, the nights spent up the Shard, in cosy restaurants, walking through cities in the dead of night, secretly plotting deaths of irritating fellow sleeper passengers, sunrises and sunsets all over the country, and of course, the trains, all 281 journeys, 7618 miles of travel and hundreds of winners and shacks to boot. And I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

Okay, MAYBE I wouldn’t go back to Sheerness

Physically, that would have been impossible. I slept in on day 9 because a day which simply involved a chill day in Richmond Park and a journey back from London tipped me over the edge and brought me to the point of sheer exhaustion. I needed a few gaps, a few nights in actual beds, a few returns home, in order to keep me going. What I failed to mention was that I fell asleep on just about every 375 I used on day 12, as the air conditioning was about the right temperature to knock me out  And on day 11, had I not been woken up by the gent on the Exeter i'd have ended up in Plymouth stranded overnight. I was pushing the boundaries far enough.

From a cost point of view, not possible too. I'd have needed to do sleepers in cabins or i'd have needed hotels in order to keep the pace going. I spent something like £600 just on myself, including food, tickets, etc. on the trip, and a further £250 or so on the two weekends away with my girlfriend. All in all, in order to make the entire summer happen, I burned through nearly £1800 of savings and wasn't in a position to be getting through even more.

From an emotional point of view, I only see my girlfriend every once every two weeks normally, so the chance to be able to treat her to a couple of weekends away without having to worry about my own rail travel costs was something that I wasn't going to pass up. She loved it too, and without a doubt i'd probably do an ALR that way again. It was 9 days flat out bashing and 2+2+1/2+1/2 days meeting some lovely new people, and being a 17 year old spending some quality time with his better half

You'll probably understand where i'm coming from better in a couple of years too, as i'd have probably shared your attitude in days gone by.

Having returned from 7 day ALRs looking like something from the Walking Dead, I think you got the balance spot on.

Glad you really enjoyed your ALR, and that the missus was kept happy as well. Same again next year?

I think now that we've been together a fair while and have had the chance to organise things for next year, it's looking like Paris and Tenerife for our adventures rather than piggybacking an ALR. In fact, definitely Paris as the hotel and flights have been paid for  (I did look at Eurostar but the travel time going through by train from Newcastle is hefty, when I did it with the parents it was Newcastle 1000d-London Kings Cross/St Pancras 1244a/1531d-Paris Nord 1847a)

I'll probably end up doing some cheap hotel based moves in the interim rather than massively long bashes that wind up with me returning home. And of course, university is either going to take me to Leeds, Sheffield or Nottingham as of September so bashing will be greatly helped by any of those!

That said, I still have three reports from after the ALR (A 2 day London bash and last Saturday's NET bash) to get through, so plenty to be getting on with reporting.

I know how you feel about an ALR bash costing a fortune. I spent about £1,100 all in on my 14 day ALR in 2012. That was with several hotel nights, including an additional one booked during the trip, as well as food, drink etc. For two weeks of heaven, that was money exceptionally well spent in my eyes and I'd spend it again happily if I had it!

Looks like you got the balance pretty good with bashing and treating the other half to trips away, and aye I suspect when FQ gets older he'll appreciate your point of view on this. Must be hard being apart for quite some time between meetups!

Paris eh? Tenerife? Crikey you must have much more money than me!

As always some excellent reading, and I know the feeling of the end of the adventure. It hits you for six doesn't it, when you realise just how much you've done and all the experiences you've had. When my 6 day mega bash is over on Saturday, having not been away for weeks, it'll hit me hard but it goes so quick!

Like I said in my PM, 2 weeks is fairly standard! And as for Tenerife in particular, that's because my parents are just giving me the money that would have gone on me going with them instead. Paris however we are saving for.

And indeed, it does hit you. Especially on an ALR when you're used to masses of freedom!

