I'd love to see the promotions carry on, although I've only Poppleton and Ulleskelf on the Leeds to York lines left. Then my attention turns to, most likely, the East Riding! Hull-Scarborough and Selby-Gilberdyke hold many required shacks. Although I suspect Wressle and Eastrington will take some planning!

I take it they are rather limited service shacks?

Reasonable to assume most of us need to have quite a clearout in East Yorkshire and that general area, I sure do!

I'm planning to do Ulleskelf in the next couple months when I'm in Leeds, I think the easiest way (without checking the timetable) will be on the Sheffield - York service, which calls there both directions (so a 30 minute fester). You could bail at Church Fenton and have a short wait for a Blackpool bound service towards Leeds.

East Yorkshire might take a few days with East Yorkshire Round Robins and my little bike to make a dent into.

Saltmarshe might involve catching one of those morning services, which have a +15 (or a +18). Better than the +2hours (or a +3 in the evening!)

Broomfleet at least has a +16 smack bang in the middle of the day...

Saltmarshe has a +10 in the evening (although it also has a +17 and a +15 in the morning)

Wressle and Eastrington have decent connections in the morning but sadly nothing later on, I see a +73 at Wressle! It looks like a 75 minute walk to Howden too, and Eastrington is 55 minutes walk from Gilberdyke, or 1hr 47 from Saltmarshe if the weather is nice and you feel like killing two birds with one stone

Indeed Kite, that is the easiest way, unless you fancy a walk to Church Fenton off a different service! I was tempted to try it yesterday, but all of the roads are unlit so it didn't seem particularly safe!

Quite a lot of planning needed I would imagine for some on that line

Wressle looks a bit evil, google is suggesting 3.8 miles to Howden, so around 20 minutes by bike (or 75 minutes walking).

Long live my:

Seville the Second- 20/02/16

So, in the final Spanish instalment, I bring you my trip to Seville, the second time! This time, I was keen to sample the high speed offering which was the 0915 from Malaga, requiring an earlier start from Benalmadena, and indeed, I was catching the 0734 to Malaga Centro Alameda as far as good ol’ Maria Zambrano with duds 464218/464718 getting me in there for bang on 0802, where I now had a while to try my luck on the Metro and get my final tram (I captured 3110 on the Thursday, on a brief trip to Malaga in order to buy my tickets for this trip!) which was 3070. I was most bemused to head for the Palacio de los Deportes service, open the door, only for it to open halfway and bang shut in my face before departing! Guess I was off upstairs then! Dud 3030 took me along to Portada Alta, my bizarrely unrecorded shack, so I was just being extra sure that it was done! Sadly, it was then dud 3120 taking me along to La Isla, where for the last time I’d be walking along at sunrise into the main Maria Zambrano station, having my bag checked, and heading onto a busy waiting area. This morning we had the 0840 AVE to Barcelona, the 0900 AVE to Madrid, and my train, the 0915 AVANT to Seville. It was here that I noted exactly why AVEs are so punctual, as the 0840 to Barcelona Sants left half the train behind with doors locking shut at 0837! It didn’t leave until 0840 but it was still a very bizarre choice to leave everyone behind, especially as they were queuing to have tickets stamped! The next train to Barcelona Sants? 0840. Monday.

Meanwhile I caught sight of my train, which was to be winner 104011, a 4 coach Pendolino type train (the bodysides are very similar) and in all honesty inside I was underwhelmed! I was reserved in seat 10B, an aisle seat in a bay of 4! Which had no tables! A more expensive train, yet it lacked tables! ‘Oh never mind, I’ll just plug my phone in…wait what?!’ It also lacked plugs, wifi, information screens. This was not something anyone should be forking out more for. Lack of a table on a high speed service is just plain pathetic! 3 others joined me in the bay, making it very cosy and when I noted that the carriage was practically empty, I went and sat at the back in a very spacious pair of seats. I’ll give it that, if you want speed, even more legroom and a soft, springy seat then catch the AVANT. Departure was punctual and we quickly joined the high speed line, only to plunge into tunnel most of the way to the first station, Antequera Santa-Ana, before reaching speeds of up to 160mph, absolutely hammering our way to the positively gigantic Cordoba Central, where the train filled (and I prepared to move as reservation screens simply don’t exist!) Bizarrely though, I was in the only pair of seats NOT occupied by somebody from Cordoba, and we proceeded to switch direction and blast our way non stop to Sevilla Santa Justa, for around 1103, an amazing 7 minutes early!

