Indeed it's been quite an experience. I was let loose to bash myself last night for a couple of hours, sadly no loco workings but still productive.

Yeah they're the FLIRTs. Also had a 427 from Wuppertal Hbf to Vohwinkel.

Anyway, cities visited were Köln, Düsseldorf, Essen, Aachen, Frankfurt, Mainz, Duisburg and Dortmund along with Wuppertal and the charming town of Stolberg.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Anyway, here's a couple shots to whet your appetites. The middle shot may look slightly familiar ;)

Germany- Day 2/6

It’s time to dive straight in with day 2 as day 1 of the trip was simply myself and the parents catching two flights to Dusseldorf, then heading to the hotel in Cologne (Marsdorf specifically). This scored a few units, namely 423292/423293, 425105, 2222/2308 & 4033/4123. Those random numbers will make sense in due course! Anyway, it was up early on day two as we had a ‘Beautiful Weekend ticket’ as literally translated, which meant that for a mere 49EUR, the three of us (yes, all three for 49 euros!) could travel anywhere we liked in Germany provided we used S Bahn, RegionalBahn or RegionalExpress services, so basically anything that wasn’t the ICE or IC. Sadly, on our part of the Tram Line, the frequency was poor. Max was every 10 minutes in the peaks, every 20 on weekdays off peak, every 30 at weekends and every 60 on Sunday mornings which indeed meant that we had to catch the 0812 service! And winners 4004/4017 rocked up to take us to Neumarkt in Cologne. I’m pretty sure that these are derived from the Croydon Trams as they look very similar! From there we had to transfer to a Line 16 service which was a high level type line, being mainly underground, resembling a typical underground line moreso than a tram. This had winner 2310 operating for the short 2 stop hop to Dom/Hauptbahnhof where the fun could begin.

Our first port of call was meant to be a change at Koblenz but as we turned up so early, we joined the first train heading that way which was winner 460002 on the 0856 to Mainz via Remagen, Koblenz, and Boppard. This was a pretty busy service but there were plenty of seats for the journey to shack 7 for the week, Remagen. This was a quiet little town at 10am on a Sunday but the views down by the Rhine were most amazing as we took the chance to grab a few shots of the pretty riverside before strolling back uphill to the station where there was the first delay of many that day as the RE5 to Koblenz was 10 late, however, I wasn’t too fussed as we had a chunky +20 onto the Mainz service. This was also the first loco haulage of many as winner 146257 rolled in, powering the 0740 from Emmerich to Koblenz, one mammoth journey! Seats were sourced in the lower saloon and it was a pretty nippy half hours journey before we were deposited at shack 8, Koblenz Hauptbahnhof. Slight issue here as the Mainz/Frankfurt service was already arriving and the platform was heaving!

We ran over to Platform 6 to see about 30 bikes attempting to cram onto winner 429103, but somehow most of them squeezed on. We just needed seats. However one bike user didn’t notice me in particular, pinning me against the glass panel and ramming the handlebar into my err manhood so to speak  As he continued this, I ended up yelling ‘excuse me’ in German in increasingly agitated tones until he stopped, leaving us to source some rather nice leather seats in a coach further to the rear. However, the bikes didn’t stop coming and in the end the conductor came over the PA telling people with bikes to stop boarding as there simply wasn’t enough room anymore (even with a carriage practically dedicated to them). This didn’t stop them however and in the end the doors were forced shut to allow us to leave on schedule. We took the West Rhine Railway route, a most beautiful run, calling only at selected stations on route, but it was beginning to feel strangely like home as the crowds kept pushing on, leaving us full up on departure from Boppard. However there was a distinct difference compared to British travel, as passengers offered to lift bags from seats into the racks and the conductor did the same, ensuring everyone was able to fit in.

