It was indeed Kite, the smell of hops at Haymarket in the evening peak awaiting the 68 working is one now etched into my memory.

Next trip is a short shack scratching mission in West Yorkshire, probably just Slaithwaite, Lockwood, Berry Brow and Honley...

Even though the red pen didn't come out too early, it was still a decent day in the end. Rather long mind, I remember the day after such trips in the past, I'd be up in the morning but I would struggle like mad for energy! A day like yours there, I'd be having at least 5 caffeine hits!

Cowdenbeath for me was done on the way back up from Rosyth (same problem you had) before I got a train back south. It's still nicer than a lot of the places around there mind, I found it dull still as you did, but the Greggs coffee was more than welcome!

Did you enjoy some Cat thrash from North Queensferry into the tunnel there? My fuuuuudddddinnnnnngggg lordz, it's more than worth making the effort for it! <D Jealous of 68017 and 68007, both winners for sight let alone haulage for me!

All these Scottish leaps are only serving to make me green with envy - this year's excursion for me is not until early July but the tickets to Edinburgh are booked, hotel arranged, planning already started .... Main things left to do are one, purchase the Central Scotland Rover and two, get bashing. I hope to drive a few holes in my Scottish requirements but I'll need to keep an eye on the Cats. Hopefully, I'll be able to bag a couple.

Back to the trip report - an excellent read even despite the slow start with winners. But as they say, that's bashing! Even so you came away with what I'd class as a decent haul.

I was actually okay to begin with yesterday, I ended up waking up briefly at 7ish then by 8 I was flat out again! Had I forced myself to get up at 7 however I suspect I probably would have just about managed. I was also functioning on 4hrs sleep from 0100-0500 the night before the bash too!

I did have a cheap can of energy drink at about 2pm, but that was it as far as caffeine was concerned! All I had with me was water. You are also right indeed that Cowdenbeath was probably the nicest place there, considering the look of Lochgelly when I was swapping platforms.

I did indeed enjoy the thrash but sadly I wasn't at the first droplight behind 007, I was at the 2nd as the guard had stationed himself at the first! However 017 seemed to be the noisest of the two, with us having a 2 minute delay out of Haymarket the driver seemed keen to get a move on! I don't think you should have any trouble getting 68007 when you next do the loco hauled however, as it seems to turn up very regularly. Not sure about 017 though, that seemed like a DRS one subbing, much like when I had 68004 last year!

Cheers Keith, indeed I do love Scotland. There's not a lot left for me to get in terms of shacks and all but there's still plenty units to go for, and indeed there's always the Cats like you say! It can be hit and miss, as the regulars ie the Saltire branded ones are 68006/68007, but i've had DRS branded ones turn up as with on Wednesday.

London- 05/04/16

So, following a long previous day (I’d been down in Bradford meeting my girlfriend’s parents, and in the process scored 150103/185145/322485, if you’re interested ) I was up again bright and early for a London bash. I had a few aims, of which only 1 was met in the end, with Plumstead proving too much of an irritance to get, and the prospect of spending 3 hours on the Tattenham Corner branch was slightly depressing  I also decided against spending the evening rush hour on the line via Kidbrooke/Barnehurst, instead becoming a norm and going for a walk, because after all, I don’t go to London all that often! And in order to do it as cheaply as possible I booked myself on the 0603 TPE to York, which had dud 185135 working.

Indeed, I spent most of the journey sleeping with my phone on charge, before waking up to our arrival into York a few minutes late at 0716. I now had a +75, and in the end I just plugged my phone in, in the waiting room and made myself at home. I sat and watched the comings and goings from Platform 9, before wandering onto Platform 5A for the 0831 to London which had dud 91124 nudging it along. The guard on the service, Sean, was amazing, taking 5 minutes to subject me to his endless list of puns  we did quite a bit of staggering, including about 30mph all the way from Hitchin to past Stevenage, but we did arrive into London relatively close to time at 1044. Off I went straight away into the tube, taking the Northern Line to London Bridge and getting ready for an entertaining few hours on the top of the Dartford Loop! First up were double winners 376023/376027 to shack 1, Charlton. This put me quite nicely in the middle of the shacks I needed, so I decided to head in the Dartford direction before coming back over, and with that it was time for dud 465164 leading winner 465019 to shack 2, Abbey Wood. Crossrail work was highly prevalent here, as the station appeared to be somewhat of a work in progress! However, I didn’t have long to wait until dud 465156 sandwiched between double winners 465158/466034 which took me through to shack 3, Erith.