NET bash- 15/10/16

Having not stretched my legs down the ECML in a month or so, I decided to snare some cheap tickets to a destination down south. Having been meant to go out on Friday night, I had some extra cash in hand (as said meeting was cancelled) so extended my trip to Nottingham. However, I noted that a Sheffield to Fiskerton ticket was the same price with numerous advantages I won’t list but if anyone wants to know them then do PM me  Anyways, it was a very early start on the 0603 to Liverpool as per usual with my cheap trips, and it was the turn of dud 185122 for the run today. I ended up falling asleep for the run, waking up on the approaches to York, jumping off and swapping onto dud 220011 behind for the run through to Sheffield, which was remarkably busy after Doncaster. I was rather irritated to see two blokes refuse to give a very shy lad his reserved seat though, and was tempted to say something but was far too tired myself to say much.

Dud 222005 was next for a filler run to Chesterfield, before the first successful move of the day was done on winner 43076 leading dud 43089 for the hop to Alfreton. I had to explain to the guard on this train where exactly Fiskerton actually was  In the hope of another winner, I bailed there for the Norwich, which was annoyingly formed of dud 158865. Ah well, into Nottingham at 0925 where the Tram action began. After buying my ticket, winner 224 was first up to shack 1, Queen’s Medical Centre. I had actually meant to bail at NG2 but didn’t realise that the network is a wholly request stop one so we sailed past it  Quick swap here then saw me take one of the older style trams, winner 207, to shack 2, Gregory Street.

Winner 237 was then taken to shack 3, Cator Lane, and as you can tell, I had absolutely no method for bashing. I was just hopping around  Winner 225 was then soon appearing to take me back one stop to shack 4, High Road – Central College, where I noted that we had two trams running in quick succession, very useful indeed.

Winner 217 was taken to shack 5, Bramcote Lane, where indeed, an empty winner 204 was chasing up the rear. It was then taken through to the terminus, shack 6, Toton Lane, where I swapped back onto fresh dud 217. This was taken the one stop to shack 7, Inham Road, where I decided to have a stroll through the drizzle to shack 8, Eskdale Drive. Of course, next up was dud 204 which had since repositioned itself and was now running to the 7 minute headway. It was taken to shack 9, Middle Street. Winner 228 then proceeded to trundle me along to shack 10, Chilwell Road, where there was a 5 minute fester for winner 233 to shack 11, Beeston Centre. It was then time for a quick change of scenery and some variety as I joined a very tuneful ’51 reg Optare Solo for the hop to Beeston Station, where I made a very lucky move onto a late running dud 222010 to Nottingham, where it was time to get on with the Clifton Branch.

Winner 213 was first up to shack 12, Ruddington Lane, where I noted that this line appeared to be somewhat of the poor relation. At least, the clientele appeared to suggest that! Winner 231 then took me back to shack 13, Compton Acres, which looked even shadier than Ruddington Lane  A tram I didn’t record for some reason then took me up to shack 14, Rivergreen, where I dived across onto winner 220 for the run back to shack 15, Southchurch Drive North. The winners then kept coming with winner 236 trundling me along to shack 16, Summerwood Lane, where I dived onto winner 216, quite literally. Indeed, the hustle alarm was so quiet that I ended up jamming the door for a second as it proceeded to suddenly close on me! Same very quick change was made as I arrived at shack 17, Clifton Centre, onto winner 212 for the run to the end of the line, shack 18, Clifton South.

On changing ends, I took it back to shack 19, Holy Trinity, for a linear move while I picked up a pasty from a nearby shop. It wasn’t the best, but was the best I could get with my £1 in change  Winner 203 was then duly taken back to Nottingham Station. This was because my next line of attack was the old side of the network, and to get me a headstart, I took winner 158799 to shack 20, Bulwell (Mainline) where I could cross over to shack 21, Bulwell (NET) and take winner 222 to shack 22, Moor Bridge. I encountered the path of some RPIs here, and having ended up taking winner 221 back down the line to shack 23, Bulwell Forest, I reassured them that I was merely interested in the network rather than following them  They seemed rather interested in what I was doing too, and were actually really nice! They joined me for a subsequent third time as I jumped on dud 225 to shack 24, Butlers Hill, and awaited its return to take me to shack 25, Highbury Vale A/Hucknall Branch. I guess that me walking over to Highbury Vale B/Phoenix Park Branch counts as shack number 26 too!