We eventually arrived at shack 9, Mainz Hauptbahnhof, where it was time for a break. We took a stroll down to the river where all seemed very nice indeed. It was certainly a peaceful place to spend an hour or so. However my mum suddenly had the issue of a rather nasty nosebleed (I’ll spare anymore details) which had me running back through Mainz to get some tissues from a store, so most of our time here in the end was spent making sure she was fit to continue, as it wasn’t a pleasant experience! It was decided that we should probably continue to Frankfurt as that would likely have more to offer. Back to the station we went after a sit around the Rhine, and everything was delayed again! We caught winners 430145/430188 on their journey working a stopping S8 service to Offenbach Ost, and it was actually really comfortable and quiet! Despite being 25L on a half hourly service, we weren’t too busy and we continued on our way as normal. The scenery wasn’t the most enthralling but it was a good run until Frankfurt Airport. The platform was dangerously overcrowded and we filled up beyond what we could take. On an attempted departure the train moved and was quickly stopped by an emergency brake application again which led to the driver running down the platform for some reason. Eventually, 37 late, we left the station and the driver came over the PA apologising, saying that the initial delay was due to vandalism, but my German didn’t stretch far enough to know what the second delay was all about.

We eventually then trundled into shack 10, Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof, where it was time for a walk, and food. We found our way to the River Main and took a seat to enjoy sandwiches from Backwerk (the German version of Greggs basically) before taking a stroll into the old town. It was indeed very pretty, and there did seem to be some kind of event going on, on the south bank. After a decent enough walk around Frankfurt, it was time to make the scenic trip back towards Cologne via Siegen. Our first train was to be from shack 11, Frankfurt Hauptwache. Winners 430130/430174 took us back to the Hauptbahnhof, where a Frankfurter each was sourced (what else?!) and we caught the 1720 to Kassel, which had winner loco 146256 powering at the back. This time we had upstairs seats and it was an unusually sluggish journey north, which did unnerve us considering the 9 minute connection we had next. However, on checking my phone, we were actually on time, it was just a very slow line! But then disaster struck as we went to get up, being rudely ushered back to our seats by the conductor which wasn’t the nicest thing but it seems he had good reason. Having checked our tickets, he said there was a trespasser running around in front of the train which had caused us to come to a stand. He said he anticipated a 20 minute delay. Goodbye connection, then.

When I mentioned this, he got on his phone and I thought ‘ah, he’ll be checking the next Siegen service for us’. Nope, to my utter amazement he was calling Giessen station to get the 1905 held! Sadly this didn’t pay off as he said they couldn’t hold it as we were delayed for too long, apologising profusely about how clearly DB had failed us today. Imagine that in the UK! Eventually we staggered into shack 12, Giessen, about 25 late, where we resigned ourselves to a long wait in the sun. However, I consulted the station timetable for better options. You see, every German station has a paper departure board for every service with principal calling points and arrival times along with expected platforms listed! I quickly worked out that we could kill time by catching a stopper to Dillenburg and then joining the Siegen train there. An excellent choice as a winner loco 114038 was ticking over on Platform 14 with this service. A nice quiet train it was too, as we got ourselves a bay of 4 upstairs for a gentle meander through the countryside to shack 13, Dillenburg. We thought our troubles were over here but there was a stopping service to Siegen already at platform, leading us to believe that this was a better option.

427041, Dillenburg. by Richard Green, on Flickr

It really wasn’t, and I encouraged my parents not to board the service as of course the correct service that called only at one station en route was coming from Giessen anyway! Indeed, winner 427541 eventually sped in, with us having a much faster run and being able to make our connection 60 minutes behind schedule! These trains were lovely inside, even having sockets and being fully walk through from end to end. We arrived bang on time at shack 14, Siegen, to the sight of a little Abellio unit which appeared to be our train! Hint, it damn well wasn’t! The Cologne train was hidden on Platform 55 (Siegen has platforms 1, 2, 5, 11a and 55 for reasons of god knows what) and we had to sprint to make winner 442102 for the journey back to Cologne Hauptbahnhof. What a journey it was too! Some amazing scenery again as we silently made our way through the hills before joining civilisation again and making local calls at Au (Sieg) among other places before arriving back at the Hauptbahnhof, leaving us to have the reverse journey from the morning on the Stadtbahn, apparently on trains I forgot to record! In any case, we reached the hotel again at around 2233, suitably exhausted!