The locals were already beginning to concern me as a dodgy looking bloke demanded cigarettes from me as I walked down the platform and dived onto double winners 465236/465033 for the short run back to shack 4, Belvedere. What a dump! We had some dodgy looking folk rolling cigarettes outside the station entrance, and a granny sat on a bench yelling expletives every time the train was announced as 3 minutes late. Indeed, Belvedere has zero minute connections throughout, so me making double winners 465185/466002 to shack 5, Slade Green, was a bit of luck. However, we were so late that I managed to miss the connection back, so was stuck with a +10 there for winners 376012/376029 to shack 6, Woolwich Dockyard. Awful positioning on the platform on my part, as I missed a +1 on the way back across, and awaited my next service instead. This was all fine until it turned out that my connection from Plumstead had been caped! I wasn’t in the mood for any huge fester there (it would’ve been creeping up to 20 minutes) so I did a linear move and joined double winners 465152/465197 to shack 7, Deptford. For a +4 connection this one was suddenly very difficult! I was in the right place but it was one hell of a run down the stairs, under the bridge and back up again, getting onto the platform just as winner 465016 was approaching.

This was duly taken to shack 8, Westcombe Park where I decided to leave Plumstead for another day (I still need Dartford too) as it would have meant adding a 45 minute time penalty for the sake of 1 shack, and instead crossed over to head to an unannounced service for shack 9, Maze Hill, formed of winners 376006/376017! It was the ‘cancelled’ service from earlier running 9 late! Of course, that meant as soon as I left at Maze Hill, dud 465048 leading winner 465049 was trundling in behind! I took this combination back to London Bridge, where I dropped back onto winner 465046 leading dud 465244 into Cannon Street, where I decided to try and bash the Thameslink Core. Spoilers, I gave up very quickly. Having taken a train of S7 stock to Blackfriars, I somehow ended up on the wrong platform, nearly joining a 387 pair to Three Bridges, and then missed a 377 pair heading north. I’d already decided that Blackfriars was a terrible station for leaps. However, this was a blessing in disguise as 700110 then showed its face in the bay platforms! I was able to have a look in the flesh of one of these Desiro Cities for the first time which was a bonus, before double winners 319005/319220 to me to shack 10, Farringdon. I have no idea how I’ve never had Farringdon, but there we go! Next up was winner 319454 to Herne Hill where I was now in position for another long time required shack.

Indeed, it was double winners 319001/319218 carting me along to shack 11, Loughborough Junction. Bit of a tip. Never mind, double duds 319214/319447 were soon pulling in and for some reason, I took them through to shack 12, Wimbledon Chase. I was going to leap back to Wimbledon but on seeing that it was just 319454 again it seemed rather pointless so I went out and located a Co-Op for lunch. This was followed up by a rather pleasant walk to shack 12, Merton Park. Yes, I was off on the Tramlink! There were Trams due in 1/2/3 minutes so a linear move seemed rather fitting here. Winner 2559 was first up to shack 13, Morden Road, where almost straight away, winner 2539 filed in behind to take me to shack 14, Phipps Bridge. After another short wait, winner 2544 was then next up to take me to shack 15, Mitcham. Things were starting to get a little busier as the evening rush hour hotting up, as winner 2537 took me back along to shack 16, Belgrave Walk. One more, and it was time for dud 2542 to shack 17, Beddington Lane where dud 2551 took me back to Mitcham Junction. I wanted to play with some actual trains again

The next train due in the Sutton direction was the 1620 to Dorking formed of dud 377616 leading winner 377704, so that was duly taken to Sutton where I just went for whatever was leaving first heading towards Croydon. Winners 377603/377702 were first out, so they were taken up to Norwood Junction where I accidentally placed myself miles away from where you could change platforms! My +2 was however made with double winners 377123/377139 to East Croydon, where I was getting out of options until the 1749 Pig to London Bridge, so in the end I just ended up taking double winners 455814/455826 out to South Croydon for a +11 onto double winners 455824/455845 back. Out to Sainsbury’s I then went for a drink, before being teased with many treble winning 377 workings and even a quad winner formation, but for me it was double winners 442401/442411. Excellent, another 2 Pigs in the book, taking me up to 5. We made easy work of the 10 mile sprint, even arriving in early where I decided to take the Jubilee Line to Bond Street, and walked down Oxford Street into Hyde Park.