I now had plenty of time to buy a Zone 1 return on the Cercanias network, before jumping on winners 465203/465703 on the 1117 to Utrera, as far as shack 45, Virgen del Rocio. This was a nice move as winners 465233/465733 were directly behind on the fairly sporadic Line 5 service, which was terminating at the next station, shack 46, Jardines del Hercules. I was amazed to find that the entire 5 carriage train was deserted! Makes a change, as services operated by these Civia trains tend to be quite busy! I realised why we were so quiet. JDH serves future developments. I had 17 minutes until my train back to the city, so I left the station in order to cancel my outward portion of the ticket and put it straight back through to activate the return leg, before joining winners 465234/465734 back to San Bernardo. Now, time to complete the Metro network! Loading another day pass onto my smartcard, I tapped in and joined dud 107 all the way to the end of the line, which was shack 47, Olivar de Quintos. I was amazed at the sharpish turnaround here for a 7 minute service, which was basically, you arrive, the driver instantly jumps out, power walks to the other end, keys in, and closes the doors before leaving, all in around 2 minutes! The shack scratching could now begin as I was taken back down to shack 48, Montequinto. Winner 113 was up next to take me to the rather cavernous Europa, shack number 49, where it was then winner 103 to shack 50, Pablo de Olavide, another shack where photography was possible of the little trains.

On joining winner 121 to shack 51, Contequinto, I noted a sign on the platform detailing the byelaws of the railway in Spanish! Turns out photography, recording, eating and drinking are completely banned! Seemed unreasonable but nobody had prevented me taking shots, although it turns out that this network had some nasty tricks up its sleeve. Oblivious to this however, I was soon joining dud 106 to shack 52, La Plata. I was under the impression that I had about a +2 here to change platforms, but oh no! It was a dead zero connection, resulting in me diving across the bridge and somehow jumping onto winner 115 as the doors were closing. Shack 53 was the amusingly named ‘Amate’ which was the last one on this end of the line. Dud 103 would now take me all the way to the other end of the line, shack 54, Ciudad Expo. Same quick turnaround here and I was soon back at shack 55, Cavaleri. One more in the central section and I was done! However, I held that one back until later as I was tempted by a run on the City Loop Line before my train north on the suburban network. Winner 109 had me to San Bernardo in good time where I went to tap out and…nope! It was having none of it! ‘Exit prohibited’ said the gates! Excuse me?! Panicked, I ran off back onto the platforms, picking up dud 113 to the next station, Nervion, in the hope that the gates were just faulty. Why didn’t I ask for assistance? The gates are unstaffed and not ones you’d want to try to leap over, being made of glass!

I go to tap out and nope! Exit not allowed! Was I seriously trapped in the sodding network? I search out a metro staff member who rolls his eyes at me, sarcastically taps my pass on the machine in the hope that I was out of credit, instead finding that it said ‘Day- All zones’. So that’d be the end of it, right? I indeed had a valid ticket? Nope, the guy starts probing me for answers. ‘You were on the Metro for a very long time?’ ‘About an hour and thirty, sir, yes’, I reply, not wanting to become the next poster on the disputes and prosecutions forum for failing the attitude test! ‘Not allowed. Maximum journey is one hour, and next time I fine you. 1000 Euros.’ Seething, I say to him ‘Yes, well if you’d just detail that in English then maybe I’d take a note of it. It’s a day ticket offering supposedly unlimited travel!’ He just rolled his eyes at me, and with that, he let me out. Slightly speechless, I walk out and attempt to get back on track by walking to San Bernardo, having had enough of what was clearly a metro system that hated tourists. The last time I checked, a day ticket was a day ticket, not a one that you had to tap in and out of every hour! Besides, a full line trip is about 42 minutes, max wait is 13 minutes, and it can take a minute or two to reach the platforms. All of a sudden there’s every chance that you’re going to get caught out if you manage anything other than a smooth, uneventful journey on longer trips! And the natural response of the gates is to trap you in a largely unmanned system?! That’s utterly insane!