Winner 227 was in charge for the winding short route to shack 27, Phoenix Park. I was pleased to also note that instead of the same tram going straight back, another went straight back out, leaving a 7 minute turnaround for the fresh inbound. As a result, a quick hop was made over to winner 209 for the single intermediate station on the branch, shack 28, Cinderhill. I was also the only passenger here, so it clearly wasn’t the best used. Dud 227 soon however followed back in and it was time for some linear moves I won’t bore you with except in list form

227 Cinderhill-David Lane
204 David Lane-Basford
231 Basford-Radford Road (also a walking move to Beaconsfield Street)
229 Radford Road-Hyson Green Market
210 Hyson Green Market-The Forest
219 The Forest-Noel Street
212 Noel Street-Shipstone Street
215 Shipstone Street-Wilkinson Street
223 Wilkinson Street-High School
216 High School-Nottingham Trent University
228 Nottingham Trent University-Royal Centre
236 Royal Centre-Old Market Square
214 Old Market Square-Lace Market

Linear moves done, it was time to mop up the shacks I had left on the Clifton South branch. Dud 212 was first, and taken to shack 43, Meadows Embankment, for a quick swap onto dud 210 back to shack 44, Queens Walk. Judging the timings of these shacks was a dark art in itself that I’d perfected, on doing a linear move to Wilford Village, shack 45, on winner 203, followed by one on winner 235 to shack 46, Wilford Lane. This completed the line and meant that I’d have to be just as cunning with the Toton Line if I were to finish in time for my intended random move out onto the Castle Line (remember my ticket is to Fiskerton!) and with dud 216 taking me back to Nottingham Station, all looked to be looking up. Winner 234 was up next, but on getting close to NG2, there was an obvious missed connection and the boards suggested another at Meadows Way West. No problem, I’d do the uni shacks first. Except, I was clearly going to miss the connection at the second of those, so I bailed at shack 47, University of Nottingham, for a linear move on dud 221 to shack 48, University Boulevard. I thought that I’d easily pull off the connection this time, but instead I missed it by seconds.

There was no way I’d make the last two shacks in time now, so I resigned myself to dud 215 back to Nottingham station. Still, clearing all but two shacks on the whole system at once wasn’t a bad feat! I had a few minutes to grab food before running for winner 156497 working the 1649 to Newark Castle. This was taken to Fiskerton, and I had a +35 for it to come back. I could walk to Rolleston, score it, and come back, simple. Except not so, as the crossing was having works done, and when I reached within breathing distance of Rolleston, I was greeted with a locked gate that was unmanned because the person in charge of manning it was out of view! I resigned myself to going back to Fiskerton instead, and just getting the 1 shack on the line. Rolleston could wait! Dud 156497 turned up again, and I bailed at shack 49, Bleasby, one that I’d had to miss last time due to level crossing issues too! It was however a pleasant 15 minute wait until winner 156404 rolled in behind to take me back to a dark Nottingham.

On sighting a winning 43073 on the back of the St Pancras HST, I frantically checked RTT to see if going via East Midlands Parkway was viable. It was, but it was a +4 and one that I absolutely HAD to make, so I wimped out. Awful idea! I’d have scored my last 222/1 on the Sheffield connection if I’d stuck to this. The compromise however was winner 170397 to Derby, so I wasn’t wholly deprived of a score! My connection was already waiting in the form of dud 220034 which I was booked on from Sheffield. It was a busy service full of drinkers, and we had the BTP called at Sheffield due to a fight in Coach F, which delayed us by 13 minutes. However, on arrival at York, it was clear that the fun was just beginning as I mingled with crying tipsy middle aged women awaiting the 2109 to Newcastle  A TPE staff member noticed I was actually sober and made friendly conversation, remarking that I was in for a fun journey aboard dud 185126 and oh boy was I! Lots of yelling, laughing, screaming, dancing, high fiving and falling over went on in Coach A as I half laughed and half wanted to just fall asleep

It was however, a successful day!

Sounds like a highly successful day and you're doing better on the NET than me! Shame about Rolleston though and not going for the connection at East Mids Parkway.