After a day of bashing it was nice to unwind a little and take a sunny stroll considering London Bridge at rush hour was pretty scary stuff, and I spent about 45 minutes slowly walking from one end to the other before joining a Picc Line train at about 1905 homeward bound. Of course, I wasn’t gonna like that! I bailed at shack 18, Russell Square, walking the last leg to Kings Cross instead. Dinner was picked up and I found double duds 43300/43239 working the 2000 to Sunderland, taking my seat and having what felt like a fast run to York. Alas not, we’d been running below line speed all the way due to engine problems, and the stops at Darlington and Durham only caused further issue as we eventually limped into Newcastle 14 late at 2308, leaving me incredibly tired!

However, all in all, a productive day!

Total Mileage: 623mi 03ch
Total Winners: 38+18 shacks
Total Cost: £55.35

Crikey, it is getting serious now if you're meeting her parents!

An excellent time in London, although I see you got 319220 on consecutive moves there. Girlfriend on the mind perhaps? ;)

You sure gave up easily on the Thameslink Core bash, I can see noddy1878 and Kite159 shaking their heads! They're both experts on the Core Bash, but as I've experienced it too I will say you've got to be determined to do it, otherwise the constant platform changing (you'd be amazed how tiring it is running to/from/over that bridge at Farringdon is after a while...) will make you give up!

Sounds like an excellent time in London there! Shame about the power car issues on the way home though.

Wow I was tired last night  That should be 319218 coupled to 319001. Still a winner nonetheless. And after 2 months (or thereabouts) Tech, I'd hope it was serious :p

Can confirm I've now cleared VTEC completely! 43312 showed its face on my train up to Edinburgh this morning, cue a victory punch of the air at 5:55am

Currently on 380014 from Largs, SPT Daytripper Bash report coming soon!

This is my last scheduled bash until Germany on May 28th, though I'll still be taking to the rails (Scarborough on the 16th and a tourist trip to London on the 30th)

Congrats on VTEC! That's quite an achievement! I still need 10 milkfloats and 3 trams *plans to get to the north east ASAP*!

Blackfriars is an evil station to try and change platforms, same with the other stations in the core. Fixed formation 700s will be so much easier as you don't have to worry about what set is attached to the rear/front (if that makes sense)

Congrats on VTEC :)

You were a brave man relying on last trains!

Also that's some ridiculous mileage for just 1 day :)

Also also... 221104 is one of my last two VT221s required for sight :(

Ooh excellent, another trip report on the way! :D

Congratulations on clearing the VTEC fleet, quite an achievement! Jealous with needing quite a bit there still, like Fishquinn I want to get back to the North East!

Strathclyde- 07/04/16

Following a day of rest on Wednesday, it was time for another bash and this time I really wanted to make inroads on my Ayrshire and Inverclyde Line shacks, because I need quite a few! Excluding Paisley Gilmour Street, everything to Gourock/Wemyss Bay except Bishopton was needed, everything to Largs except Kilwinning was needed and I still needed Barassie and Prestwick Intl Airport to complete the stations to Ayr from Kilwinning. I found a 1st Advance fare for £15.50 on the way up, coming back in Standard for £10.25 so this was a reasonably priced day out!

Off at the station for 0545 and I spent some time hanging around before 5S01, the ECS move trundled in. What’s the first thing I see as the train approaches? That we’ve got winner 43312 leading dud 43208! VTEC now cleared as I grinned to myself, making a dash back down the platform the photograph my final captured VTEC HST, and into the warmth of Coach L. Service was mightily slow on this one! No staff popped out until after Morpeth, with toast being served before Alnmouth and breakfast shortly before Berwick. Nonetheless, it was most delicious and the tea was then topped up after Dunbar, so I had a muffin too  Arrival was spot on time at 0805, meaning I could catch the 0815 to Queen Street, worked by duds 170471/170406. The First compartment was busy but there was a form of service, so I had tea and shortbread on this leg, with attention being more on my surroundings after Bishopbriggs as I scooped the rare track linking us with Ashfield.