Quite a mission there, goes to show it can and does go wrong in Europe too. I've had issues in Europe too, a broken rail caused major disruption to services between the Netherlands and Germany. I wasn't willing to endure a bus so went all the way round via Eindhoven and Liege to Aachen!

I know those paper timetables, they are very useful! I don't think I saw any DB 442s while over there, but their 643s are surprisingly decent. Only German trains I've been on sadly, I really need to get back over there. Same for the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg for that matter...

Those trams are indeed very similar to those used in Croydon, the similarities are striking. The issue with cycles you endured had me cringing, as no doubt all the other blokes on here will find when they read that bit! A nosebleed for your Mum can't have been too nice either, less than ideal to have it happen on a trip. Sounds like your dad got off scot-free

An excellent read, and I look forward to the next part when it's ready. Make sure you keep having a good time first!

Sounds like a brilliant time except the cyclist! Good to hear that you got some loco hauled! Sounds like DB is a brilliant TOC! You just couldn't imagine that over here...

I must add that my journey from Cologne-Remagen was operated by MittelRheinBahn, not DB, and the Dillenburg-Siegen leg was operated by Hessische Landesbahn. Private operators seem to mingle quite well with the Nationalised lines.

Indeed, it was one heck of a first day, with more to come soon! But for now, it's a 4:40am alarm and i'm off to Tech Land in the morning, also known as Brum ;)

Ouch to the 221! Hopefully the tram thrash on GC will be good! I'm getting a 68 up and a 68 back (different ones) so I should be getting two from 68008, 009 and 010.

Technically they are multiple TOCs, DB Fernverkehr for Intercity trains and DB REGIO for local trains. Each region has their own DB REGIO and they bid with private companies to operate a line(s) (like a franchise over here)

Most loco hauled stuff eg: BR111/143 + n wagen is being replaced by new Units, mostly by the BR442 TALENT or the BR429 FLIRT

I think the BR146 + Dostos are safe because they are relatively new.

I didn't realise that Koln had some BR420s, I thought they all had been scrapped (except the 2 in Munich)

Sounds like you had a good time!
Did you just use Day ticket for all the Regions you visited?

We used a Schönes Wochenende ticket for that day and the NRW SchönerTag ticket for the upcoming days. And Köln just seems to have one pair running a single diagram. Only got a short hop on one but I'm just glad I captured it before they go altogether.

One annoying diagram I failed to capture was a BR120 hauled Siegen service, went for it and a pair of 442s turned up!

And aye tech, having a good time here. Just randomly bouncing around without any particular goals, but currently at Corporation Street so no prizes for guessing what I'm up to at the minute [emoji14]

Cheers Lord Spoon, even if the rest of the forum will need to pull out the Geordie dictionary [emoji14] She's had some canny stinking migraines so it's probably down to that.

The next part of the report involves us going to Düsseldorf, and indeed that show does ring a bell, even if it's probably before my time ;) Indeed, my German was brushed up on again having dropped the subject in October too!

Then I revoke your membership to the club! At least you've done the new extension before most of the core trip reporters! Not before two of the most prolific ones though (me and Kite) ;)

Germany's a place I've yet to visit.
Everything I've seen about it shows it to be a great place, both for a bit of cranking and some sight-seeing. It's definitely on my to-do list.
Oh and Auf Wiedersehen Pet was fantastic :)

Back to blighty for now...