Sounds like a good time, I just wish I had the time and the money to do an ALR. I agree with tech, I wouldn't want to do 14 days straight especially without a hotel.

I don't have much time for bashing at the moment, but after I've done my A levels then I'll have loads of time, to as much bashing as I like.

A good day on the trams in Nottingham :)

Shame on missing a couple shacks, but it gives you an excuse to revisit at another time (as well as hunting down any remaining trams)

Cheers Kite, and indeed I scored 27/37 of the Trams so 10 more to hunt too!

Just caught up on the last bit of your ALR. Loved the summing up bit at the end, really bought back memories of the way it made me feel when I used to do them.
I've enjoyed reading all of it all the way through.
You're right about getting the right balance and actually looking around you and taking in the life and scenery that you're experiencing. Excellent.

To clear almost all shacks in one day is just awesome, extremely good going!

You may well have two shacks left to get on NET, but at least you don't have the forum celebrity tram to chase ;)

Thanks for all your comments with regards to both my last escapade and the ALR.

Indeed, it was somewhat of a life experience more than anything, and I'm sure it'll be repeated in various guises in years to come.

So a lil update of what's upcoming:

I'm going away tomorrow until Sunday with my girlfriend to the Lakes, hopefully one or two scores to be had there and possibly a ticking off of Penrith North Lakes/Kendal.

The following Saturday i've decided to bite the bullet and do a Cheshire Day Ranger, as I have many shack and unit requirements that way! 0845 arrival at Manchester and not departing until 2042 so plenty time to get stuck in. In foresight, November is probably an awful time to be out from 0603 to 2309 but we shall see

Then the following Saturday, i'm nipping to Nottingham again for a university open day, should be done by 1230ish, and the last train I can catch home is the 1744 to Sheffield (for the 1856 Vomiter home), so time to finish those 2 shacks on the NET and then i'm not sure what else?

November is better than December or January time ;)

Maybe get a "Robin Hood" day ticket to see if any required 222s tip up doable on Beeston leaps?

That was my first thought, along with the XC 170s. Shame the HSTs don't have calls until East Mids Parkway.

Better than going after remote Scottish shacks the afternoon before Storm Gertrude arrived...;)

If you were from the Midlands or the South, I'd sympathise your long November day, but you're a Northerner so even if it will be cold you'll be fine!

I'm going to be at Sheffield at that sort of time (I see that you have about 20 minutes before the 18:56 - I'm on the 18:58 with Nathan to New Street so do you fancy meeting for a few mins?

Think that evening will be spent getting Ince and Elton, Stanlow and Thornton, Nantwich and Whitchurch!

And aye true, I did spend the evening of December 29 doing the shacks on the Castle line. A +28 at Burton Joyce in the pitch black was most bleak yet I recall it being strangely mild!

Possibly aye, do remind me a tad closer to the time! If I stick to that service then I'll be more than happy to say hello!

I will be floating around Sheffield on the 19th November as well (if I've got your diary worked out) with the aim of doing some Super-tram stuff :)

I should be free then (I'm meeting the girlfriend on the 13th I think, meaning I'm free the next weekend), just depends on money and cheap advance fares as honestly I need to blitz the Supertram too!

I might have counted the saturdays wrong

I think my rough idea for the Supertram is to walk between several of the stops if they are within walking distance before the next tram is due (judging by the map). Although that depends on the weather if it be raining

From memory, there's a couple within walking distance on the Hillsborough end of the line.

I think I walked from Middlewood to Leppings Lane to Hillsborough Park, and of course a few of the city centre ones are very close indeed.

Doing a Quinn approved move this morning! 1E02 to York was 11L and I missed the 8:40 TPE so scooped myself 25 extra HST miles on the 8:45 XC instead. Definitely a superior run!

I think I got your diary confused as well by a weekend or two - I'm in Sheffield on the 5th of November.

I most certainly do approve of your move there - which powercars?

Ah okay, I'm in Cheshire then.

43357 was leading, didn't get the trailing one.

You didn't get the trailing one?!?!?! I know that 321 was with 357 on Wednesday but have no idea for today.