It was a most unusual experience travelling by DMU into Queen Street Low Level, but the queueing systems all worked most efficiently as we arrived in spot on time at 0928, with a gentle walk being made over to Central and £11.60 being handed over for a Daytripper. Off to Platform 14, and the 0948 to Largs was ready and waiting, being worked by winner 380016. It felt like I was bashing in luxury, plugging in my phone and connecting to the wifi for the short journey to shack 1, Johnstone. This was a bit of a faff, having all +2s and +3s, but thankfully, the connection was made easily onto winner 380017 back to Paisley Gilmour Street. Next up was winner 380113 to shack 3, Glengarnock and I had a carriage to myself for the entire journey which was most welcome! The next shack was however slightly more difficult. It was a +3, we were running 1 late and it was 30 minutes for the next service. Of course, I’m talking about Milliken Park, shack number 4 and it was down to winner 380022 to get me there. This shack is evil! It’s a long walk up onto the main road then a stagger back around with the station entrance being halfway down the road! In the end I practically jumped down the embankment, through the entrance and onto winner 380103 to shack 5, Lochwinnoch.

This was in quite a nice setting, and I took the chance to have a stroll around the RSPB Nature reserve due me having a +16 here. Very peaceful indeed as I returned to the sight of winner 380014 taking me to shack 6, Howwood (Renfrewshire). This was another decidedly evil shack to change at but in a much prettier setting, opening out to a country park type thing (technical  ) to the north. However, for me, it was time to join winner 380001 to shack 7, Dalry. This was the last one between Paisley and Kilwinning, and I had a linear move here onto the Ardrossan train, formed of dud 380018. I wasn’t entirely sure where to bail, but in the end I settled on shack 8, Ardrossan South Beach. This gave me 10 minutes before the service from Largs, so I went for a look around at the rather interesting blackish sandy beach before jumping on dud 380004 back to shack 9, Stevenston. Just a warning that this has a level crossing! However, the standard connection back over towards Largs seems to be a +6 so provided that there’s a right time arrival, there’ll be no real issue.

Fresh dud 380014 was in charge all the way through to shack 10, Largs, clearing the line for track. However of course I’d have to return sometime for Fairlie and West Kilbride! Speaking of which, the run between these two shacks and onwards to Largs was most picturesque, so if you’re into scenery then overall a run from Glasgow to Largs fits the bill. There was a 10 minute turnaround here before I decided to change lines and took the same train all the way back to Paisley Gilmour Street. Having just missed a fast Gourock train, I took my chances, fired up Google Maps and walked to shack 11, Paisley St James. It’s easy enough, and took me about 12-13 minutes to do at a leisurely pace, although it’s less than scenic, especially if you hate St Mirren FC  Up onto the platform, and surprise surprise the station was dead, with me being the only one boarding winner 380012 to shack 12, Cartsdyke. Another station that seemed to be a bit of a dump, but I only had a +2 here so by the time I ran like the clappers from the wrong end of the train over the bridge I barely had time to comprehend my surroundings before winner 380005 was carting me off to shack 13, Langbank.

Nice view from the top of the footbridge at Langbank as I crossed over and had a short wait for dud 380010 to shack 14, Greenock Central. Now things got a little easier as all services stopped at the shacks between Greenock and Gourock. All I had to do was wait 5 minutes for dud 314207 to turn up, giving a nice bit of noise for the short run to shack 15, Greenock West. The entertainment then continued with winner 314202 providing the traction to shack 16, Port Glasgow, which just left one more shack to get on the line for today (Bogston and Woodhall could wait). Winner 380020 took me along to shack 16, Fort Matilda, where dud 314207 then thrashed all the way back to Glasgow Central, being a fast service, for 1606. I then headed out and over to the local Co-Op for a reduced price Cheese and Onion slice, devouring it as I boarded dud 314211 to shack 17, Crosshill. Yes, it was time to get going at the Cathcart Circle lines again. However, on joining dud 314214 heading back towards Glasgow, I was already missing shacks as my +1 obviously wasn’t going to work at Pollokshields East, so I ended up bailing at Queen’s Park (Strathclyde) for dud 314207 to shack 18, Whitecraigs.