Daytripper plus a little more... 04/06/16

It was time to be back on the rails for a bash a mere two days after landing back in Newcastle, and this time I was off for an actual bash in the Midlands! However, not being one for slogging both ways via Derby, I opted for a nice run via London on the return, even if it meant catching a Voyager. I’d rather a 70 minute blast on one at full tilt than 194 minutes on one that has excessive dwells at Derby, Sheffield, Doncaster and York. And with that, I was up at 4:45 and ready to catch the 0603 service to Manchester Victoria as far as York. I could swear that I practically live on this train these days! It is however a peaceful journey and today was no exception with dud 185131 providing the journey south. In all honesty, having had my ticket checked before we passed Tyne Yard, I lay down across the seats to sleep, being awoken by ‘we’re now arriving at York!’ and conveniently, we were pretty punctual, being 1 or 2 down as I leapt off and was ready for the next leg of the journey, on dud 220014 which was working the 0727 to Reading. This is a similar service that is insanely padded and wastes a heck of a lot of time only to have a stupidly short dwell at Sheffield.

By this I mean it sits at York from 0721 to 0727, Doncaster 0749 to 0756, then only has from 0818 to 0820 at Sheffield. In all honesty however, I was knocked out to sleep again (I’d had 3hrs 45mins sleep the previous night, having stayed up to ensure that the girlfriend was home safe from a concert as she was catching an all stops Manchester Vic-Leeds that was rammed and full of drunks) and then awoken at Sheffield by the sound of a man giggling at me sleeping. I honestly have no idea why, and I ended up falling asleep again until Water Orton where I staggered up out of my seat again and off the train. I’m pretty sure we were roughly on time, being booked in for 0928. I nipped to the ticket office, paid my £6.50 for a Daytripper, and headed for whatever was leaving first. This probably wasn’t the most sensible option in hindsight as I jumped on the 0939 Birmingham International, being worked by dud 323208. However, I required every shack en route so a quick bail at shack 1, Stechford, was still a productive move. It was then a short wait until winner 350118 carted me back along to New Street for about 1000.

Time for something a little more productive however as I ran down Platform 4 into bay Platform 4C and joined winners 170507/170517 on the 1005 to Shrewsbury, as far as shack 2, Sandwell and Dudley. Conveniently, right behind us was winner 323210 which was duly taken to shack 3, Tipton. I was most amused to see the PERTIS machine still functioning, as I put 10p in the machine, and it printed me a rather antiquated looking Permit to Travel that had the wrong time on it  I then had to get a move on and go under the subway, joining winner 323203 to shack 4, Smethwick Rolfe Street, where I could have gone onwards to Coseley for a fast service back to New Street, but I instead opted to just take winner 323240 to Smethwick Galton Bridge where I noted a late running service towards Stratford was due, perfect for me as I wanted Jewellery Quarter, so by instinct I headed to the busy platform only to realise that I was wandering over to the Stourbridge one just as dud 172339 pulled in. By the time I ran back down it was ready to leave so I was a tad irritated, but this was really a blessing in disguise. Winner 172333 was next up and that was the one to take me to shack 5, Jewellery Quarter.

Annoyingly, I’d just missed a tram but it was a short wait for winner 30 to shack 6, St Paul’s, where I had all of 10 seconds to dive out of the front door of this tram and into the rear door of the next, winner 34 which was taken to shack 7, Soho Benson Road. At this point I decided to go for the city centre shacks considering the recent opening of the new extension, and took winner 26 to shack 8, Grand Central. I must say that the trams are very bright and airy and do the job, but the number of announcements was driving me nuts! The one reminding passengers that they indeed had to press a button to make the door open just had me rolling my eyes  but my eyes were more focused on the running through the city, being deposited outside of New Street station to the sight of a tram awaiting the all clear to cross over onto the departing platform. This was fresh dud 30 but it was duly taken to shack 9, Snow Hill. Weirdly enough, it seemed to be a bit useless for accessing Snow Hill station itself, as shown by the fact that not a single person alighted with me and not a single person boarded as I took winner 36 back to shack 10, Corporation Street. The Grand Central bound platform here did feel a little…sparse. It was basically a raised pavement with a small sign at the end. Not that I can envision many travelled the short distance towards there!