I was now thoroughly ticked off and thirty minutes behind schedule, catching winners 465228/465728 on the loop line via Palacio des Congresos. This line is thirteen miles long, and has a remarkable lack of stations and places of interest. We called at Santa Justa before peeling off and calling at two stations that were relatively close together in the east of the city, in turn trundling along through a vast expanse of nothing, and calling at Virgen del Rocio, San Bernardo once more and into Santa Justa for 1522, 31 minutes after calling at San Bernardo the first time! I do get the feeling that the service would get far higher patronage (as for a half hourly 5 car service, it gets about two or three dozen people, imagine that on a 5 car train here, day in day out? Anyway, I was now back on track as there was a scheduled +3 connection onto my next service (yes, a +3 at a station the size of Manchester Piccadilly!) which was the 1525 to Cazalla Constantina This was a Line 3 service, meaning that I’d sampled all three lines, and this is an odd one. It gets 4 trains per day (yes on a suburban network) and it’s operated by Series 598 Mediadistancia trains, making it strangely luxurious with curtains at the windows and seats that recline. It even had a vending machine, and the electronic screens indeed acknowledged that it was a Cercanias service. Winner 598010 was working today and I was on as far as shack 56, La Rinconada, where I could make a linear move onto the more regular Line 1 train behind. This was a pretty decent station for observing some fast moves with the high speed line alongside, and indeed I caught a shot of an AVE and my dud 465234/465734 alongside, with the latter taking me to shack 57, El Canamo.

Next up, I took winners 465227/465727 all the way back through to San Bernardo. I was going to get that one final metro shack, no matter what. 30 minutes later, I was making my way down to the platforms and boarding winner 119 to my final shack on this Spanish adventure, shack number 58, Plaza de Cuba. A +3 here and I was on dud 106 back to Nervion. Job done. I tapped out without issue and enjoyed a sunny stroll back to Santa Justa, the clock now approaching 5pm and the temperature hitting 22 degrees. Very pleasant indeed. I picked a McDonald’s from the station, before boarding waiting duds 599083/599084 on a beautiful journey back through the slow countryside route to Malaga. This was definitely the way to travel to and from Seville. I picked up another bag of nuts from the vending machine as well as a can of coke to sustain me until I picked up dinner later on. We arrived into Malaga Maria Zambrano 11 late at 2010, meaning that I had a sprint on my hands with the last validation of my 10 journey pass in the gates on the Cercanias platforms, duds 464212/464712 were sighted arriving, with me securing a single facing bay for the final final run to Benalmadena. And that was me done at 2040. ‘TITULO AGOTADO’ was printed on the back of the tickets by the gate and my adventure was complete.

Shame about the stupid 1 hour rule but other than that incident it sounds like you had a nice day and a great time in Spain!

That's a weird rule on the Metro, I'd have been tamping if that had happened to me!

The AVANT sets sound well behind the times, but at least they were comfy by the sounds of it. Bet you were glad you weren't on that 0840 though!

I must admit to needing to go and dig out my European atlas to properly follow the mainline routes at least, but I have been tempted to go over myself. Not for the reason one of my friends thought I'd want to go over for mind!

Some serious mileage involved there, and your YTD stats are brilliant fair dos. No doubt you've spent a lot less than me on your bashing so far too, I need to tot it up actually!

Cheers Tech, nice chilled weekend ahead of me with a couple of shack scratches on the Highland Mainline (Kingussie, Newtonmore and Pitlochry if all falls into place) on the £10 VTEC deal and 65p ScotRail tickets, followed by another one next Saturday, followed by London the next where things will ramp up again!

I probably have spent a lot less, considering the cheapness of bashing in Spain and the deals i've had with my Railcard...

Jeez you've got some busy times ahead, not at all jealous...

When I have a proper amount of time on Sunday I'll tot my spendings up for a bit of comparison!

I did pay £21 to get there, rest coming from other sources of expense ;)

Highland Bash- 27/02/16

So, this was meant to be the cheap day out in Scotland, and I must say that, considering the distance covered, it was excellent value! Indeed, it was time for a Highland bash on 65p loophole tickets! The day started bright and early with me getting up at 0530 in order to be able to join the 0630 Newcastle to Edinburgh which had dud 91127 hauling. In all honesty, I was knackered! I fell asleep for the entire journey, being woken up by ‘We’re now approaching Edinburgh Waverley…’, so I hastily gathered my things and jumped off, finding that the 0833 to Inverness had winner 170418 working. Good start, at least! I found myself a table for the run up through Scotland, being joined by an American gent who, politely, threw his rucksack across the table and knocked my camera onto the floor! No damage, but I was a little peeved! Amusingly, on arrival at Kirkcaldy, he asked if we were at Inverness, subsequently commenting that he makes this journey every year which didn’t fill me with hope that he’d been visiting Inverness this entire time, perhaps spending the week in Markinch or Inverkeithing...