The rain was starting to fall quite heavily as I crossed platforms to change over onto winner 314201 to shack 19, Cathcart where all of a sudden it brightened up again! Thankfully we now had a roughly 12 minute frequency vice the off peak 30, so it wasn’t long until dud 314214 turned up again to take me to shack 20, Muirend. From here I could catch a busy 1N32, which had been fast from Glasgow to here, formed of winner 314213 trailing dud 314209 which I was meant to take to Patterton! However, the PA was so terrible that I misheard it, and when I looked up again we were running through endless fields on the 4 miles between Patterton and Neilston! Oops! Not too much was lost as I took the units back to shack 21, Patterton after a 9 minute turnaround. However, that shot the plan of getting 2 shacks in on the line via Maxwell Park. Instead, I settled on focusing on Pollokshields East. Winner 314216 soon filed in behind to take me to the all important shack 22, Pollokshields East, where with it getting on for 1830, I called it a day and joined dud 314214 back to Glasgow Central, for 1846.

I picked up two items of dinner from Boots for a total of £1 (vice £6.40  ) and walked to Queen Street, finding myself slightly early so I ended up joining the 1902 to Edinburgh which happily had winner 170455 leading dud 170472. I sat in 472, and it was a quiet, pleasant run via Springburn this time into Edinburgh for around 2009. All that was left now was a long fester at Waverley, so I ended up going for a walk (ooo naughty break of journey!!) before returning to Platform 2 for the 2100 to Leeds, this time formed of duds (obviously) 43277/43314. It was pretty quiet in Coach F, but despite this I was bizarrely wide awake, in complete contrast to last week’s use of this service where I was a sleepy wreck  We were even in 1 early at 2242, meaning I wasn’t home *too* late.

An excellent day, seeing everything on the Cathcart Lines cleared via Mount Florida as well as the two branches to Neilston and Newton, and my last proper bash for about 6/7 weeks, and my last proper bash in the UK scheduled for quite a while! Normal service will resume in July when the ALR happens  However, fear not, I shall still be taking to the rails. I’m going to London with the girlfriend soon, and that’s a 0603 start, 0739 into Leeds, 0840 to Kings Cross, back on the 1835 to Leeds, 2133 to York, 2206 to Newcastle and back for 2309  Oh yeah, and it’s a +7 at York. Next one is a 0001 arrival at Newcastle. So I’ll still be getting obligatory sleep deprivation :p

Congrats on a good day in the day tripper area, I shall bare the evil stations in mind when it comes for my planning as I need a few shacks in that area :)

Sounds like a great day out there! How many 380s do you need now? With all of those winners it can't be too many!

Well took me a dogs age to catch up with your postings but I got there in the end, all good reads Richard, definitely been busy on the rails mate, hope all goes well with the new girlfriend. I bet the conversation between you and the parents, was fun, geordie accent and Yorkshire accents collide.

Your certainly wiping the floor with these shacks and getting many a winner too. Very envious of the fife cats, especially 68017, need that for sight myself.

Great reads young Sir, good to see a fellow Geordie, keeping our great republics end up in the mileage charts too, im only about 7k behind you:lol:, so unless I nick Michael Portillo's InterRail pass and work lets me loose on the rails, I think its safe to say, your Tynesides only hope of getting anywhere near a top of the league.

Cheers Sir, thankfully I don't have the strongest accent so it wasn't too much of an issue

Indeed my mileage is quite high, probably give it a month and i'll be on 10k :p

An excellent time in SPT land, fair dos! Quite a clearout of shacks, which takes a surprising amount of time as you'll have no doubt seen yourself. Cartsdyke, I seem to recall being less than impressed with that one myself!

Good news on the 314 thrash, I'd have loved to be on that run!

Ouch to the long day on your forthcoming London trip, I won't envy you whatsoever on that one

Cheers Tech, you'll not be surprised to hear that I forked out another fiver and booked First Class on the homeward leg from Leeds to Newcastle

Aye it does take a while, probably another trip will sort out the remaining shacks that way on lines that i've started on on Ayrshire/Inverclyde. No idea where to start with Wemyss Bay however.

Wemyss Bay branch should be easy enough to do, on the assumption that you've already had Wemyss Bay station itself, there are 5 intermediate shacks between Wemyss Bay & Port Glasgow [which IIRC has a large Tesco 10 minute walk away], although going backwards and forward will have long festers, you could always have a wonder around the area.

[if you need Wemyss Bay itself, looking at Google Maps looks like Drumfrochar is walkable from Greenock West (0.6 miles)

I advise looking at my moves when I cleared out the Wemyss Bay line shack. Surprisingly easy during the evening peak! If I remember, I'll dig out the relevant bits on RM and link you to the moves.

Ah great, cheers! I could see a couple of extra services in the peaks so it looks similar to Neilston. Absolute slog during the day but a nice steady supply of trains in the evening!