Winner 33 was next to shack 11, Bull Street where that was all shacks from The Hawthorns into the City complete. What next? Well I needed to tie up a few loose ends on the Snow Hill shacks, so it was a short walk to shack 12, Birmingham Snow Hill (I’m counting it as different to the tram shack, they’re miles apart!) and a dive into winner 172344 in the Whitlock’s End direction. I needed Yardley Wood, Shirley and Whitlock’s End but they all looked like an absolute faff. Long waits at each and all. However, I spotted a chance of making a -2 at Shirley as the Stourbridge was running 4 late. However, it was around 2.5 late when we arrived at shack 13, Shirley, which meant that we arrived in about 10 seconds before it and I was at the wrong end of the platform! However, undeterred, I legged it over the bridge and straight into the nearest door of winner 172337 just as the door closure cycle was about to begin. Well, that was one fester avoided. However, on leaving at shack 14, Yardley Wood, I realised that I had a +17 as a result of making this service, so I killed some time by activating my new bank card in the TVM as it needed to make a chip and pin transaction before being able to use contactless.

I bought a child single from Wrexham General to Central for a princely £0.60 as this seemed like the cheapest ticket I could think of! Turns out I could have had Lichfield City-TV for £0.45 but hardly any difference in it. By the time I’d played around with the TVM and bought the rather pointless ticket, shoving it in my wallet and wandering down to the platform again, dud 172339 wasn’t far off and it was taken to shack 15, Whitlock’s End. That was the line all the way from Stourbridge to Whitlock’s End complete with the exception of, I do believe, Langley Green! I can envision getting in the likes of Danzey, Wood End, The Lakes, Earlswood etc etc being one long and arduous task considering I need everything from Wilmcote-Whitlock’s End! (Wilmcote being scratched way back in August 2010 on 150001!) After the ten minute turnaround, we got going again and I was deposited back at Birmingham Snow Hill ready to cross onto winner 168108 for the short hop back to Moor Street. Continuing the insect leaps, winner 172343 was next back to Snow Hill, followed by dud 172337 back to Moor Street. This was just in time for winner 168111 to take me back to Snow Hill and dive into dud 172333 to Moor Street for everyone’s favourite bit about catching a service from Moor Street.

I sauntered over to winner 68008 which was working the 1355 Marylebone and took it to Solihull. By far the most pleasant journey of the day, and my first time in Standard on the Mainline service as beforehand I’d used Business Class to get to London, definitely well worth the tenner on weekends. Annoyingly the service back was dud 172333 again, which seemed to be keen to haunt me, and it was taken back to Moor Street for the stroll to New Street. A short stint on the Cross City was next as I jumped on winner 323214 to shack 16, Chester Road. All these shacks are a damn faff to cross over, though! I was held up by a crowd getting off the train here, but thankfully made it under in time to take winner 323209 to shack 17, Gravelly Hill aka the black hole of internet signal. I have no idea why this area had little or no internet signal, and to be honest I originally put it down to the station being in a cutting, but on going out onto the streets above I encountered the same issue. Most bizarre. The line also fell apart at this point, with my service being 9 late, meaning I’d probably need to forego a shack to keep things running smoothly. In this instance, I scrapped Erdington and joined a very unhealthy sounding winner 323206 to shack 18, Wylde Green. Seriously, it took forever to get off the mark and the motors sounded ready to give up! At this point I decided to leave the Cross City for another day and took winner 323219 back to New Street and went to grab some dinner.