We powered our way out of Perth, and from here the scenery opened up, with the next stop soon being mine, shack 1, Blair Atholl. I had a +46 here so it was time to go for a walk, picking up some lunch from the local store and walking next to the River Garry, jumping down the embankment and walking along the pebbled shore (or whatever you call the side of a river  ) to where the River Tilt and Garry meet, admiring the snow topped mountains in the background. This was NOT conventional bashing, as you can tell! All too soon, I had to catch my next train, and I climbed back up onto the path and back to the station in order to catch the 1114 to Pitlochry, formed of dud 170406. First comment of the day on my tickets, from the guard who was slightly perplexed by them! I decided to stay honest and say that the website had kicked out some very cheap tickets, which she seemed happy enough with, only to walk off and fall over another passenger’s bag! To her credit, she was amazingly calm for someone had just smacked their face on a seat and grazed their knee because of some arrogant old woman throwing her bag in the centre of the aisle!

Anyway, I was off at shack 2, Pitlochry, where I had a +21 this time, so I just took a short stroll around what was a rather charming little town, before returning to the sight of winner 170450 which was to take me far deeper into the Highlands. It was a well loaded train, but I found a pair of free seats for the run through a completely snow covered landscape! It was certainly a beautiful sight as we proceeded north, with me getting off at Kingussie, shack number 3. Now, I had two choices. Risk a +7 at Aviemore and wait here for 40 minutes in order to join the next Inverness, or walk back to Newtonmore, a far harder shack that was a three mile walk away. I was quoted 68 minutes for the walk, and I had a +74, so I decided to risk the walk as it looked like it would be most picturesque, and the Inverness was already 3 late. With a quick left turn out of Kingussie I was soon on a cycle path (I’m sure Kite would appreciate this, as it was basically a flat straight for the most part!) surrounded by mountains and err geese  The railway running parallel one side, the road on the other. It was a positively serene stroll, with me making it to Newtonmore proper in about 45 minutes, picking up lunch, and still getting to the station, shack 4, Newtonmore with time to spare!

I was most surprised to be seeing the 158s departing 26 late for Inverness! Excellent call on my part as I would have just had to fester in Kingussie, one heck of a +65 in what seemed like a very blank town! However, the problems were only beginning as no train for me appeared! It was a +182 for the next one which missed all connections south beyond Drem so for the first time in my life I used a station help point, which was answered by a lovely gent who said that for some reason both trains were at Kingussie so they’d be moving shortly. Imagine my surprise when the same 158s, double duds 158718/158724 rolled up 25 late! Turns out that they were faulty and couldn’t make the gradients north of Kingussie so they were sent back. Then we were told that we were terminating at Perth and it’d be a 40 minute wait for the next Edinburgh train! Great! There went the Gorebridge plan, on came the unit scratching plan! We accumulated further delays and in the end I had to sprint my way onto dud 170470 working the 1537 to Glasgow, which was duly taken down to Stirling. I formulated a quick plan which posed a few chances to get some winners in, and with that I was joining winner 170394 to Camelon. A station that I’d never wanted to return to for as long as I lived following last October’s Camelon moves in the dark! However, it all paid off as winner 156492 soon filed in behind on the 1702 to Falkirk, where we terminated.

I guess I had to use the East Kilbride tickets somehow so I jumped on dud 170471 back to Camelon where winner 170473 took me forwards to Linlithgow. Another couple of linear moves saw me catch a busy dud 170417 to Haymarket in order to try and score one last unit. The next train due was the 1808 double 334 service, however winner 158714 arrived early instead! Not complaining there! I then found dud 91113 to be working my train home and it was surprisingly busy! In my line of sight was an empty coach L however, and I gave in to the temptation and bought a weekend first upgrade for the 90 minute journey home. The service was pretty lacklustre (we had a single catering team member doing everything) and consisted of one drink ONLY (hot OR cold drinks!) and a sandwich which was served with popcorn (I don’t know, the Tunnocks teacakes on the trolley must have been forbidden fruit!). The tea eventually arrived 40 minutes later, well after I’d eaten, so it was a bit lacking all in all but I was paying for the space and comfort.
Good little day, some awkward shacks done!