I'm alive!

I've still been on the rails, and I have indeed scored a little along the way, but of course, relationship has been taking priority these past weeks (and months really!)

Indeed, that's how it's staying for the next couple of weeks (although on the 21st we're off to London again, so mileage in the bank as always welcome)

Then, with Em having both her friends coming back from University and having a dental nursing exam to slave over (it's a pesky one, at that!) there's a 4 week gap between us seeing each other, and that's where we have a brief burst of rail action!

Basically, there's the long time coming bash on DB which is starting to take shape. On the 28th, we fly down to Dusseldorf, and we're staying on the outskirts of Cologne for 4 nights, with me acting as tour guide (and German speaker, to an extent!) to the parents. It's no intensive bash, but the rail will be the primary form of transport. Day 1 looks to be a Schones-Wochenende Ticket (48EUR for the 3 of us!) which is basically an ALR for Germany that isn't valid on IC/ICE. That's astounding value! The plan is to travel Cologne-Koblenz and then use the West Rhine Railway down to Mainz, before paying a visit to Frankfurt. Return will then be via the East Rhine Railway back to Koblenz and subsequently Cologne :D

On other days it'll be a NRW Schoner-Tag ticket, 43EUR for us each day, this time covering a vast area in the North Rhine Westphalia, and it's valid on absolutely everything! Buses, Trams, Trains, the lot.

Back to Blighty and on June 4th i'm actually heading down to the Midlands for a bash and even staying there rather than running off onto a Cat down to Marylebone this time  Well, it's still gonna be a little quirkier. Basically, i'm on the first XC of the day down to Brum, getting in at 0930 and from there, i've got 7 hours of bashing. Not sure what yet, but the Cross City needs work, as do the shacks to Coventry...

The return! I booked myself on the 1651 Super Voyager Coventry-Euston then the 1911 GC from Kings Cross-York followed by the 2109 TPE to Newcastle... one heck of an adventure i'm looking forward to there, first proper run on Grand Central too!

And that's really it until the 14 day ALR in August/September which is looking to be 5+5 days bashing interspersed with a couple of days away with the girlfriend (Well it's always convenient when you've got the travel paid for yourself ) On my radar is *Berney Arms!*, The Aberdeen-Inverness Line, the Valleys, Cornish Branches, Riviera Sleeper, Southeastern Highspeed, Anglia Branches, and of course, the Heart of Wales!

Funnily enough Blindtraveller and I were talking about you on Sunday night, as we hadn't observed you on here for ages. Glad to hear things are going well with your girlfriend, it must be serious if you've been together this long and you're giving up 4 days of your ALR to be with her! I'm sure I speak for everyone here, it's not a bit of the trip report we need to hear about

The DB trip sounds amazing, I must say. Bargain too!

Glad you're still about and that all's good :)

Glad I come up in conversation and that people wondered where I was

And I'm not entirely giving it up so to speak, I had the idea of spending a day in London then catching the Night Riviera to Cornwall and she had the idea of perhaps spending a couple of days in Brighton, so I'll still be on the rails, just not intensively bashing :D

Ah fair game, I can think of better places to visit than Brighton though! Bognor Regis would be a better choice in my eyes :)

Well i've visited neither so either way i'm good to be honest, still highly likely to throw up winners and the like! Planned a couple of days for the ALR thus far and as you can see, they're fairly intense.

This one includes a sneaky shack scratch at Craven Arms and Ludlow... well aware of the tight connection at Cardiff, worst case scenario is i'm an hour late home really

0525 NEWCASTLE-YORK 0628
0645 YORK-MANCHESTER PICC 0805
0830 MANCHESTER PICC-LUDLOW 1005
1018 LUDLOW-CRAVEN ARMS 1025
1037 CRAVEN ARMS-SWANSEA 1425
1455 SWANSEA-CARDIFF CENTRAL 1546
1555 CARDIFF CENTRAL-LONDON PADDINGTON 1809
1900 LONDON KINGS CROSS-NEWCASTLE 2149

Miss the 15:55, and the next HST will probably only be 30 or so minutes behind (16:25) which gives you a tight, but doable 28 minutes to get across to Kings Cross, doable if you don't have a 10 minute wait for a S7 service to decide to show up. Although you could probably make the 14:28 HST to Puddington (or to escape Swansea to get to Cardiff for a much needed break)