Back onto the platforms at 1605 and I noted winner 350122 trailing dud 350374 on the 1614 Euston via Northampton, so I joined and expected to be away sharp. In the end, a 9Mxx Pendolino from Glasgow held us up until 1621, meaning that my connection onto the service behind was going to be tight! I left at Birmingham International and coming in straight behind was dud 221106 with winner 221112 tacked on the back. I took a seat in Coach A as that seemed to be the quietest option, and sat back for a stagger to Coventry (that Euston via Northampton was all stations to Coventry!) where we ended up around 10 late. However, we then absolutely hammered it all the way to Watford Junction with the tilt in full force as we were only 4 late on arrival. Further time was then made up as we arrived into Euston 1 late at 1757 and I decided to give this Contactless malarkey a go. It was more expensive that I’d pay on Oyster (which I don’t have anyway) but I needed to save my legs so I tapped in, paid my £2.40 and decided that I had enough time to be productive. A Northern Line was taken to shack 19, Angel, where I had 2 minutes until another took me to shack 20, Old Street. Not bad for 10 minutes work! I took another to Kings Cross where I tapped out again and went for half an hours rest up in Granary Square by the canal.

This time passed a little too quickly as I hopped up to my feet again and went in search of food for the journey home. Boots lacked much and in the end I found myself in Waitrose. A sausage roll and bottle of fizzy water for £1.50 however wasn’t bad going! I then decided to go wait on the bridge at Kings Cross as my train could only be one of two, the one on P4 or the one on P6. Initially I was kicking myself as the one arriving on 4 was coming from Sunderland so I assumed it’d be going back. It was also dud 180114, the only GC 180 I’ve had every time I’ve caught them. Yes, it’s always been the same one  However it turned out we were on 6, so it was winner 180112 instead for the non-stop run to York. This was a heavily reserved service so I was rather fearful of being jammed in for the journey but our carriage only ended up being about 2/3 full, so I did indeed end up with room to move for what was actually a very pleasant journey! I’d definitely travel Grand Central again down to London (and indeed I actually am on August 15, sadly it’s the 0821 off York which is once more booked an Adelante). However the peace was shattered on arriving at York 2 late at 2100. On came the drunken masses, and I had to jump off pronto to avoid getting trampled back onto the train!

I was catching the usual 2110 to Newcastle (in this instance because it was the only cheap service left to be honest) and yep, you guessed it, utterly nuts. Dud 185151 was in charge and within a second of seeing the gaggle of intoxicated revellers, I went straight into First Class, deciding to upgrade. It seems however that they all had the same idea, with a few deciding that they’d also like to sit in First. None of them joined me at least, so I had a table of four to myself all the way back. In the end, I didn’t even pay the upgrade as the guard couldn’t shift the revellers out of the carriage so he said it was a bit pointless me paying for the pleasure of their company! Just as well, as a group of middle aged blokes dressed themselves in the antimacassars off the seats and proceeded to act as bouncers for the compartment, heckling women and cat-calling them as they boarded. True gents. Thankfully we stayed punctual as I was off quick at Newcastle for 2220, heading for the comfort of my Dad’s car home, seeing me in the house for around 2235.

A productive, varied day, I’d say!

I shall have Germany up in due course (Day 3 is just about ready to write) and after that the next report shall be from June 25. Next two Saturdays i'm with my girlfriend again, though as ever, I shall be using the rails and on the 18th should be looking to bag a couple 507s/508s ;)

Sounds like a fun day in Brum! Shame you got a 180 back to York, a pair of 221s to Euston and the drunken idiots in the 185 on the way back but other than that, it sounds like a great time was had.

Twas indeed, the 180 was actually very pleasant and I'm not massively hung up on the Voyagers. Only had about 6 people in the carriage down to Euston and about 45 minutes at full pelt was nothing to complain about too much :)

Aside from the drunken idiots, one helluva beast day! Some of the local shacks on my stomping ground are awkward to change platforms at, not all though!

Quite the clearout had that's for sure, I don't blame you sleeping on the way to Birmingham. Good of you to stay up to make sure you heard from the lass when she got home too, a gentleman!