Total Mileage: 531mi 70ch
Total Winners: 6+4 shacks
Total cost: £34.85

I am now reconsidering also my option of another Highland bash as it turns out that Dunkeld and Aviemore are the only ones do-able (Dalwhinnie needs the 1922 arrival at Edinburgh and Carrbridge needs a later arrival) and it's one or the other! Dunkeld OR Aviemore! So, as Stow-Nairn is a permitted route via Croy, I'm doing an SPT Roundabout instead and mopping up some shacks in Glasgow...

Sounded like a good day making use of a loophole ticket in an otherwise expensive part of Scotland (i.e. no cheap rovers available only that Freedom of Scotland one).

Flat straight, happy days :)

My bike doesn't do hills that well, built for city centre acceleration rather than hill climbing, although it remains how well it copes come August when I'm in Newcastle for a few days on a North East 4 in 8 :)

Scotland was the cheapest possible, two seat sale singles to Edinburgh and a load of 65p singles.

Leeds was reasonably cheap in terms of ticketing (£22ish) it's everything else that comes with a date, and I was the one who paid less! ;)
You should have insisted that you pay 50% of the stuff when you were together!

Any more trips coming up soon?

The Scottish trip sounded like you had a good day out. Given the sparsity of service and shacks, you did well to bag several winners.

Your plans for the next few months look interesting and I for one will look forward to reading about your antics in due course.

That could so have turned into an epic farce in Scotland! Don't forget with your lusting it's 2016, it's acceptable for both parties to spend money on each other ;) Of course, it's also still not the gentlemanly thing to do!

Another excellent read of course, and having only skimmed those future plans it looks like it'll be a great time ahead this year! I still haven't planned much, nothing booked or organised yet beyond New York. I do have a £15 RTV to use up though, so I expect I'll be heading north again this month...

Indeed Tech, especially with the last train south stupidly being the 1900 to Doncaster (vice 2100 Mon-Fri and Sun) there was little margin for error!

That's far too early on a Saturday! 1900 on a Sunday would be more acceptable, but on one of the busiest days of the week? Ridiculous!

I had a better look at your upcoming trips, a DB bash over several days? Very nice indeed, I'll be more than jealous! Oh and I finally looked up where Malaga is (always thought it was an island!), thanks to your trip report I'm hoping to go this year. Or maybe in 2017 for some warm weather to break up the winter!

Your 14 day ALR I am definitely jealous of, I can't wait to see how you get on!

I'm glad I provided some inspiration, just a warning that you can get through the vast majority of it in a day, although I can see you venturing further afield (Madrid is perfectly do-able at 146EUR walk up return, cheaper fares do exist though!)

As for the ALR, aye it's been on my mind a while! Hoping to break it up a bit with a couple of Sleepers (Berths on the Night Riviera as Cornwall is so hard to get to otherwise) and it also sets me up well for harder moves down south like the Battersea Park Overground PSUL move and a 390 via Bescot into Wolves. Either happening in July or August!

I dunno, I might do the railways in Malaga then do what one of my norm mates thought I was going there for! ;)

Quite happy to PM you any general advice you may want for your ALR!

Aside from the Riviera I will only be at home (I'm in a pretty favourable position for getting to anywhere aside from Plymouth and further west, and Dingwall and further north, as well as west of Swansea/Aberystwyth in a day) but thanks for the offer!

Had a catch up with your thread :)

Spanish railways don't sound like my idea of fun, but the report was enjoyable... Not surprised to see that there's a suspiciously over-specced station and a smart card system with obscure, poorly signposted, rules/penalties in a country rife with corruption!

So on a different note.. The Leeds lass is your official other half now? Get in there ;)

I will PM you general bits and bobs soon young sir about the ALR, at the moment I'm totally focused on getting my last 3 shifts of this week done and then it's holiday time. Once I come back from New York I have a ton of trips to plan, but I will PM you and 47403 with stuff for both your relevant trips.

Of course, if you're planning to come down my way, I expect a hello! ;)

Of course Lord Tech! I shall be all over so no doubt I'll be in the Midlands at one point or another.

Advice much appreciated when you get the chance, and of course do be sure to enjoy NYC! I look forward to reading about it in due course.

Indeed Kris, the Spanish have a bizarre way of working. Hopefully the Germans will restore my faith in Continental operations! And indeed, she is my girlfriend, I clearly made a decent enough impression (not withstanding me dropping a pound on the floor of Leeds station and staggering over when trying to pick it up about 3 minutes in [emoji38])