West Yorkshire shacks- 09/06/16

So I’d came up with an impromptu bash idea last night which coincided with my going and surprising my girlfriend (briefly at least) as we hadn’t seen each other in a good 3 weeks. It was on the semi-cheap, with VTEC having an £8.90 FC advance on the 0757 to York and a £4.80 SC advance on the 2036 return. A £5.30 return via the slow but direct services to Leeds would do as ever. This wasn’t a bash for winners, nor did I really expect it to be to be honest. 153358 appeared at one point but that’s the only other winner I even sighted, with my requirements on West Yorkshire being reduced to a handful of each class, and in the case of the 155s and 322s, none at all.

I took the 0654 (it turned up at 0650 though?!) bus into town, powerwalking my way to the station and plonking myself in the First Class lounge which has of course been recently refreshed. If anything, it was just less dark and dingy. It was nice to not be sat on a torn sofa type thing with a dark arrangement of biscuits at the back. Soon enough however it was time to join duds 43290/43306 on the 0757 to London, plonking myself in Coach L and being instantly treated to juice and toast followed by 2 tea rounds and a bacon sandwich. I wasn’t feeling too great this morning so I couldn’t quite stomach a full English, but the sandwich was very good, If a little salty. By the time I’d finished all that off it was actually time to get off (Full service on a York ticket is a bit jammy, I’ll admit  ) And I jumped off to find York in an utter mess! The 0827 Blackpool North hadn’t yet left and my 0918 service was 37 late on its inbound run. On querying at the VTEC desk I was met with ‘I don’t even know why it’s even late, you’ll just have to get comfortable.’

It was started up with dud 158797 and a different crew however, but we still left 9 late, making up a few of those minutes on the way to Leeds as we had a booked 5 minute dwell at Church Fenton. Into Leeds at 1004, and my options were slightly limited. My only main block of requirements were on the Pontefract Line so I resigned myself to a 25 minute wait for dud 144011 on the 1033 to Sheffield which was duly taken as far as Castleford. I spotted an additional shack scratch opportunity here, running to the bus station for the 1103 to XScape, operated by some unidentifiable Dennis Trident on Route 134. Operated by M Travel, and I was wholly unimpressed. It was a bit of a mess. Nonetheless, it got me to shack 1, Glasshoughton, in time for the 1123 to Knottingley. But it was suddenly also 13 late which meant that I stood no chance of getting to Baghill in time. Back to the buses then and I took the 1124 Route 187 to Pontefract Bus Station where I legged it to Baghill.

Having /bagged/ shack 2, Pontefract Baghill, I ran for the empty Pacer which turned out to be winner 142060 (That just leaves 142007/142030/142031 until I’ve cleared Newton Heath’s finest!) for the journey to shack 3, Moorthorpe. Helpfully, we were 5 early which meant that I could make a -3 onto the 1153 to Leeds, unhelpfully formed of mega dud 142089 for the journey to shack 4, Fitzwilliam. It was a little too quiet and warm here for my liking, and I’m not entirely sure where the local populace had gone to! Also a rather unhelpful frequency here towards Leeds, being 45 and 59 minutes past the hour. I however was off to catch the 1214 to Sheffield, which had another Heaton mega dud 142094 working, and it was duly taken back to Moorthorpe where there was one shack left on the Wakefield Line to get within West Yorkshire, and so my legs took me on the 15 minute walk to shack 5, South Elmsall. Again, I only need 1 Northern 321 and no 322s, so it was little surprise to have dud 322482 for the run to Wakefield Westgate. It was however a pleasant enough run, with me deciding to at least have a half hearted attempt at the last shacks from Wakefield to Knottingley, taking the free bus on the endurance test of a 15 minute journey to Wakefield Kirkgate where dud 144004 was awaiting me on the 1331 service.

It was an utterly dead journey to shack 6, Pontefract Tanshelf. I had no motivation at all to faff around with Streethouse and Featherstone (they’re too far apart to walk between in time for the next train and there seemed to be little in the way of a bus on offer) so in the end I just took a very stalky dud 142089 back to Wakefield Kirkgate. This at least offered a decent connection onto dud 158842 which then ran fast to Leeds, managing to go from 2 late to 2 early thanks to a decent amount of padding which meant that I could quite easily connect onto the 1449 to Manchester Airport, being worked by dud 185133 (I honestly have no idea where my last required 3 are!) for the non-stop hop to Huddersfield where I had a choice: The 1513 to Sheffield or the 1515 to Wigan. I chose the former, with the inbound connection off the 1515 being 9 late. It was dud 144020 (the 1515 to Slaithwaite would have gotten all duds 150214 and 150142/150211) as far as any shack I liked to Brockholes as I needed them all. In the end I went all the way to shack 7, Brockholes.

It was a short wait in a rather pretty setting with the old station building adjacent us, above the old trackbed. I can’t help but feel like it’d be a more desirable line to use if it was redoubled in these areas and the frequencies went up. At the moment it’s a single line slog and a half all the way to Stocksmoor! I also ended up talking to an old woman about Spotify Premium while on the platform as she was having trouble with it and decided to randomly ask me  However, I soon had dud 144016 taking me back to Huddersfield where I absolutely had to catch either of the 1555 or 1559 to Leeds as otherwise my Rover would be invalid until 1830. I flagged the slow 1559 as it was dud 142016, and took dud 185122 to Leeds instead. We ended up rather late though, getting in at about 1626 versus 1615. With that, I then left the station and purchased a single to Ilkley as of course the rover was no good anymore which is just nonsense really! I decided to head for the 1702 service, sitting in the sun before getting rather suspicious of what RTT was reporting to me.

The service formed from the 1630 Bradford-Leeds, and it was shown as ‘approaching’ Shipley as of 1637, and the time was now 1652! Seems someone had needed to be arrested so the service was eventually running 28 late, which prompted me to sigh and catch the 1716 instead, which had dud 321901 working. This was now much more awkward as 2V50 forms my girlfriend’s train home, so it’d have to be a quick dash off, purchase a single to Bradford (I couldn’t think of a cheaper way to do LDS-ILK-BDQ!) and dive on into wherever she was sat rather than making an appearance at the station. Of course, everyone else had the same idea so the service was absolutely crush loaded. I was in a rather cosy bay of 6 to Guiseley where we were delayed due to the ex Bradford being 27 late, in the end it ran to Ilkley, turned around and formed a service to Shipley where it was caped! We staggered into Ilkley for 1750, 1 minute until it was meant to leave again, so I shoved £2.50 in the machine and ran down the platform just as my girlfriend went to board, surprising her just a tad  However it was certainly most welcome having a catch up as the 321 staggered its way back through the Wharfe Valley, being delayed due to..being delayed in the first place and being out of sync with other services

We parted ways at Forster Square, with me deciding I may as well walk through to the Interchange, knowing the way off by heart now by the number of times we’d ended up walking through Bradford together :p Next up from the Interchange was the 1852 to Leeds and of course my Rover was valid again for the journey on double duds 153332/155347 through to their destination where I nipped to Sainbury’s for dinner. One layered salad and a coke later I was standing around on Platform 14A for what has become a favourite, the 1952 to York. It was dud 158815 today, and I love it because it has a half healthy load on leaving Leeds, then by the time we reach Micklefield it’s utterly dead! There was only 4 of us on the whole train on arrival at York, where I had one more journey to make and that was on dud 91126 working the delayed 2036 to Edinburgh. I found a nice unreserved table in Coach F, and it was a nice peaceful run back to Newcastle for 2141, around 4 late, where I was off for a lift home!

Not many winners, but still a successful day in my books! Think that takes my West Yorkshire shacks down to single figure requirements :D (About 8 to go, 10 if you’re counting Kirkstall Forge and Low Moor!)
